Production of individual structural components out of nanostructured titanium for high-technology sportive goods (bicycles, mountaineering articles) allows to increase strength of the structure and at the same time reduce its weight. MAIN ADVANTADGES / BENEFITS: Pure titanium, desirable for use in a variety of medical (comprising dental) applications, including implants, is chemically and biologically more compatible with human fluids and tissue. Early studies show patients recover 5x faster from surgeries with pure-Ti. However, pure-Titanium has been too weak for weight-bearing prostheses, as found in leg or hipbone implants, as the strength of pure titanium is less than half the strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. We have increased the strength of pure Nano-titanium to levels higher than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, preserving a higher biological compatibility of Ti. The use of pure Nano-Ti will reduce the thickness and weight of weightbearing implants by approximately 20-30%, with the same percentage cost reduction expected, since Nano-Ti can be produced with on-par unit-volume costs as (regular) pure Ti and Ti-alloys. High-strength Nano-Ti is also very attractive for producing various sportive goods (for bikes, sports cars, mountaineering articles, tennis-rackets, etc). In particular, production of individual structural components for trial bicycles allows to reduce their weight by up to 30% and simultaneously increase strength margin by 2-3 times. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: Nanostructured (CP Grade 2) titanium produced in Ufa has the following characteristics: ultimate tensile strength – 1000 MPa and higher, endurance limit – 500 MPa and higher. Nanostructured Ti alloy Ti-6Al-4V: ultimate tensile strength – 1370 MPa, endurance limit – 700 MPa. These characteristics of nanostructured Mg and Al alloys are 2-4 times higher than those of conventional (coarse-grained) alloys. Nanostructured TiNi alloys have an enhanced shape-memory effect. We have mastered production of rod-shaped billets with diameters reaching 30 mm. We are now mastering production of tubes with diameters up to 30 mm. CURRENT STAGE OF DEVELOPMEN Processing regimes have been developed for fabrication of long-length nanostructured rods from Titanium and its alloys. Prototypes of new set-ups for deformation and shape-forming tools have also been developed and are available for demonstration. Pilot samples of implants, medical instruments, mountaineering articles and component items for trial bicycles have been produced. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (IPR): We have a good patent coverage: we hold several protective documents protecting our technology, including Russian and U.S. patents. Over the years, our researchers have published several hundred papers describing the offered technology in Russian and international scientific journals (such as Nature, Nature Materials, Progress in Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering, etc.), as well as several monographs. MARKET APPLICATIONS: The target market comprises orthopedic, dental and traumatological centers and clinics of all industrially developed countries. There are no analogous technologies available at the market. Nanostructured titanium semi-products are characterized by higher strength, ductility, fatigue resistance accompanied by good biological compatibility with living tissue as compared with conventional titanium materials available at the market . In sports, the target market (consumers) is comprised by mountaineers, bicyclists-sportsmen (both individual sportsmen and those combined in sports clubs and national associations). Nanostructured materials can be applied in those sport areas where high strength and wear resistance and at the same time low weight are required (in bicycles, mountaineering articles, etc.). TYPE OF COLLABORATION SOUGH We are interested in different types of collaboration, in particular RTD collaboration, industrial partnership and investing. a) In the framework of RTD collaboration, we would like to combine the efforts, knowledge and experience of our researchers with researchers from other countries in order to perfect the offered technology and apply it on other areas. b) Introduction of the offered technology outside laboratory-scale and pilot production requires attracting a large amount of material, technical and human resources. This need can be fulfilled by existing industrial companies or by companies that will be established on the basis of the production to be set up. c) Our R&D and prospective establishment of commercial production requires inflow of investments from private and public (government) investors. Companies that have the capability to apply a computer-aided design system for designing and production of high-technology items and structures. 3. Research institutions (Universities, RTS institutes) that carry out research in the area of biotechnologies, materials science and metalworking. 5.
