The community not only helpslive a sustainable lifestyle, but also allows recreationalopportunities adjacent to every doorstep, via“greenways”. Which allows connections to a spectrumof opportunities such as the park itself, Phoenix,and the Maricopa Trail system tieing together theencompassing parks of Phoenix.

ASU’s studentsand neighboring communities can enjoy city life without being too farfrom home.Garden Wash WalkCommunity Master PlanErica MacKenzieGarden Wash Walk celebrates indoor and outdoorrecreation while providing the option of an urban or backcountry experience. It celebrates the desert ecologicalsystems with paths that meander with the washes, streetsthat orient you to prominent peaks of the preserve, andtrailheads that provide new ways to explore.

To protect the natural environment, thedevelopment site was selected based on criteria foundin the site analysis.The main wash was protected asthe main corridor and infrastructure, sub-corridors werecreated as greenways. These greenways provide spacefor plants and animals to use as a natural corridorfrom mountain range to mountain range. Patches arerelatively small areas such as neighborhood park areadditional habitat for plants and animals.Goldmine RanchMaster Plan Community & PreserveMelanie AugerThis mission of Goldmine Ranch is to preserve thenatural systems of the site while connecting thepreserve and designating land use areas within SanTan Mountain region. In this site each resident willhave access to open space, and creating a main streetwith retail lining it to create a node for people to use.

In order to integrate thepreserve into the town a promenade alongthe edge of the preserve was incorporated.Golden Barrel RanchThe preserve at San TanAnna ChristySettled within a rich ecologicalenvironment, this urban community of5,000 is set to serve through public openspace and connecting elements thatconstantly remind one of a presence in anatural world. The ultimate end goal of thisdesign project is to place a community intothe environment without harming the landand natural systems around it.
