An x-ray examination revealed that the Spoonbill had in-fact swallowed a fish hook which wassuccessfully removed during a 3-hour surgical procedure by our veterinary team. After 7 weeks care,the bird was returned to Mai Po Marshes Nature Reserve (on the 28 th February) and upon releasequickly rejoined a flock of roosting Spoonbill.This happy event drew significant attention from local media with 10 networks covering the story.(Please refer to the press release on page 3.)With the help of coloured identification rings fitted onto its legs, the Spoonbill was re-sighted nearthe Hong Kong Wetland Park in mid-March by local ornithologists, and, again on 8 th April, 2008 atMai Po by WWF staff.(Updated: April 2008)© 2008 Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園

WWF and KFBG Release a Recovered Black-faced Spoonbill back to NaturePress Release 28 th February, 2008After seven weeks of special care and treatment by Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG)and WWF, a Black-faced Spoonbill, recovered from injuries caused by an ingested fish hook andfishing line, is ready to go back to the wild and join its flock today at the Mai Po Nature Reserve.“This is the fourth known Black-faced Spoonbill that has been injured by fish hook and lines inHong Kong and we are very glad it has survived and recovered well from its injuries. The first twoSpoonbills died as a result of hook ingestion, the third suffered severe injury to the left wing andrequired wing amputation,” said Bena Smith, Mai Po Reserve Officer of WWF Hong Kong.WWF staff discovered the weak and undernourished Spoonbill inside a fish pond at the Mai PoNature Reserve on 10 th January, 2008. It was entangled in fishing line suffering slight injury to theright wing and had swallowed a fish hook. It was then taken to the Wild Animal Rescue Centre ofKFBG for treatment.“Our veterinarian conducted a three-hour operation to remove the fish hook from the bird’sstomach. Over the last seven weeks the KFBG rehabilitation team have cared for the bird and fed it agourmet diet of fish. Its weight subsequently increased from 1.1Kg after capture to a healthy 1.7Kg,”said Ms Amanda Crow, Conservation Officer and Section Head of Raptor & Bird RehabilitationSection of KFBG.It is common practice for fish farmers set lines and hooks around their fish ponds to protecttheir fish yield from fish-eating birds. As Black-faced Spoonbills and other wild birds are protected byHong Kong law, these practices are illegal. WWF and KFBG hope that fish farmers will amend theiractivities and seek more humane deterrent practices that will help protect their fish stocks, whilst notendangering the wild bird populations.“With permission from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), theHong Kong Bird Ringing Group has fitted coloured identity leg tags to the Black-faced Spoonbill inthe hope that bird observers in East Asia might re-sight the bird as it migrates through the flyway inthe coming years,” Ms Crow explained.KFBG receives 1-2 birds each year suffering from fish hook and line related injuries which aremainly waterbird species. In December 2007, a different Black-faced Spoonbill entangled in fishingline was photographed by birdwatchers in Deep Bay. The fate of that bird is unknown, but as it hasnot been seen since it is assumed to be dead.Black-faced Spoonbills are a globally endangered migratory species. The world population isaround 1,700 individuals of which about one-fifth spend their winter at Mai Po – making it one of thekey stopover sites for Spoonbills in the East Asian Australasian Flyway. WWF has since the mid-1980s dedicated considerable effort to protect these and other important bird species at Mai Po toensure their long-term survival with coordinated veterinary support from KFBG.If a member of the public finds illegal fish lines or traps across fish ponds they should report theincident to AFCD and if verified, the Government department will remove the structures and mayprosecute the involved parties.~ END ~

世 界 自 然 基 金 會 及 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 讓 康 復 黑 臉 琵 鷺 回 歸 自 然新 聞 稿二 ○○ 八 年 二 月 廿 八 日一 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 早 前 因 誤 吞 魚 鉤 及 魚 線 而 受 傷 , 經 由 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 七 周 的 治 療 及 悉 心 照 料 後 , 受傷 黑 臉 琵 鷺 現 已 完 全 康 復 並 正 準 備 於 米 埔 自 然 保 護 區 放 歸 自 然 從 返 鳥 群 。世 界 自 然 基 金 會 自 然 保 護 主 任 Bena Smith 聲 稱 :「 這 是 在 本 港 發 現 中 由 於 魚 鉤 及 魚 線 受 傷 的 第 四 隻 黑臉 琵 鷺 , 我 們 非 常 高 興 牠 仍 能 活 著 並 從 傷 患 中 康 復 過 來 。 首 兩 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 因 誤 吞 魚 鉤 已 死 , 而 第 三 隻傷 勢 嚴 重 並 已 切 除 左 翅 。」本 年 1 月 10 日 , 世 界 自 然 基 金 會 職 員 於 米 埔 自 然 保 護 區 內 一 個 魚 池 中 發 現 一 隻 身 體 虛 弱 及 營 養 不 足 的黑 臉 琵 鷺 , 牠 被 魚 線 所 纏 、 輕 傷 、 並 已 吞 下 魚 鉤 , 受 傷 黑 臉 琵 鷺 期 後 送 交 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 野 生 動物 拯 救 中 心 接 受 治 療 。嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 然 保 育 主 任 及 猛 禽 及 禽 鳥 復 康 部 門 主 任 Amanda Crow 表 示 :「 本 園 獸 醫 替 傷 鳥 進行 了 三 小 時 手 術 後 , 從 胃 部 取 出 魚 鉤 , 在 過 去 七 星 期 的 悉 心 照 料 下 , 職 員 為 傷 鳥 餵 飼 合 適 食 糧 及 魚片 , 其 體 重 由 進 園 時 的 1.1 公 斤 逐 漸 增 加 至 健 康 水 平 達 1.7 公 斤 。」對 於 漁 農 來 說 , 在 四 周 架 起 魚 鉤 及 魚 線 以 防 止 捕 魚 的 鳥 隻 進 入 魚 池 範 圍 是 一 種 普 遍 的 做 法 。 可 是 , 由於 黑 臉 琵 鷺 及 其 他 野 鳥 乃 受 香 港 法 例 保 護 , 此 漁 農 行 為 均 屬 違 法 。 世 界 自 然 基 金 會 與 及 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨植 物 園 促 請 漁 農 改 善 及 使 用 較 人 道 的 方 式 保 護 魚 獲 , 以 免 危 害 野 生 雀 鳥 及 影 響 其 族 群 數 目 。Amanda 解 釋 :「 得 到 漁 農 自 然 護 理 署 的 批 准 , 香 港 鳥 類 環 誌 協 會 已 替 康 復 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 戴 上 編 號 腳 環 ,期 望 東 亞 地 區 的 觀 鳥 人 士 能 於 未 來 數 年 重 見 其 遷 徙 路 線 。嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 每 年 平 均 接 獲 因 魚 鉤 及 魚 線 受 傷 的 水 鳥 一 至 兩 隻 。2007 年 12 月 , 一 名 觀 鳥 者 於后 海 灣 拍 攝 到 一 隻 黑 臉 琵 鷺 被 魚 線 所 纏 的 照 片 , 由 於 之 後 未 見 其 蹤 影 , 我 們 推 測 傷 鳥 可 能 已 經 死 亡 。黑 臉 琵 鷺 是 全 球 瀕 危 物 種 之 一 , 約 有 1700 隻 , 當 中 五 分 之 一 會 在 米 埔 自 然 保 護 區 內 過 冬 , 成 為 黑 臉 琵鷺 在 東 亞 澳 大 拉 西 亞 的 遷 徙 路 徑 上 一 主 要 中 途 停 站 。 得 到 嘉 道 理 農 場 暨 植 物 園 獸 醫 院 的 支 持 , 世 界 自然 基 金 會 從 八 十 年 代 中 期 開 始 致 力 保 護 米 埔 自 然 保 護 區 內 的 黑 臉 琵 鷺 及 其 他 重 要 雀 鳥 品 種 , 務 求 確 保他 們 的 長 遠 存 活 率 。公 眾 人 士 如 在 魚 池 四 周 發 現 非 法 魚 線 及 捕 捉 器 , 應 立 即 向 漁 農 自 然 護 理 署 舉 報 , 事 件 一 經 確 定 屬 實 ,政 府 部 門 將 會 移 除 設 施 並 可 能 向 有 關 人 士 提 出 起 訴 。~ 完 ~
