It supports, initiates and co-ordinates teamwork between companies, as well as between companies and R&D organisations in the plastics field. The objective is the concentration of potential and competences for the increased innovative strength and international competitiveness of the partners. A special focus is placed on the needs of small and medium sized companies (SMEs). 1. Profile: RTD: Co-operation DESCRIPTION: The Kunststoff-Cluster (Plastics Cluster) is open for co-operation in projects. We have experience in dissemination, exploitation and PR of the results of such projects. It is important that the partner companies can profit of the results. The Institute is the world’s first dedicated research institution which is fully focused on the research and development of organic photovoltaic devices for terrestial solar energy conversion. The strategical structuring of the research and development in LIOS is as follows: 1.) It is a photophysical experimental research laboratory, which specializes on the following studies of organic semiconductors and photoactive nanostructures: - Photoinduced UV-VIS optical absorption from cw- down to nanosecond domains - Photoinduced Fourier transform infrared absorption in near- and mid-IR - Photoluminescence and photocurrent detected magnetic resonance to investigate the spin multiplicity of the excited state absorption-emission bands (ODMR) - In situ spectroelectrochemical methods to characterize the radical states of the donor as well as acceptor components for identification of the photoexcited radicals - Nanostructure investigations using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning near field optical microscopy (SNOM) 2.) It has an organic semiconductors’ thin film fabrication capability based on spin casting, doctor blading, molecular beam epitaxy and hot wall beam epitaxy. 3.) It has a prototype development facility based on fully air free argon based systems, which are equiped with device fabrication as well as in situ testing (under argon) with AM1.5 simulators and spectral photocurrent facilities. Thus, LIOS is capable of directly investigating the photophysical properties of new materials down to the testing of prototypes which are produced also in house. Furthermore, the general facilities of the Technisch Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät at the University of Linz are accessible directly for other research needs. By date of September 2006, LIOS has 16 scientific members which represent and study the different aspects of research and development as described above. LIOS is also interconnected with a large number of international universities and research facilities through bilateral and/or multilateral research contracts. LIOS is also aiming to transfer its innovations to the industry by means of spin-off companies which take up a specialized part of the research and development and create a bridge to direct applications. 1.
