Known as the nation’s NewEnergy Capital, the Charlotte region nowboasts more than 200 companies in thepower cluster, supporting nearly 25,500 jobs.After its merger with Progress Energyin 2012, Duke Energy, a Fortune 150company headquartered in Charlotte,became the nation’s largest electricpower holding company. With 7,700employees in the Charlotte region and57,700 megawatts of electric generatingcapacity, the company delivers energy toapproximately 7.2 million U.S. customers.Since 2008, more than 100 firms announced4,050 jobs in the energy industry. Whilenot all of those companies are majoremployers, there have been a few significantadditions to the energy sector. In 2009,Westinghouse Electric Companyopened an office in Charlotte in responseto growth in the nuclear energy business.The company now employs 120 peoplein Charlotte.
