The section onBeach-Oak Park was a critical element in a $153,330 land acquisition grant request submitted to the Illinois Department of NaturalResources (IDNR) in July 2012. As of late February, award winners have not been announced but if among those funded, the ParkDistrict would purchase a property adjacent to Beach-Oak Park. The master plan is scheduled to be rolled-out again for a Beach-OakPark development grant that would be completed in 2015.The master plan section for Memorial Park is the framework to another IDNR grant request being submitted in July of this year. Thatgrant would pay $400,000 towards an approximate $800,000 improvement in 2014. If awarded, and depending upon the outcome offuture public hearings, improvements could include a new family sized picnic shelter located on the existing site of the Oak Avenueshelter house, a new splash pad playground, upgrades to the existing playground, and improvements in the southwest corner of thepark that could accommodate community special events. Look for announcements in March and April announcing a public hearingschedule that will unveil detailed development plans.MEMORIAL PARK LIGHTED SIGNYour patience while waiting for the new message board in Memorial Park along La Grange Road was greatly appreciated. As reportedearlier, a long delay occurred during Commonwealth Edison’s work to provide electric service. The new sign is being used to announceCommunity Park District and non-Park District events. Other units of local government and La Grange Park not-for-profitorganizations who would like to announce an event can go to the Park District website (www.cpdlgp.org) to download a CommunitySign Request Form. The form provides all necessary instruction.VETERAN’S MEMORIAL NEWSThe Community Park District’s Veteran’s Memorial Committee will launch a fund raising drive this spring to pay the constructioncosts of a new Veteran’s Memorial. The Memorial will be relocated to the more visible intersection of Oak and Sherwood Avenues. At this writing the final conceptual plan is being finalized and should now be available for viewing on the Park District website and inother prominent places throughout the Village. The Memorial will recognize all past, present and future veterans of all six branches of our armed services, including the Army, Navy,Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines. Depending on fund raising response, the first Memorial Day Service will beheld at the new Memorial on May 26, 2014.REFORESTATION NEWSIn January of this year our Park District Park Maintenance Staff recognized tell-tale signs of Emerald Green Ash Bore infestation, which unfortunately lead to the removal of thirty-three Ash trees from our parks. The immediate response was to apply for a reforestationgrant made available through the Metropolitan Mayoral Caucus and funded by the National Forestry Service. If approved, the Park District will receive a $6,930 reimbursement towards the cost of tree replacement.Replacement trees will be 2” – 3” caliper sized trees. To save money the trees will be planted by the Park District’s Park MaintenanceStaff. The Community Park District and Village of La Grange Park, who is plagued with the same Ash Tree problem, will further economizeby sharing tree planting equipment. A wide variety of trees native to northern Illinois are being planted so that any futuredisease will not have such a dramatic effect. The trees will be planted this spring and fall depending upon the variety.Community Park District 708-354-4580 3
