How can itbest get off to an intriguing andinvolving start? Justin Richardswill focus on how to hook thereader right from the beginning,using examples from hisown novels – including thedeliciously thrilling TheParliament of Blood. He will alsodiscuss his role as CreativeConsultant on the BBC’s rangeof exciting Doctor Who books.BIOGRAPHYJustin Richards has written extensively for children of every age.As well as his own novels, Justin works on the BBC’s Doctor Who booksand collaborates with Jack Higgins to write thrillers for older children.His new novel, The Parliament of Blood – a follow-up to the acclaimed TheDeath Collector – will be available for the first time at the Book Festival.TIPS FOR TEACHERS• How do you decide whether a book is going to be worth reading? From the cover? Or the blurb(promotional description)? The way it starts? Ask students to write the blurb for a book whicheveryone has read. Whose is the best and why?• How do writers engage and keep our attention? Which books do this best? Write the first sentenceof a story, make it compelling and intriguing. Take a vote. How many students want to know whathappens next?
