As in 2011, the nursingand medicine professions contributed to over half of the total EFTSL in 2012, 36 per cent and 15 per cent respectively,or 56,770 EFTSL in total.The recorded change in EFTSL between 2011 and 2012 varied considerably by profession (Figure 1), and ranged froma 33 per cent increase for the paramedicine profession, to a 18 per cent decrease for the orthoptics profession. Theapparent growth in sonography is an artifact of its disaggregation from radiation science. Further explanation for thechange for each profession is provided in the relevant profession’s chapter. In general, the increases or decreases aredue to a combination of factors. For example, increases could be due to the introduction of courses in the 2012 survey,whether through the inclusion of new courses or in a small number of cases, providers supplying data for the first time.A decline in EFTSL in this period is likely due to factors such as the exclusion of courses in 2012 – that they were not runin 2012, no longer offered by the HEP, or no longer a professional–entry course.When compared to the average growth rate of eight per cent across all professions, the increases in EFTSL forphysiotherapy, medical laboratory science, nursing, psychology, audiology and occupational therapy between 2011and 2012 are comparable. Paramedicine, exercise physiology, orthotics and prosthetics, speech pathology, osteopathy,optometry, social work, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker and dentistry experienced higher growththan the average, while podiatry, midwifery, chiropractic, dietetics, and sonography/radiation science showed lowergrowth. Medicine, orthoptics, oral health and pharmacy did not grow between 2011 and 2012.12HWA | Clinical Training 2012
