Rabbi KaplanPassover ispractically uponus, and as weprepare for ourseders, especiallythose who havelong seders thatlast well into thenight, it’s alwayswonderful to hearthe words, Bashanah Haba’ahB’yrushalayim- “Next year inJerusalem!”. It’s always wonderful tohear those words because it means theseder is finally over! But for 16 of uswho recently returned from a week inIsrael, those words have very specialmeaning. We only spent seven days in theHoly Land, but we experienced a lot inthat time. We began with a trip to theSchenider Chidlren’s Medical Centernear Tel Aviv. In the first picture we’restanding with the director of1Writes...2school. We’re hoping to initiate regulare-mails between their older studentsand our Hebrew school students. The third picture is of SharbiMattar, who is a cousin of Lisa andSarah Klee, and is the Christian Arabco-owner of the Maxim restaurant inHaifa which was attacked by a suicidebomber a few years ago. The Jewishand Arab owners rebuilt almostimmediately and have defied attemptsby extremists to keep them fromproving that coexistence is not onlypossible, but profitable as well. Lunchwas wonderful! The ancient lava rock that isprevalent in the Golan is wonderful forgrowing grapes, and our group enjoyedwine tasting at the Golan Winery. (5thpicture)5The sixth picture is at the Dead Seawhere the healing minerals in the mudfrom this lowest spot on earth broughtcomfort and relaxation to the group.63anesthesiology at the hospital, the onlychildren’s hospital in the Middle East, which treats Jewish and Arab childrenalike. In the surgical suites, which werenewly rededicated by our own Marvinand Isobel Slomowitz, a Palestinianboy’s organs were transplanted just afew weeks before our arrival. The boywas mistakenly shot by Israeli soldiersas he carried a toy rifle, and his fatheragreed to have his organs transplanted. His heart went to a twelve-year-oldArab girl, his liver to a seven-month-oldJewish boy, one kidney to a four-yearoldJewish girl and one to a five-yearoldArab boy. We handed out toys tothe children in the wards. The second picture shows JudyWeltman and me with first graders froman Israeli public school of mostlyEthiopian and Russian immigrants.Despite the hardships they face in theirhomes in their lower classneighborhood near Haifa, they thrive inPage 2After a boat ride on the Sea ofGalilee we visited an ancientsynagogue in the foothills of the GolanHeights where Bill Harrison, a regularat our daily Minyan, led our group insome special prayers. (4th picture)4The huge stones of the WesternWall (7th picture), with hundreds ofthousands of notes stuffed in betweenthem, is the backdrop for a very sincereMisheberach blessing given by a verydevoted and pious looking fellow, who, thank goodness, didn’t charge by theword!7continued on page 3

Cantor’s NotesPassover isupon us! Thiswonderfulfestival, lovedby most of us(with a touchof dreadbecause of thework andCantor Ahron Abrahamrestrictionsinvolved) commemorates our transitionfrom an enslaved people to a unifiednation under God’s law. We jointogether with family and friends at theseder, reminiscing not only about thehistory of our people, but about ourown family history as well. It is soimportant to share memories with eachother, to preserve a heritage that maynever be written down in a book, butis so valuable in understanding whowe are.Rabbi KaplancontinuedWrites...This is what you see when you exitthe brand new museum of theHolocaust at Yad Vashem in Jerusalemfromthe horrors of the death camps tothe wide open spaces of the Judeanhills of Jerusalem. (Picture 8)This year we lost a number of veryspecial members of our Temple Israelfamily. One of those was our spiritedritual director, Saul Troy. Saul was afascinating human being, full of life andenergy, and a wealth of memoriesabout this community. Saul seemed toknow everybody, and had interestingstories to share. Phyllis Greenwald andIda Miller had the foresight severalyears ago to suggest we sit down withSaul and videotape him while hereminisced. Matt Brown filmed, weasked questions, and Saul talked. Forthose of you who miss Saul and hisstories, I have a treat for you. I’vemade DVD copies of the tape, whichI’d be happy to make available to you.Even if you didn’t know Saul well, thisDVD is an opportunity for you to learnmore about the history of our TempleIsrael family, and the people who madeChange of Website Addresshigh school. Scott Nachlis seems to fitright in with his Israeli counterparts.this congregation what it was and is.Saul lived a long and productive life, and a big part of his life was ourTemple and the Jewish community ofWyoming Valley. I know he would bepleased that future generations willlearn and preserve his stories, and wishall of us a hearty “yashar koach!” formaking the effort.PASSOVER TUNES AVAILABLE ONTHE TEMPLE WEBSITE!I have posted a selection of“Hagaddah Highlights” on the website(templewb.org).Use them to warm up for your ownfamily seder! If you have any questionsor need help in preparing to lead aseder, I would be more than happy toassist you. Call the office and we’ll setup a time.Temple Israel’s web address has been changed. The new address is www.templewb.org.E-mail can be sent to office@templewb.org; rabbi@templewb.org, etc. Please make a note of this change in your e-mail address book.9fruits, and amazing pastries and pitasmade this trip far better than a ride toPrice Chopper or the mall.108(Picture 9) Instead of the traditionaltree planting with the Jewish NationalFund, we went to the city of BetShemesh, not too far from Jerusalem, toplant trees on the grounds of a publicThe final picture (10) shows ourtour guide Judy Goldman leading MimiRoss, Edie Seeherman, and MindyThalenfeld through the alleys of theopen air marketplace in Jerusalemcalled Machaneh Yehuda. And hopefully, instead of justsaying “Next year in Jerusalem” at theend of your seder, we’ll make sure itcomes true!Wishing you a Zissen Pesach!Rabbi KaplanPage 3

Debbiepresented an interesting, rather unusual study of Vashti ofPurim fame. According to a contemporary book, “SarahLaughed” by Vanessa Ochs, on women of the Bible, Vashtiwas a woman of great courage who dared to refuse herking’s order to appear before him. Vashti would seem tobe an excellent role model for today’s independent womenAs the ladies gathered around Debbbie’s dining roomtable for coffee and delicious pastries, there was a healthyexchange of ideas for future programs. Won’t you thinkabout joining the group when the next series isannounced? And thank you, Debbie, for your research onVashti and your kind hospitality.SAVE THE DATE: The Sisterhood Closing Meeting will beheld on Wednesday, May 17, 2006.Page 6

From Our President. . .Shabbatservices anddaily minyans atTemple Israeloffer a variety ofways toimmerseyourself inJewish musicJane B. Feinstein and learning, toexperience themeaning of our ancient texts and thebeauty of our ancestors’ poetry, and torenew yourself spiritually.Shabbat Services: Some peopleprefer traditional Shabbat davening, while others prefer the more informalcreative musical services. Wecurrently offer a combination oftraditional Shabbat services, creativemusical Shabbat morning services, musical Friday evening services, and anoccasional havdallah service, so thatthere is something to which most of ourmembers can connect spiritually. Wecelebrate themed Shabbats such as LawDay Shabbat, Veterans’ Day Shabbatand Sisterhood Shabbat; we celebratefamily life cycle events, such as bar orbat mitzvahs, wedding anniversaries, and baby-namings; we celebratepersonal milestones, such as birthdaysor bar mitzvah anniversaries; and weinvolve our religious school studentsand even entire classes in conductingand leading parts of our services. Weare working on initiating a periodicFriday evening Tot Shabbat for our veryyoungest members and their parents. As always, we welcome yoursuggestions for additional ways toenhance the meaning and enjoyment ofShabbat for our members.Minyans: At Temple Israel, wemake every effort to conduct a dailyminyan. Our regular morningminyans, held on Mondays, Thursdaysand Sundays, are very traditional, whileour evening minyans, held daily, are —traditionalists, forgive me — somewhatmore “user-friendly.” While we havestrengthened the Monday and Thursdaymorning minyans sufficiently that mostof the time we are able to make aminyan, we are not making it by much.If one or two people are ill or out oftown, we may find ourselves without aminyan. Afternoon and weekendminyans are more regularly a struggle. It is very frustrating for those who comefor minyan, especially those who wantto say kaddish, to find upon arrival thatthere is no minyan. If you want toearn lots of spiritual mitzvah points, come to minyan once a week or acouple times a month. Help to make aminyan for someone saying kaddish. You would be doing a great service tothose in mourning and those observingyahrzeit. If you are inexperienced orlack confidence in your minyan skills, know that you are not alone. Ourclergy and our more experiencedminyan “regulars” will be glad to helpyou. (To sign-up for a regularcommitment, see the TNG-2 form at thebottom of this page.) If you need aminyan, call a couple friends or familymembers and bring them to minyanwith you. Or call Cantor Abraham afew days in advance, and he willensure that there is a minyan. At we approach Passover, we notonly clean the chometz out of ourhomes, but we also take theopportunity to clean the chometz out ofour lives. If you haven’t attended aservice or a minyan recently, Iencourage you to do so. I’m certainthat one of our many offerings willprovide you with the spiritual renewalthat comes with clearing the chometzfrom our lives. Best wishes for a happyPassover!Janepresident@templewb.orgThe Next Generation 2: Our Spiritual FutureThanks to the generosity of our congregation, Temple Israel is diligently working to address our financial needs to helpsustain us for years to come. Now we must strengthen our spiritual foundation through increased participation. We need you to help make our Templerituals and celebrations more meaningful for yourself and others by sharing the experience with a larger congregation. We are asking every member to make a commitment to one of the following categories of attendance. Each year, we willrecognize those who fulfill this commitment with a special gift, a service of recognition, inclusion in Temple publications andmany mitzvah points.
