GMAC Financial Services, nowAlly Financial, announced 200 jobs atits Charlotte corporate center in 2009.Ally Financial now employs 550 peoplehere in finance, marketing, informationtechnology and related areas. In 2010,Citco Fund Services announced 258new jobs in financial services back officepositions. With 800 employees at twolocations in Charlotte, LPL Financial LLCannounced in 2012 that it would add75 to 100 technology jobs by the end of2013 with plans for additional growthin the coming years. In 2013, MetLifeInc. revealed plans to establish a hubin Charlotte for its U.S. retail business,creating more than 1,300 jobs in the city.Other significant companies in financialservices and insurance in the Charlotteregion include TIAA-CREF with 3,500employees; Allstate Insurance with1,425 employees; The Vanguard Groupwith 1,200 employees; CitiFinancialwith 1,100 employees; and AXAEquitable with 670 employees.Energy Sector VisionLeads to GrowthIn 2009, Duke Energy, along withbusiness and community leaders, began aneffort to reshape a portion of the region— the energy sector. The plan involvedgrowing Charlotte into a major nationalplayer in the energy industry by increasingmanufacturing and energy researchand promoting training for professionalengineers. Known as the nation’s NewEnergy Capital, the Charlotte region nowboasts more than 200 companies in thepower cluster, supporting nearly 25,500 jobs.After its merger with Progress Energyin 2012, Duke Energy, a Fortune 150company headquartered in Charlotte,became the nation’s largest electricpower holding company. With 7,700employees in the Charlotte region and57,700 megawatts of electric generatingcapacity, the company delivers energy toapproximately 7.2 million U.S. customers.Since 2008, more than 100 firms announced4,050 jobs in the energy industry. Whilenot all of those companies are majoremployers, there have been a few significantadditions to the energy sector. In 2009,Westinghouse Electric Companyopened an office in Charlotte in responseto growth in the nuclear energy business.The company now employs 120 peoplein Charlotte. In 2010, less than threeyears after establishing a nuclear powerpresence in uptown Charlotte, CB&I(formerly Shaw Group), announced 225new jobs, primarily in engineering. CB&Inow employs 1,200 people in Charlotte.Since 2009, Siemens Energy hasannounced several projects in Charlotte.Siemens Energy Inc. announced 226 jobs in2009, and in 2010, the company relocatedits gas turbine manufacturing operationsand nuclear instrumentation and controlgroup to Charlotte. AREVA, the world’s largest companycomprising the entire nuclear fuel cycle,announced that it would relocate its NorthAmerican headquarters to Charlotte in2013. Though the company has had apresence in Charlotte since 2002, therelocation will bring an additional 130jobs over the next four years. AREVAcurrently employs 630 people in Charlotte.SPX Corporation announced in 2010that it was expanding its Charlotteheadquarters, adding 180 jobs. TheFortune 500 provider of engineeredproducts and technologies employs 350people in Charlotte. Also in 2010, Fortune1000 company Babcock & Wilcox movedits headquarters to Charlotte. Employingmore than 150 people in Charlotte, thecompany designs, supplies and servicespower generation systems and equipment.Other significant energy companies includeSaertex USA, a major producer of fabricsused for wind turbines; Celgard, oneof the largest suppliers to the lithiumbattery industry; and Piedmont NaturalGas, a natural gas provider serving NorthCarolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.Health CareMore than 100,000 people work in healthcare in the Charlotte region, and theindustry continues to grow. Two majorhealth care systems make up nearly half ofthat employment: Carolinas HealthCareSystem and Novant Health togetheremploy more than 43,000 people inthe Charlotte region. Both systems arenationally ranked among SDI Health’s top50 integrated healthcare networks (2012).As the region’s largest major employerwith 32,500 employees, CarolinasHealthCare System, headquartered inCharlotte, is one of the largest public,not-for-profit hospital systems in thecountry. Serving patients in North andSouth Carolina, its diverse network offacilities includes academic medical centers,hospitals, healthcare pavilions, physicianpractices, surgical and rehabilitationcenters, home health agencies, nursinghomes, and hospice and palliative care.Novant Health, headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., employs more than 10,500people and operates five hospitals and120 physician primary care and specialtypractices in the region. The not-for-profitsystem serves patients and communities inNorth Carolina, South Carolina, Georgiaand Virginia. In the Charlotte area,Novant Health also manages outpatientsurgery centers, urgent care locations,senior health care and medical plazas.Health care consulting companies alsomake up a significant part of the industry.The largest health care alliance in thecountry, Premier Inc., moved its corporateheadquarters to Charlotte in 2009 andnow employs 900 people in the area.An industry leader, Premier is an allianceof 2,800 U.S. community hospitals and95,000 alternate sites focused on improvingthe health of communities.
