Open Letter from the ChairpersonOctober 2003Dear Friends,Welcome to the 27 th celebration of Italian Heritage andCulture Month. This year’s event is dedicated to the centennialof Enrico Caruso’s American debut at the MetropolitanOpera on November 23, 1903.Enrico Caruso, the most famous tenor of his era, wasborn in Naples on February 25, 1873 to a poor family. He wasthe third of seven children whose mother provided him withhis primary education.“A LONG CRESCENDO” is the way a New York Timesheadline described Caruso’s career. Caruso attended aschool for choral singing in the evening while working as amechanic in the daytime. His skills as a singer were developedunder the tutelage of Guglielmo Vergine and VincenzoLombardi. Before coming to the United States, he performedin theatres throughout Italy as well as other countries inEurope and South America. In 1901, he sang La Boheme atLa Scala under Toscanini. He also sang in other operasconducted by Toscanini with whom he traveled to BuenosAires. Nearly all his splendid career was in America wherehe created, among other operas, The Girl of the GoldenWest. He continued to perform at the Metropolitan Operauntil his death which occurred while visiting his nativeNaples in 1921.This year, in keeping with the theme of Enrico Caruso’sanniversary, many of our activities will focus on Italian opera. We invite you to join us in this special celebration andto participate in as many events listed in this booklet as youpossibly can.Grazie di cuore e buon divertimento!Angelo GimondoChairpersonMese Della Cultura ItalianaItalian Heritage and Culture Month6

Italian Opera and The Great Enrico CarusoThe art of opera originated in Italy in the 1600’s, whichwas its Baroque period. The word opera is actually theshortened term for “opera in music”, a work set to music. The first opera of which music has survived, Euridice, wasperformed in 1600.However, it was the more ambitious, dramatic and opulentwork of Claudio Monteverdi, several years later, thatbrought out the virtuosity of the singers and served as amodel for the operatic composers to follow. Among themost prominent of these composers were Domenico Gabrielliand Giovanni Bononcini, in the 17 th century and, in the 19 thcentury, Gioacchino Rossini (who initiated the Romanticperiod in the early part of the century), Vincenzo Bellini,Gaetano Donizetti and Giuseppe Verdi (who actually transformedthe nature of operatic writing).(L’Arena di Verona)The long list of Italians who continued to distinguishthemselves in this most significant medium of musical, literary, artistic and dramatic expression includes Giacomo Puccini,Ruggiero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni. In the realm of opera the great tenor Enrico Caruso’ssovereignty is undisputable. His life and career began in ahumble environment of Naples, Italy, but as a young boyCaruso’s extraordinary voice drew the attention of tutorsand supporters who helped pave his way to world renown.Caruso’s career flourished and he became the star ofthe Metropolitan Opera of New York, where he presentedthe greatest number of performances of his career. It caneasily be said that Italian opera and the work of the greatEnrico Caruso remain among the most vivid examples of thecontributions of Italians and Italian Americans to cultureand world civilization.7
