Wirbelstrom-Prüfgeräte und -Systeme • Eddy Current Instruments and Systems CONTROL 2012 CONTROL is being held again in Stuttgart from May 8th to the 11th. This trade fair has been around for 26 years already and we have been presenting our test devices there since that time. The trade fair began in Sindelfingen with 97 presenters that year when the subject of quality assurance was not yet really an issue. That has permanently changed. Today we are one of over 800 exhibitors at the trade fair and over 24,000 trade visitors from 88 countries prove the high value of quality assurance and this event. The rapid growth of our business enables us to present a small highlight at CONTROL nearly every year. This year we presented the compact EC15 rotor. Designed for non-contact crack detection on wires, this rotor‘s small dimensions and low weight allow it to be used in the interesting field of handling machines, e.g. for the testing of cylindrical parts (see the reports on pages 5 and 6). There was a great amount of interest so we were able to take some of the inquiries regarding this topic back home with us. Just like every year, this year many visitors once again took advantage of the opportunity to discuss their testing tasks with us, presented us with their smaller and larger task assignments, and were very often able to leave the booth with a verifiable response regarding their feasibility. Once or twice we heard visitors say, „This already made the visit to the trade fair worthwhile for us!“ That means that this year‘s appearance at CONTROL can once again be considered a success. Throughput rate:
10 parts/second, maximum conveyor
speed 100 mm/s, optionally faster.
Spectrum of parts:
Standard 1.5 mm < Ø < 5 mm, 5 < l < 30 mm,
optionally longer and up to Ø 10 mm
Typical defect specification:
Longitudinal cracks 0.05 mm deep x 0.05 mm wide x
3.0 mm long
The parts are fed in the line, e.g. using a vibratory feeder.
The line of parts is clamped between drive wheels
and brake wheels and thereby precisely and evenly fed
through the rotating head.
The overlaying of the rotational movement of the
probes and the progressive advance of the line of
parts monitored by encoders create a screw-shaped
test track on the test pieces. This allows their lateral
surfaces to be scanned for surface defects without gaps
or contact. After the brake rolls, the test pieces separate
from the line and fall individually into the subsequent
sorting switch which sorts to BAD (defective) in its
home position and is monitored in both its GOOD
(non-defective) as well as BAD position. The switch will
only be actively switched to the GOOD position if there
is a positive evaluation of all of the monitored parameters
and the test result is OK.
The good parts are counted and fed into a monitored
container as bulk goods. When 90% of the adjustable
target number of pieces is reached, the operator receives
an advance warning on the panel and signal light.
The systems stops when the target number of pieces
is reached. The system can also be equipped with an
optional container changer.Even at full testing speed,
defective (BAD) parts will be fed individually into a
monitored container as bulk goods. The number of
defective parts is recorded and an advance warning is
given when 90% of the preset target number of pieces
is reached in this case as well.It is possible to switch the
containers without stopping the system. The system will
Eddy Current System for sorting
stop if one or more of the containers are missing.
It is typically possible to modify the system to other
diameters in less than 15 minutes. The tools and interchangeable
parts are clearly organized and stored
in the integrated drawer cabinet. All of the system‘s
movements and functions are monitored and can be
controlled using the color panel. Part types and their
specific parameters can be saved in the control system
and selected on the panel for fast part-type adjustment.
Error messages are displayed on the panel in clear text
along with measures for resolving them.
The system is designed for unmanned operation. The
constructive measures and the careful selection of the
components used minimized the amount of servicing
required while simultaneously providing the maximum
service life.
Booth of the TUBE & WIRE 2012
TUBE & WIRE
Rohmann GmbH
The TUBE & WIRE trade fairs will be held in Düsseldorf from March 26th to the 30th, 2012. Over 1,300 exhibitors presented their
products at the WIRE trade fair alone. This year we will be presenting our products at the WIRE trade fair in Hall 16, putting us in
the direct vicinity of the FASTENER and SPRING product groups within the WIRE trade fair. This is just the right place for the first
presentation of the new EC15 rotor and the new sorting system. The TwinSort and NovoSort sorting separators (see pages 2 - 4 of
the report) received a great deal of attention. Our presentation of NovoSort, a 9-part separator, in action was just as successful as
our presentation of the EC15 and EC30 rotor systems in combination with encircling coils. The test devices we were able to present
included our ELOTEST IS500 and ELOTEST PL500 inline device family.
With a few interruptions we have been an exhibitor at the TUBE & WIRE trade fairs again and again. This year was the best so far,
however. A great amount of interest could be felt from visitors as well as other exhibitors. Many of them are already customers of
ours and more than a few people became interested potential customers at our booth.
All in all we can only say that WIRE 2012 was once again a very successful trade fair!
Software
Rohmann GmbH
Cutting costs through the most advanced multiplex technology
Have you ever watched a round of simultaneous chess? Then
you have experienced a visible example of multiplex technology.
One individual player plays against a series of opponents
at the same time. The player does this by switching to the next
opponent after each move. Naturally the chess master must
be an excellent player in order to be able to not only quickly
decide the next move but also to keep all of the simultaneous
games in mind and to know what their current status is.
That is precisely how multiplexing works in the modern eddy
current test devices in the V5 series such as the ELOTEST
PL500 and ELOTEST IS500. The devices can switch from one
set of parameters to the next very quickly (in 4 microseconds)
and can remember up to 32 (ELOTEST PL500) or 8 (ELOTEST
IS500) sets of parameters at the same time. Together with a
probe multiplexer, they can also switch between the test probe
or coil. The result is that they can operate multiple probes
with just one test channel in order to really save money. An
excellent testing speed can still be achieved in many testing
situations despite this fact because the digital test devices of
this family are based on the most advanced FPGA technology
and can therefore perform multiplex operations as quickly as
physically possible.
Optimally adapted to the test problem, the devices can be
configured in various multiplex operation types. We would like
to take this opportunity to briefly present the most important
ones to you:
Parameter multiplex
Normally the test devices in the V5 series switch between
entire sets of parameters in the multiplex. A test piece can
therefore be inspected using multiple test frequencies in the
frequency multiplex, for example. This technology is standard
for use with screening inspection (material mix, joints, etc.)
with up to 8 frequencies. The devices can also be equipped
with a sorting channel module for screening inspection that
provides additional important automated functions in order to
be able to set up such an inspection quickly and securely. We
have given this type of operation, commonly known as frequency
multiplex, the name „parameter multiplex“ because the
fast FPGA technology allows it to switch not only between test
frequencies but nearly the entire set of parameters. Testing can
also be carried out using different filter settings, for example.
Probe multiplex
In addition to the parameter multiplex, switching between the
test probe or coil is also possible with the aid of a probe multiplexer.
The probe multiplexer can even be already installed
in the channel module for up to two probes. Those who want
to multiplex more than two probes will require additional
multiplexer hardware that is available in different models. The
parameter multiplex is always running along with it so that
each probe receives its own complete set of parameters. The
probes can therefore be operated using different frequencies,
filter settings, or amplifications without a problem. Any phase
or sensitivity differences between the probes that may exist
can also be compensated in this manner.
Both the parameter multiplex as well as the probe multiplex
can be used in two different types of operation:
Fast multiplex operation
This type of operation really goes at it like a round of simultaneous
chess. After each data point is recorded, the operation
switches to the next set of parameters and the next probe or
coil. This enables an optimal testing speed to be achieved
and all of the signals are recorded „practically simultaneously“.
The recording rate of the channel per multiplex channel is
naturally reduced by this so that testing cannot be carried out
at the full testing speed of the channel. This type of operation
is suited for tasks where a high amount of track coverage is
required but the testing speed is not too high. The speed at
which testing can be carried out primarily depends upon the
number of probes or sets of parameters and the test frequencies
being used.
Slow multiplex operation
Now imagine if the chess grandmaster would not switch to
the next chessboard after each move but rather would spend
a certain number of moves or a specified amount of time
against each opponent. That is how the „slow multiplex“ type
of operation functions. The multiplex rate decreases, but the
full recording rate and bandwidth is available while the channel
is active. This type of operation is used if multiple quickly
rotating pieces are to be tested in rapid succession in multiple
stations, for example.
All of these types of operation can be combined in numerous
ways. One test channel can test the lateral surfaces of a
tool using multiple probes in fast multiplex while a second
channel tests one side then the other side in long multiplex,
for example. This enables optimal cycle times to be achieved
at reasonable costs.
Ask our experts to advise you on whether the innovative
multiplex technology can be used for your testing problem
as well. Then you will quickly be able to call „checkmate“ on
your testing costs.
