Creative Writing
Group Begins in
Alyth
Mr Jim Adam is organising a
writing group, as published in
the “Blairie”, which starts in
the Community Wing on St
Andrews Street on Thursday
9 th September at 10.30
a.m. Anyone and everyone is
welcome to come along. If
you haven’t tried putting pen
to paper or typing up a story
before, help will be available.
If you already have a story to
share the group we will be
delighted to read it or to hear
it being read.
And the Voice would love to
publish it.
Here is a biographical piece
by Jim -
I am not a military person. I wasn’t sure whether to
accept Jim Husband’s invitation to join the British
Legion’s Coach to Mc Diarmid Park in Perth.
Massed military bands were to “Beat the Retreat”
and there would be a flag ceremony commemorating
the sixtieth anniversary of the D - Day landings
in Normandy.
Blood – costly landings which heralded the beginning
of the end of the Second World War.
Especially during the silences, my mind went back
to 1943 to being called up to serve in the Royal
Navy. Three of us from St Mary Street and one from
The Crescent in Dundee went down, along with
many others to the Marryat Hall to be signed up for
the forces.
Although we four boys, about to become young
men, had been at Logie Central School together and
in the same class, our lives had gone different ways
in wartime Dundee. We had met up again in the
Joy’s Recipe for
Girdle Scones
Ingredients-
16 ozs S. R. Flour
Scant level T. spoon salt
2 slightly rounded t. spoon sugar
1 oz butter or marg
Just over/under ½ pint milk
Put on pan or gridle, electric 2 (electric frying pan 4)
Method
Sift dry ingredients into bowl
Rub in marg/butter with fingertips
Give a good stir with a knife.
Add milk to centre and keep on ‘stirring’ with the knife
The dough just has to be firm enough to handle and no more.
Cover a chopping board with an opened up flour bag, flour well.
Turn out half the mixture and flour lightly on top.
Use hands to make a round shape and then gently pat with the back of
the hand until you have four scones that will fit on your girdle easily.
Don’t make it too thin.
Cut with knife if you lift a wee drop flour from round the sides the
dough will not stick to the knife.
Wipe knife for each cut.
Cook for 6 mins on each side and put up on edge for a second or two to
toast the sides.
Put cloth on wire tray and cover.
(keeps them soft)
ENJOY!
Do you have a favourite recipe you would like to
share?
Send it into the Voice and we will print it.
In Memory
corridor waiting area outside the Marryat Hall. Waiting
for our names to be called, we made half-whispered
exchanges about what we had been doing these past
three years.
The loudspeaker at Mc Diarmid Park asked us to stand.
The flags were lowered in homage. A lone piper played.
I thought of sixty years and eight months ago. Ronnie
Birse, Jimmy Bruce and Davie Patterson, had gone into
a different room from me.
Preparing for D-Day and during the landings we were
very busy in the Fleet Air Arm. It was almost exactly a
year from the Marryat Hall meeting when I was able to
go home on leave. I was not long home when my
Mother gave me the news. Ronnie, Jimmy and Davie
had been called up into the Royal Tank Corp.
Their tanks had been hit during the Normandy assaults.
All three had been killed.
DIY - SAFETY TIPS
How do you know which is the correct fuse for any particular appliance?
A fuse is fitted to allow the equipment to cut out if there is a problem,
before any damage is done to either the appliance or surrounding are. If,
therefore, the fuse fitted is too large the appliance will be damaged before
the fuse cuts out. Conversely, if the fuse is not large enough it may
cut out unnecessarily - this is, however, much the safest option. If in
doubt fit a lower fuse.
Common fuses are 3, 5, and 13 amp but it is possible to get fuses at other
ratings such as 1 and 10 amp. To find out how big a fuse you should
have fitted look for the Wattage information on the electrical equipment.
For instance a television may require 300 Watts at 240 Volts AC
(Alternating Current). If you divide the rated wattage by the Voltage
(300 divided by 240) = 1.25, therefore, this item would run happily on a
2 amp fuse, usually a 3 or 5 amp is fitted, this is OK but the lower the
fuse fitted the safer the item will be as the fuse will blow quicker in the
event of a fault.
If you use 110 Volts the same principle applies - Wattage divided by
voltage (i.e. 110).
Biggest problems are with things like Nursery night lights etc., with very
low wattages. With these items even a 3 amp fuse can, theoretically, be
way too big. One solution to this is to ensure the circuit is protected by a
Residual Current Device which will trip long before a fuse will. Many
modern houses are fully protected this way at the consumer unit.
Alyth Playgroup
Back to school at long last! Put your feet up and have a rest! Ha!
You must be joking; I’ve got another two in the house! Don’t panic
though, help is here- Alyth playgroup is now up and running again.
Situated in the Community Wing, we run Every Tuesday and Thursday
morning from 9.15 to 11.15.
Last year we had many successful fundraising events, and were able
to buy a new mobile phone, a new bike, and a new hot water geyser,
as well as great parties at Halloween, Christmas, Easter and a great
teddy bears picnic at the end of term. Many thanks to all who contributed,
especially Linda, for letting us get pampered in her house,
and Graeme, Margaret and the customers of Geos Bar, for all their
‘support’ during our May fundraiser.
During this term, we will be continuing along the same theme as the
last, but we will also be incorporating some new ideas, including
special story days, children’s cookery, dance and music, as well as
all the usual arts and crafts, singing, painting, and most important of
all, playing! If you have a little one 2 ½ or over, or you know someone
who does, come along and see for yourself the fun they have. Or
give me a phone on Alyth 633034.
We would like to put out an appeal to everyone who has old toys on
the top shelf, or in the shed. If you don’t want or need them, and
they are still on good condition, bring them along to us where they
will be put to good use. If you would prefer, phone me and I will
collect.
So what are you waiting for? Don’t be stuck in the house thinking
up another new idea to keep your little angel amused – bring her
along and we can do it all for you.
That way you can go home, put your feet up, read a magazine…………….yeah
right, do the ironing more like!
Ps. Calling all old and wannabee committee members. Our AGM
will be held in Geos Bar at 8 pm, Wednesday 15 th September. Remember,
you don’t have to be a Mum to be on the committee! New
faces required please!
Alyth’s Garden Competition
I was delighted to have the time to wander round Alyth, not only judging your local competition
entrants but to appreciate what a lovely friendly town you have.
I found the quality and variety of planting superb and had great difficulty in making a final
decision. I know that there will be disappointments at the judges decision but can I also say that
this judge was disappointed that she couldn’t give more “firsts”.
It is specially pleasing when a town is made beautiful by the residents enhancing the good
work being done by the Bloom Committee.
Jam in the Den: 24 th July 2004
As a visitor to Alyth, I have always been here too late to see
the jam. But this year the holiday has fallen earlier. My husband’s
mother was born and brought up in here and we have
been visiting for about eight years. Latterly with our son, who
accompanied me on Saturday afternoon, while my husband
battled with the organ in St. Ninian’s, preparing for the following
morning’s service.
After a week of warm weather, the day was colder with regular
showers of rain. As we walked away from the church, the
organ faded and the sounds of amplified music pervaded the
air, floating up from the den and seemingly acting as a siren
for the people trickling down. All ages, some with visitors
here for the occasion, consciously dressed for the event or
waiting for friends at strategic points before descending the
long slope past the parish church.
There was little in the way of protective rain gear, perhaps so
that others would see the fine clothes and braided hair. People
preferred to sit under umbrellas or a variety of tents and awnings.
Even the cover over the stage had come adrift and
flapped in the wind so that the musicians had to stand stage
left or right to avoid the rain. All except the drummer whose
kit sat directly and damply beneath the gap. They were good,
the bands, and clearly enjoyed the support of friends, family
and groupies or the familiarity of this annual event. “It’s great
to be back and there’s lots more bands to come, “ said one
singer/guitarist as the sound man jigged up and down under
the stage to keep warm.
If this wasn’t your kind of band or your favourite music, perhaps
it soon would be. A group of students sat patiently by the
fence under the trees with their cans. A couple sat close in two
chairs, she with a wine glass, he with a pewter mug. Then
there was the future. A ten-year-old girl sang to her guitar in
homage to Oasis, seemingly unfazed by the stage, audience or
enthusiastic response. The link person chivvied the performers
along while we listened to recorded music and more musicians
arrived with different shaped cases and boxes.
As we stood more families joined the party, bringing an array
of picnics, rugs, folding chairs and even a partially erected
gazebo which was completed with impressive speed and set
off by a smoking barbecue. We walked back along the grass.
The cheery bar staff served a steady stream of customers. On
another stall, burgers and sausages helped to keep out the
damp. We tried the tombola, unsuccessfully, the bouncy castle
and looked at the plastic toys. There was a battle taking place
on the fort, but as my companion pointed out he could still
hear the band. But these other entertainments were secondary.
Along with others we were drawn back to the stage, stopping
on the way at the face-painting tent, where another practised
performer worked alongside a younger colleague.
Eventually we had to leave to collect the organist. As I
walked up the path with my, by now, pirate-faced son, the
trickle had become a steady stream of people. I lack knowledge
of names – the penalty of the tourist - but recognised
many faces. The rain stopped and the evening turned balmy
and the bands played on.
The boxes of the Alyth “ Out of School “
On the Tuesday 17th of August seven cadets and two
members of staff from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron, Air
Training Corp, visited R.A.F. Leuchars as a reward for the £ 983.00.
worth of raffle tickets that the Squadron sold in support of the 2003
Air Show. The visit was hosted by the Station’s Surface Finishing
Facility who were responsible for running the raffle at the Air Show.
The seven cadets were Corporals Sean
Donaldson, Mark Harper (both Blairgowrie),
Hayley Sinclair and Christopher
Gordon (both Alyth) and Cadets Alan
Harper, Rachel Taylor and Andrew Morrison
(all Blairgowrie), and the accompanied
staff were Flight Lieutenant Roy
Kemp (Luncarty) and Flying Officer
Michael Kay (Alyth) both Royal Air
Force Reserve (Training) Officers.
Cadets Visit to Royal Air Force Leuchars
On arrival the cadets were first taken to
Visiting Aircraft Servicing Section were
they viewed the arrival back at R.A.F.
Leuchars of 4 of the 6 Italian Air Force
AMX ground attack aircraft which are
currently based at R.A.F. Leuchars on
detachment from their home base about
10 miles south of Venice to use the training range at R.A.F.
Spadeadam in northern England. After these aircraft had shut down,
one of the young Italian pilots explained the role of the aircraft and
where his squadron is based before showing the cadets the cockpit of
the aircraft. After thanking the Italian pilot for taking time from his
busy programme the cadets had lunch.
After lunch the cadets went to 3 Flight Army Air Corp who are a
logger unit at R.A.F. Leuchars and fly the Aerospatiale Gazelle AH1
helicopter in a communication role for senior officers in Scotland and
Northern England. The duty pilot Warrant Officer Green gave the
All that remains today is the water tower
Do you have any memories about the of the old prisoner of war camp that
was just outside Alyth? There were Italians in the camp and there are still
ruins to be seen on the Leitfie road near Balhary. (July issue of Alyth
Voice)
In response to our article Mr Stuart Milne of Alyth handed in these photos
of the camp, taken just before it was demolished. The water tower on the
left is all that is left standing.
If you have any information about the camp or any stories regarding the
camp, please let us know.
This is an era gone by which we should share with the young people of
today.
Thank you, Stuart, for the use of your photos.
cadets a short brief on the role of 3 Flight Army Air Corp
before taking them out to one of the helicopters and giving
them a full safety brief. The party was then kitted out with a flying
helmet before all the cadets and staff received a 10-minute flight from
R.A.F. Leuchars around the coast towards Tayport before returning to
the base.
The cadets then spent a period of time on
the roof of the old Control Tower occupied
by 3 Flight Army Air Corp watching
the departure 6 Tornado F 3 aircraft of 56
Squadron (The Firebirds) from there
flight line adjacent to the old Control
Tower as well as the return of 4 Italian
Air Force aircraft from a training mission.
A visit to Surface Finishing Facility then
followed where cadets were able to see
the work on progress on repainting one of
the base’s Tornado aircraft. The Surface
Finishing Facility staff explained all of
the procedures and how critical the temperature
within the spray hanger is as is
the amount of paint used, as the weight of
the paint can affect the flying characteristics of the aircraft on its return
to Squadron service.
The Surface Finishing Facility staff were thanked for all their help
and assistance in making the day so brilliant and enjoyable.
If the above interested you and you are between the ages of 13 years
old to 16 years old male or female come along any Monday or
(Strathmore) Sqn, Drill Hall, Union Street, Blairgowrie and speak to
the Commanding Officer, Adjutant or any of the Cadets.

One evening recently, while returning from a visit to an old friend
near Kirriemuir, I decided to stop at the RSPB’s reserve at Kinnordy
Loch. There were an unusual number of vehicles in the car
park, but it was only after entering one of the hides that I understood
why. Several people were sitting on the benches and,
strangely for bird watchers, they were not looking out of the windows
through their binoculars. The reason, it turned out, was that
they were mothers: well, that doesn’t look quite right because, although
undoubtedly there must have been mothers among them,
some were men. These people were moth folk, not professional
lepidopterists, but amateurs, doing a course at Kindrogan Field
Study Centre at Enochdhu. Their ploy that evening was to set up
their traps and see what flew into them. I have always been intrigued
by moth traps since reading many years ago the evocative
accounts of a moth man, bicycling about the Borders to tend his
traps. I had always supposed that moth trapping must be a lethal
experience for the moths. I asked about this and was told that the
traps used to catch moths did not kill them. The chief hazard, it
appeared, was that bats would sense the many moths drawn to the
traps and catch some.
After some conversation I learned that the moth folk were going to
set up their traps and that they would be inspecting them from about
ten-o’clock until mid-night. I decided to go home for something to
eat, and then return to Kinnordy for the inspection of the traps. As I
ate my supper the skies flashed with lightning and my wireless
squelched and spluttered, distorting the music to which I was listening.
Driving back to Kinnordy the rain came on again.
‘Moths and a Rainy Evening’
By Paul Ramsay
A & R ROBERTSON & BLACK W.S PROPERTY
The summer holidays were traditionally a time when people’s thoughts were firmly on, well – holidays. No longer. These days, holidays seem to be the things which
are fitted in between buying and selling houses! Yes, the market – if not the weather – is as hot as ever, and if you’d like to join in the fun, please don’t hesitate to
call into one of our Property Shops to discuss the sale of your house – or purchase of another (both if you like) with –
At the Reserve the brilliant light of the traps and the reflection of
light from the sheets set up next to them, or on the ground beneath
the lamp, created a pale glare in the night. Moth folk, clad in waterproofs
and with head torches in their hats, moved about from trap to
trap to see what had been caught. The leaders of the group intoned
the names of the moths they were asked to identify. I don’t remember
any of these but, browsing through Waring and Townsend’s
‘Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland’, I was impressed
again by the wonderful and evocative names borne by so
many moths: Toadflax Brocade, Plain Pug, Garden Tiger, Rednecked
Footman, Death’s Head Hawkmoth, Rannoch Sprawler, to
name a few. At one moment in the evening I found myself sitting in
one of the hides by the loch, looking out as a torch beam swept the
darkness in search of moths. Occasionally a bat flew by, probably
Daubenton’s, hunting through the night. Inside the hide the conversation
was about moths and their food plants. The larvae of many
moths depend on the leaves (mainly) of only one species of plant for
their sustenance. Eradicate that plant and you destroy the moth.
What was it that lived on meadow sweet? A few days later, and
taking part in another conversation, I was able to say that ragwort,
which is scheduled as a noxious weed, was the host of the Cinnabar
moth larva and should be valued for that.
After a lull the rain began again and fell with greater intensity than
before. The moth folk decided to head for Strathardle and I drove
home. Over in Glenogil, north of Lochearnhead, the destabilised
soils had slid down over the A85.
