The Hero’s JourneyA Lesson Before DyingModern LiteratureNames in Group:Hour _____Joseph Campbell, after studying several pieces of literature and historical events, determined that most heroesgo through a specific set of stages. He called this the hero’s journey. His standard model follows these stages inthis order (Think symbolically):1. Within the hero’s “normal” world: The normal world – setting, characters, beliefs, that the hero inhabits2. Call to adventure: The hero is presented with a problem, challenge or adventure3. Refusal of the call: The hero hesitates because of fear – something happens to further tempt the hero to take upthe challenge4. The mentor: Someone to advise or guide the hero is introduced5. Outside the hero’s “normal” world: The hero commits to undertaking the challenge and agrees to face theconsequences6. Tests, allies, enemies: A series of further problems to test the hero along the way7. Approach the inmost cave: The edge of the most dangerous place in this other world8. Ordeal: The hero confronts her/his greatest fear – the height of suspense and tension in the story9. Reward: The hero seizes the object of the quest e.g. Knowledge that leads to a better “ordinary” world, a magickey or grail or an insight10. Return to the “ordinary” world, the road back: The hero still has to deal with the consequences of the reward:evil forces might pursue him/her11. Resurrection: The turning point for the hero who is forced to use this new knowledge or magic object to preventhis/her own “death”12. Return with the elixir: The hero returns to the ordinary world with new knowledge, or object to heal or benefitthe ordinary worldTo say that ALL characters go through EVERY stage in the SAME order, may not be accurate. So, how does Grantcompare to Campbell’s classic journey?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

With the members of your group, determine how Grant matches up against the archetypal heroic journey (asidentified by Campbell). I have a few variations on the concept below. Considering the most important events inthe character’s journey, decide how you will represent it. You can use one of the formats below or create yourown. Whatever you choose, make sure you account for all of the important events.• You must decide on the right shape to represent Grant’s journey. Most are circles, but they don’t have tobe.• You must decide which stages apply to Grant. Refer to Campbell’s stages. Where appropriate, you maydelete stages, add new stages, rename stages, etc.• For each stage of the journey, briefly describe how Grant fits that stage.
