CHROMIUM 2995. POTENTIAL FOR HUMAN EXPOSUREchromium concentrations in U.S. drinking water. The survey reported chromium concentrations indrinking water that ranged from 0.4 to 8.0 µg/L, with a mean value of 1.8 µg/L (Greathouse and Craun1978). These values may be higher than the actual values, due to inadequate flushing of tap water beforesample collection (EPA 1984a). The concentration of chromium in household tap water may be higherthan supply water due to corrosion of chromium-containing pipes. At a point of maximum contributionfrom corrosion of the plumbing system, the peak chromium in tap water in Boston, Massachusetts, was15 µg/L (Ohanian 1986).
