At present the Institute conducts investigations in the field of physics and mechanics of SPD, development of SPD processing methods, fundamental studies of the structure, mechanical and functional properties and performance of SPDprocessed nanomaterials. Practical applications of bulk nanostructured materials in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Medicine and Sports are of special importance. These works are carried out together with the Technical Center Iskra (Ufa, Russia), Los Alamos Nationa Laboratory (Los Alamos, NM, USA) and Metallicum LLC (Santa Fe, NM, USA) in close cooperation with Russian and international research centers. 1. Profile: Offer: Bulk nanostructured metals for medical purposes and sports DESCRIPTION: The technology is a Nano-materials development and production technique for pure Titanium, Aluminum and other metals. The use of severe plastic deformation (SPD) method that is used to process materials with standard properties underlies the technology. The developed technology enables fabrication of nanostructured rods with diameters ranging from 24 to 5 mm and lengths from 150 to 2000 mm and nanostructured tubes with diameters reaching 30 mm. Pre-production volumes are available today. Patent coverage in Russia and the USA is good and extensive know-how backs the technology. The semi-products have undergone an independent laboratory testing in Russia (at DEOST, Conmet and “MTI” companies) and the USA (at Metallicum LLC and Los Alamos National Laboratory). The tests have shown that the level of mechanical properties in the semi-products is 1,5 -2 times higher than the standard level. INNOVATIVE ASPECTS: Nanostructured materials produced using SPD methods are characterized by extraordinary structural and functional properties. Due to unusual physical and mechanical properties of this material, in particular high tensile strength and ductility, as well as fatigue life (up to 3-4 times higher than for traditional alloys), the use of these materials has allowed us to develop new promising implants providing for: a) safe fixation of bone fragments, in spite of many openings for screws; b) high efficiency of correction and fixation of vertebras in the device for restoration of spinal functions. At the same time, in comparison with analogous devices the advantages of our innovative devices are as follows: 1) high biological compatibility owing to the chemical purity of titanium with a nanostructure (higher than that of any other Ti alloy); 2) considerable increase in functional capabilities due to enhanced mechanical and fatigue characteristics accompanied by reduced weight; 3) original design of several implants.
