Ardizzi et al. 87Experimental SectionThe catalytic tests were carried out in a batch-wise three-neck flask, with mechanicalstirring and internal thermocouple. The reaction mixture contained 0.05 mol phenol,0.05 mol benzoic acid and 1.5 g <strong>of</strong> catalyst, in the absence <strong>of</strong> solvent. The reactionwas carried out by first mixing phenol, benzoic acid and the catalyst in the powderform (this corresponds to the starting time for the reaction) and then by heating thesolid mixture up to 200°C. The result taken at 0.5 h reaction time corresponds to thebeginning <strong>of</strong> the isothermal period, after the heating step. The reaction mixture wasanalyzed by gas chromatography (Carlo Erba GC 6000 Vega Series 2 instrument),equipped with a HP-5column.
