Background and MethodsA. Background and scope of the projecti<strong>The</strong> <strong>NIHR</strong> <strong>Carbon</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> project was instigated at therequest of Professor Dame Sally C. Davies, Director General of R&DDepartment of Health. It built on NETSCC’s audit of the carbon cost ofHTA trials, published as <strong>Carbon</strong> cost of pragmatic randomised controlledtrials: retrospective analysis of sample of trials (BMJ; 2009; 339:b4187).ii <strong>The</strong> <strong>NIHR</strong> <strong>Carbon</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> are aimed at researchersconducting research funded by the <strong>NIHR</strong>. <strong>The</strong> focus of this document is onhow methodological and practical aspects of health research impact on theassociated carbon footprint. <strong>The</strong> document provides a framework toidentify areas where sensible research design can reduce carbonemissions without adversely impacting on the validity and reliability ofresearch. <strong>The</strong> document does not cover broader sustainability issues nordoes it deal with research into how to reduce the carbon costs ofhealthcare.B. Development of the guidelinesiA working group, chaired by Professor Ian Roberts from the LondonSchool of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), was set up to developthe guidelines.
