Short description of company
Attophotonics® Biosciences GmbH is a nanotechnology based company targeting to redesign products of
everyday life into colored, interactive and intelligent materials and devices.
By using multiple nano-layers and nano-structured surfaces Attophotonics creates a wide range of colors without
the need of pigments. The layers are designed to specifically reflect some spectral sub-fraction whereas other
electromagnetic waves are absorbed efficiently. Based on the particular nanostructure the surfaces shines and
even sparkles in a well defined color. Colored materials in combination with sensory nano-features and
interactive properties is one of the promising concepts of Attophotonic’s - nanotechnology.
The innovative products are manifold reaching from novel smart surface materials for design to films, foils and
labels visually indicating the quality and status of packed products. The surface of any product might be covered
by these active nanolayers. The reactive nano-films interact with the environment visually indicating humidity,
condensing water, temperature, pH, ions, magnetic field, electric current, pressure and a wide variety of other
parameters. A tag, mounted onto a product, is used by the customer and salesperson to test status and identity
of product in the supermarket. Novel ski-surfaces display a firework of colors if contacted with water or snow.
Optical waves are actively switches in between guiding fibers.
The nano-color-effect is further more a valuable sensor for biomedical diagnostics. Point-of-care-devices without
complex and expensive detection devices allow to gain information on the health status cost-efficient and
sometimes even visible to the eye.
Attophotonics moreover provides project management and scientific backup for partners in France, Germany, the
Netherlands or US with access to proprietary technologies and patents in nano& bionanotechnology including
metal surface design, thin film technology, (bio)chips, nanocluster-labels, sensor-tags, automated analytical
systems, real-time PCR and POC-devices. Attophotonics was founded in 2004 near the Vienna Biocenter and
after significant growth moved to the TFZ Wiener Neustadt in 2005. Based on a many years of scientific backup
since 1994 in collaboration with the universities of Delft, Graz and Vienna and new partnerships with the
‚Kunststoffcluster’ and EcoPlus, supported by the FFG, Attophotonics speeds up is growth in direct collaboration
with the Fachhochschule Wiener Neustadt.
