Blue Knights prepare for 1989 football season
With the opening game of the 1989
football season three weeks off. SHS
Blue Knights Head Coach Jude KeLly is
staying close to the thread which runs
through his training program - take it
one step at a time, and "take care of
the little things, the wins and losses
will take care of themselves."
This will be Kelly's second year at
the helm of the high school's football
teams, yet his first season to fully
incorporate his own program. Some
SHS fans are looking for a transition
from the Blue Knights' 4-6 season last
year Predictions for the coming season
are premature, but one thing is certain
- there will be change.
Kelly described his football program
as rungs on a ladder the players take
one at a time and it transcends the
practice field of the high school,
It starts with teaching fundamentals
in the flag and midget football
leagues. It continues to a sub-program
with [:flayeYs from the junior high and
Offensive llne
summer football clinics. Once in high
school, training begins in the off-season
with weights and conditioning to
prepare for spring practice. Fall practice
began in earnest Monday with field
drills, classroom sessions and more
conditioning spLit between weights and
running.
Emphasis under the new program
is slightly "diffused" from the varsity
squad, said Kelly. Practice games fielded
by sophomores from the Junior varsity
team give younger players a taste
of the gridiron and learn what skills
need sharpening in the months ahead
This attention to the younger members
on the bench. Kelly explains is the
solution to wild talent swings from year
to year and leaves the team less vulnerable
to graduating the I I starters
"We can graduate a large number of
seniors every year," he said. under the
program and not be left at a loss of talent.
Last year 16 seniors were on the
tealn.
"Diffusing emphasis" to the younger
players doesn't translate into forgetting
the seniors. Kelly stressed Instead. the
seniors will play a new role in the
dynamics of the team. The new emphasis
is on senior leadership among the
underclassmen. Speaking of the senior
players Kelly said: "This is your year
We're counting on you guys to provide
leadership to younger players "
KeLly also recognizes the dLtes paid
by the upperclassmen and said it
works into the "try-to-get-the-best-I lplayers-on-the-field"
base philosophy
behind his coaching decisions. If the
choice comes down to a younger or
older player of equal ability. Kelly said
he will pick the senior. "Other coaches
do the reverse because the younger
plaver will be around for a while."
On the field,the one-step-at-a-tlme
approach favors a pragmatic ground
assault, scoring drives focused on ball
control and first downs This year's
first-string quarterback Scott Otis can
deliver ground yardage, but also has a
Practice run
passing arm, said Kelly, and a receiver
in split end Steve Matyczyk Both men
are Juniors.
In the weeks ahead Kelly and his
staff Will be working on polishing the
fundamentals of their game and "doing
more team things " Personnel and
strategy have been set since spring
practice If pressed to pick I l starters
this week, Kelly said he and the assistant
coaches could do it in five min-
