HAPPY EASTER TO ALL OUR READERS
Time to Pause and Think on Windfarms
There has been much debate in recent
editions of 'The Voice' surrounding the
pros and cons of wind power as a way of
providing for our energy needs. As a
resident of Alyth, and having attended
the public meeting in January about the
proposal for Drumderg, I know that
there is a great interest in this issue locally.
I understand that there have been
more than 700 objections to the Drumderg
planning application, which I believe
is a record number for any application
in Perth & Kinross. The situation is
repeated elsewhere in the county, with a
rash of proposals for wind farm developments
in the Ochils, and in the Crieff-
Dunkeld-Aberfeldy area.
The Scottish Parliament's Enterprise
& Culture Committee, on which I
sit, is presently conducting an Inquiry
into the future of renewable energy in
Scotland. As part of the Inquiry, we
have taken evidence from dozens of
witnesses, and have visited Scotland's
largest existing windfarm at Campeltown
in Argyll. It is clear from many of
the witnesses that there is growing unhappiness
with the current national planning
guidance on the siting of windfarms,
which does not set down detailed
enough criteria for local authority planners
to follow.
Back in November I proposed a
motion calling for a moratorium on new
windfarms facing local opposition until
comprehensive new planning guidance
was issued by the Scottish Executive.
Despite support from various quarters,
this call was rebuffed by Ministers.
There is now an opportunity for Perth &
Kinross Council, who are currently considering
a draft strategy on wind farms
in the county, to adopt a similar approach
and have al-cal morato-
rium, and I have been urging them to do
so.
I do not know of anyone who is
seriously opposed to renewable energy,
with all the environmental benefits that
it brings. But we have to be realistic in
our expectations. Even if we reach the
Government targets of 18% generation
from renewables by 2010 and 40% by
2020, we will still have to have fossilfuel
burning stations AND nuclear capacity
for many decades to come.
When it comes to renewable
energy production, wind turbines are
among the least efficient of the various
production methods, with expected outputs
of no more than 35% due to the
intermittency of the wind. In a report
published on 10th March 2004, the
Royal Academy of Engineering state
that onshore wind farms, with the necessary
back-up from gas-burning stations,
cost two and a half times as much as gas
or nuclear production.
I have another concern, which
the Committee Inquiry has been
investigating. By concentrating so
much on wind power, we may be missing
economic opportunities in other
technologies. I refer, for example, to
tidal and wave power. Whilst we have
factories producing wind farms for Scotland,
unfortunately the technology for
these was developed elsewhere.
We are therefore left simply with their
production jobs. I would hope that we
can learn from this when it comes to
other types of renewable energy.
Scotland should be at the forefront
of developing tidal and wave
power. Given our great natural resources,
we have the opportunity to be
ahead of the game. The danger is that
because of current
1
arrangement and in particular the current
planning regime, we are in danger
of putting all our eggs in one basket,
and spending all our resources and
energies in constructing wind turbines.
This will neglect the development of
other new technologies. I have urged
the Scottish Executive to look seriously
at this issue, and consider how
we can encourage the development of
wave and tidal power technologies
here, in preference to yet more onshore
wind.
If, however, we try to meet
Government targets mainly through
onshore wind developments, as is the
case at the moment, then we will be
covering our country with wind turbines,
and effecting the most significant
change in our rural landscape for
generations. I believe that we need an
opportunity to pause, and consider a
long-term strategy for the future energy
needs of our country. Whether or
not you agree with my views, I would
be interested to hear from you - write
to me at The Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh
EH99 1SP or e-mail
murdo.fraser.msp@scottish.parliament
.uk. I would also urge you to lobby
your local Councillors to ensure that
Perth & Kinross Council adopt an
approach in line with local opinion.
Keeping Busy
The year has got off to a flying start for the AEG with plans coming
together on several fronts. The big news, as mentioned in the last
Alyth Voice, is the footpath improvement work in the Den. The work
got underway on March 11th and seems to be progressing very well:
the project should be completed in around six weeks. The group will
now start to finalise funding for phase 2 which is for paths on the south
side of the burn. The AEG hopes that the work in progress doesn’t
cause too much inconvenience to Den visitors and will enhance
the pleasure of the area when completed.
Before moving on from the Den the litter pick in February deserves
a mention. Six group members, one non AEG adult plus
two teenage girls, Felicity Lamb and Catherine Marshall, met at
the Tullyfergus Road car park. We split into small parties in order
to cover as much ground as possible. The Den and Upper Den
wasn't too bad but a lot of fly tipped items were loaded onto a
2
trailer from the Bamff Road. As we still had time to spare we travelled
to the Diamond Jubilee Park for a thorough clean up of litter. The girls
did well and will be able to credit the afternoons work towards their
Silver Duke Of Edinburgh Award.
The March task, of planting a native species hedge along the northern
edge of the Primary School playing field, has received Scottish Natural
Heritage funding to cover the cost of the plants and mulch. We hope for
good weather and plenty of diggers to plant the 300 plus trees.
The AEG has made contact with a former member of the Alyth Curling
Club concerning the ownership of the ponds and woodland at the
back of Market Muir. It seems that a large area was in the club’s ownership
when the club folded and no objections would be made to the
AEG restoring the ponds and creating a small woodland park. The only
request would be for the concrete curling pond to remain for possible
future use. The group will carry a full survey of the site in order to
prioritise the work required and decide on funding options.
Kirsty Duncan, from the Community School, is still in a position to
provide all the plants for the flower borders planned for around the
Labyrinth. We hope to complete this task quite soon once a no mow
area has been agreed.
Paul Fannon summarised the revised version of the proposed Countryside
Access Bill and stated that the majority of concerns from the draft
had been addressed. He felt that both walkers and farmers/landowners
would know what the Act required from them when it becomes law.
Clive Bowman agreed to write a letter to P&K Planning Dept. expressing
the AEG’s concerns over the proposed wind farm at Drumderg.
The Annual General Meeting saw the group full of hope for the future.
The Treasurer, Bob Brown reported that we are in a satisfactory position
and he was duly proposed and seconded for the coming year.
The Chairmanship passed from Clive Bowman to Charles Dobb with
Clive agreeing to share the Minutes’ Secretary’s job with his wife Alison.
Clive and Charles were proposed and seconded to remain as the
group’s fund raisers. It was decided to separate the normal secretarial
duties from those of the Minutes’ Secretary and the post of General
Secretary was created with Paul Fannon voted into the job. Paul also
agreed to continue distributing the minutes. Paul Prettyman was proposed
and seconded to continue as the Publicity Secretary.
The Annual clean up of the litter from Alyth
Burn is scheduled to take place on Sunday
April 17th, meeting as in past years in the
Square at 2pm. Depending on the turn out on
the day we may extend to other parts of the
Burn or even consider the Diamond Jubilee
Park. Please pop on your Wellies and lend a
hand for a couple of hours it’s good fun and
you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped make
Alyth a cleaner, nicer place to live.
The group holds it’s monthly meetings in the Alyth Hotel at
7.30 pm on the third Thursday, we are only a small organisation
but with your help we can achieve a lot to improve the
town. Please come along to any of the meetings or tasks, you
will be made very welcome.

Still No Tesco!!
Dear Editor,
Re John White's letter in last month's
Voice about Tesco's non-delivery to
Alyth, I have been on Tesco's 'case'
for about a year now concerning the
same subject. Initially, I accepted
that our postcode was not delivered
to , but as time progressed I became
aware of the anomalies in the system
which excluded Alyth from the service
i.e. they deliver to everywhere
round about Alyth, even going
through Alyth to do so but will not
stop in Alyth!!
Last December I stopped a Tesco
van which I followed from the Alyth
roundabout to Kirriemuir. The driver
said he did go through Alyth to deliver
to parts of Angus. He gave me
a 'phone number to call in Dundee to
enquire about the service. I called the
number and was told that although
there were no deliveries to Alyth at
the moment it would maybe change
in the new year , once the Kingsway
shop was properly up-and-running.
Three weeks ago I went into the
Kingsway shop and spoke to the dot
com manager re the situation. I
showed him a map illustrating
the 'silliness' of the current situation.
He took my name and 'phone number
and said he would get back in
touch once he'd spoken to head office.
I left feeling that things would
change. He hasn't phoned yet.
Today I phoned the Kingsway shop
and asked to speak to the dot com
manager but was told he was on
holiday. The woman said that she
was aware of my inquiry but unfortunately
it was a postcode issue.
I can understand that the delivery
service has to end somewhere (I
don't know how far PH11 stretches)
and I understand that Tesco tries to
deliver to everyone inside a 2 hour
delivery 'window' but, surely it
would be simpler and fairer if they
operated a radius limit (like most
large shops) instead of a vague and
discriminatory postcode one.
If anyone would like to discuss this
matter please call Tesco Customer
Services (Dundee) on 0845 6779233
and ask to speak to the dot com manager,
Mr Graeme Doig.
I'm sure he and Tesco would be interested
to know how many disgruntled
Tesco Club Card holders there
are in Alyth!
Yours,
Dear Editor,
I would appreciate the enclosed being published in your next edition.
Alyth “Environmentalists” and the Den
Nature in the Den of Alyth is in turn icy, muddy, bumpy and messy;
inconvenient for people, but not for birds and animals whose lives
depend on it. Throughout the country there is an escalating reduction
in wildlife because of human interference. In the Den, dippers,
herons, red squirrels, to name but a few, are steadily decreasing in
numbers. Efforts should be made to stem the decline. Indeed, the
Oxford English Dictionary defines an environmentalist as one who
seeks to protect the environment.
But not Alyth’s “environmentalists” who with five road-building
and earth-moving machines are roaring and ripping through the Den.
In the name of “improvement”, “modernisation” and “userfriendliness”,
paths which have functioned for decades are being
greatly widened, smoothed and paved over, the trees, bushes and
ground cover destroyed. New paths are being built. as well.
It is no defence to argue that these road works are in only one part of
the Den. Nature is not divisible into isolated, self-contained units, as
the history of it’s despoliation so sadly teaches. Nor does doing the
work now, so that all will be ready for the summer, mitigate the
damage. The six weeks planned for the work covers a change of
season, a time when wildlife is always at it’s most vulnerable. It is
also nesting time when birds suffer most from any disruption.
That nature has value only if it is “used” or “enjoyed” is an unnatural,
outdated and destructive concept. Alyth “Environmentalists”
should recognise the fact that the Den and all the creatures living in
it really don’t need them.
Protect it, yes, but otherwise the best thing they can do is leave it
alone! (And find a more appropriate title for their group, one that
more accurately expresses their activity).
Dr.R.M Steinberg
1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175
degrees C.)
2 In a large skillet, cook the ground
beef and chopped onion until meat is no
longer pink. Remove from heat and drain off
excess fat. Stir in the vegetable beef and
cream of mushroom soups, the potatoes and
carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Divide
filling between 2 - 9 inch pie plates.
3 Roll pastry to fit the top of each pie.
Cover each pie and cut slits in top to allow
steam to escape.
4 Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to
50 minutes, or until golden brown. Let stand
on a wire rack for 15 minutes before serving.

FOOTBALL ‘LIVE’
The Wild Boar At Bamff
by Paul Ramsay
Five piglets, that was what I thought at first, but then, while walking
through the wood one day, I surprised the sow and her nestful of
young. She rose warily and, in the confusion that followed as they
scrambled to their feet, I was able to make out that there were eight:
one for each teat.
For the first three weeks of their lives the sow stayed away from the
feed and I would only meet her and the piglets by accident on my way
through the woods to check the fences. Sometimes the other sows
didn’t come to the feed either, though the brock tatties and commercial
pig nuts were always gone by the time I returned the next day.
The boar, on the other hand, nearly always came to
be fed, a solitary, dignified figure. One day they
didn’t come in I went to check the electric wire
along the Ardormie march fence.
Looking into the enclosure I saw a sow: she lay,
sunning herself in a sheltered clearing, and a few
yards further back there lay the other sow. I
jumped over the fence, walked a few paces towards
them and waited until, after a few moments, they
had roused themselves and stood up. Some yards
behind them I noticed the mother and behind her
the piglets were scuttling into the broom. In that
instance the aunt sows seemed to be providing a
protective screen for the mother and her piglets.
One thing was clear, however, and that was that the piglets, now
about a fortnight old, were mobile and had managed to cross the burn
without getting drowned. A couple of days later the mother and her
piglets turned up at feeding time, and so it has been ever since, and
REWARD OFFERED FOR
INFORMATION ON
SIGN VANDALISM
Lochside Lodge & Roundhouse Restaurant in Lintrathen are
asking for help in finding the person who is vandalising some
of their road signs leading to the Restaurant—”It has been a
problem since the end of the year and is becoming frustrating
and quite expensive in getting new signs made” said Gail Riley,
one of the owners. The problem area has mainly been from
the Alyth direction and by Airlie Castle too, “We do know one
of the latest incidents was between 5pm on Wednesday 10th
March and 8 am on Thursday 11th March by the T Junction at
Glenisla Golf Club but sometimes it is difficult to be precise”
continued Gail Riley.
If anyone has seen a person or persons tampering with the
signs or know of anyone involved, please contact Blairgowrie
Police Station on 01250 872222 or contact “The Voice” and
we will pass it on in confidence.
“We are offering a reward to anyone who is able to help us
with information to solve this as it is extremely cowardly behaviour
that we would like to stop” said Gail Riley
Anyone with information can also contact Gail or Graham
Riley on 01575 560340
with each day that passes the piglets
become bolder and bolder. They
depend on their mother’s milk, but
they are rooting about in the soil for
something and are foraging for the
adults’ feed as well.
Since the beginning of March I have
been watching the wild geese fly
north and I heard a sky lark sing for
the first time this spring as I walked
over to feed the pigs one morning.
On the second day of the piglets’
appearance at the feeding place a
pair of ravens flew overhead.
Apart from some rain lately it has been a very dry winter - Lintrathen
and the Backwater Reservoir are both still very low after the drought of
last summer. The beavers have been sealing their dams with mud and
so ensuring that they have ponds. How will the frogs fare this year?
Broadband For Alyth
Yes Please!
After a particularly slow evening on the internet, I decided to go
online and check out the progress of Alyth’s Broadband situation and
I have downloaded the following information from-
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/availability
Alyth -Exchange Code: ESALY
85% of the UK are connected to an ADSL enabled exchange. For
exchanges that have not been upgraded, we have launched a demand
registration scheme so people can, via a service provider register their
interest in broadband ADSL.
If enough people register their interest, the exchange will be upgraded.
Your exchange has reached its trigger!
We are now in the process of performing a final technical
check on the exchange in preparation for installing
Broadband ADSL.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A TRIGGER
LEVEL IS REACHED?
Once a trigger level is reached for an exchange, BT will check to
ensure all the registrations are bona fide. The exchange will than be
added to the build list to be enabled for broadband. It is usually ready
to offer broadband services within approximately ten weeks. When
dates are announced, they will be published on this website.
Exchange Information
Exchange Name: Alyth
BT Exchange Code: ESALY (Region: Scotland)
Last Update: Monday, 15 March 2004
State: Triggered. Awaiting 'Ready For Service' date.
Trigger Point: 350
Registrations: 350 (100%)
Lets hope we don’t have to wait too long for faster connections and
downloads. ( Freida)
The "Sphere" has come to Blairgowrie!
Nae Limits, Scotland's premier outdoor and extreme sports centre
have bought themselves a Sphere and will be offering it to the public
from Easter onwards.
What is a Sphere? From the outside it looks like a 4 metre high inflatable
ball. It is very similar to a Zorb. The Sphere is designed to take
2! This means that not only can you have great fun rolling and bouncing
your way down a hill, but you can watch the reactions of a friend
doing exactly the same! The harnesses are set up so that you are facing
each other the whole time!
This is the very experience you have all been waiting for. The 12 ft
sphere is fitted with 2 harnesses so that you can experience this thrill
of a lifetime with a friend. Climb inside the chamber and hold your
breath as you tumble at great speed down the glorious Perthshire hillside!
Two rolls and you'll be addicted - described by one participant
as "truly the best thing I have ever done", Sphereing has to be experienced
to be believed.
Sphereing is a great family activity - no previous experience is required
however this activity is not suitable for anyone who suffers
from epilepsy or blackouts.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
To all readers with a birthday in April
Please send in your greetings for all occasions
SCOTTISH PREMIER FOR ALYTH
Only a few weeks to go before the first performance ever seen in Scotland
of Nell's Belles takes to the stage.
We are now at the point of banning the use of scripts at rehearsals and
are holding special evenings just to go over dance routines. Our young
and talented choreographer seems to forget that not all of our company
are in the Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire mould.
Tickets go on sale on April 6th to Honorary Members and Sponsors
and to the general public on the 7th.
It is always a nervous time as we wait to see what the take up is for
tickets. Large audiences act as a catalyst to the company and we hope
that this show will play to packed houses. Seeing Billy Gordon
and Ron Kirkpatrick as a Night Nurse and a char
lady, respectively, is worth the admission money alone.
So we all hope ticket sales will be brisk and that the people of Alyth
and surrounding area come along to be transported back to the time of
the Restoration, the Plague, the Great Fire and the loves and intrigue
involved in the reign of Charles II.
Word 2000 - Nudge and Its Uses. – Part 1
Its incredible what one can do in ‘Word’ by way of
inserting things such as auto shapes, technical sketches,
flowcharts for programming, textboxes, callout boxes
and more into text documents. Usually it takes a fair
bit of research by the individual to find out how to use
all of these tools and it is very disappointing to find
that your hard work all flies apart after it has been
saved and opened again from storage in memory only to
find you have to edit it all over again because everything
has moved away from its original position.
Sketches, lines, arrowheads, textboxes and callout boxes have flown
apart and are scattered all over the page and some have even disappeared
out of the page. The solution is to give these components
position coordinates that will anchor them firmly in place on the page
and stop all that movement but first of all a word about the various
drawing tools.
1) The hold down mouse and drag operation
2) Move to here/Copy to here box
3) Copy and Paste
4) Coordinate positioning of lines and points etc. by technical drawing
methods.
Each of these operations (apart from 4) is only a rough positioning
tool and it is extremely useful therefore that we have the nudge facility.
This is a kind of fine vernier adjustment obtained by,
• Highlighting the component in question - line, arrowhead, autoshape
or whatever.
• Hold down the Ctrl. Key on the keyboard while using the four
direction arrow keys in turn at the right-hand side of the keyboard
to slowly push the figure into its exact resting position. A technical
point that may be of interest – this facility enables you move
the figure in increments of a quarter of a pixel in any of the four
directions at a time – that’s less than one thousandth of an inch.
This very useful operation is called nudging.
This last one 4) above is the ideal technical way of drawing but it is
too much for most people to work out the coordinates for each component
of a sketch before drawing it. What you can do instead is to
let Word look after the coordinates for you as follows,
• When you draw your first line or select your first autoshape for the
task ahead in creating your project right click sharply on the unformed
item and a menu will open. Make sure this is one that
contains the Format Autoshape command and left click on that
heading – Format Autoshape. This will open the Format Autoshape
box.
• Click on Location at the top of this box and then on Advanced at
the bottom of the box. This will open a new box called Advance
Layout.
• Look for two lines in this box that contain the legend ‘Absolute
position’. Note the boxes on the extreme right-hand end of these
lines. They may contain the words ‘Column’ and ‘Paragraph’
respectively. Change each box so that it contains the word
‘Margin’ in each case by clicking on the drop down invitation
arrow and selecting Margin from the dropdown menu to appear in
the title box instead.
• Keep checking often as the work of your project progresses and
maintain the status quo - restore it if necessary. They two things ie
a moved or newly inserted component and the reference datum
(Margin) tend to change each other when either one of them is
altered so you need to keep an eye on it all at both ends and especially
make sure that at the end when you finally finish the work,
‘Margin’is the heading in the box before you ‘save as’ for the last
time. That should keep it all together instead of flying apart when
it is saved and later retrieved from memory.
It should be borne in mind that if you paste this work to another
page that the sketch or whatever it is you are transferring will take
up the same position in the new page as in the old because it will
have the same position-coordinates after copying and pasting as
before. Also changing the margins in the ‘Page Setup’ after copying
and pasting will change the position of the work in the page
because the coordinates are relative to the original margin whatever
its value was by design.
