Palos Verdes High SchoolClass of 2012SENIOR ACTIVITIES PACKETDear Parents:April 1, 2012Palos Verdes High School is very proud to present its eighth graduating class, the Classof 2012. The many activities which honor and reward seniors for their four arduousyears are now being organized. Parents may share in some of them, while others arereserved exclusively for students. It is our intent, through this informational bulletin toacquaint you with all the activities which your son or daughter is entitled to attend and, those in which you would have an interest. We request that you review this bulletin withyour son or daughter. The Senior Graduation Committee feels that a clearunderstanding of the rules governing the activities will assist all of us in enjoying themfully.BE AWARE OF SCHOOL RULESThis is a very fun time of year for seniors, but potentially a very dangerous time. Thebiggest concerns are the Prom and Senior Excursion. However, any drug or alcoholinvolvement (use, possession, selling, and possession of drug paraphernalia) at schoolor a school activity fall into the same category. Drug and alcohol infractions call for asuspension and 8 weeks social probation which prohibits students from participating inall school activities, including Prom, Senior Day, Baccalaureate and Graduation. Thiscan be reduced to 4 weeks by attending stipulated counseling sessions. Check thecalendar. Both the Prom and Senior Excursion fall within this time period. If studentsviolate these rules, forget about participation in the graduation day ceremony. We aresorry that relatives planned to fly in from across the country. The stakes are very high.IF STUDENTS CANNOT FOLLOW THESE RULES THEY SHOULD NOT ATTEND THEPROM OR SENIOR EXCURSION!Thank you so much for your continued support of Palos Verdes HighSchool. Should you have any questions or concerns regarding senior activities, pleasecontact the PVHS Activities Mrs. Jama Maxfield at (310) 378-8471 x 601 ormaxfieldj@pvpusd.k12.ca.usSincerely,Dr. Nick StephanyPrincipal

Yells, cheers, orother inappropriate noise after a student’s name is read completely drowns outthe name of the next student receiving a diploma. Not only does the noisedisturb others, it robs another family of their right to hear the name of theirgraduate. These selfish actions on the part of a few have literally ruinedgraduation for some families in past years.

You are respectfully requested not to permit your family or guests to distractfrom a beautiful and meaningful ceremony.Graduation, while not a formal occasion, is a ceremony of dignity, and guestsare expected to dress and act appropriately. Standing on chairs to take picturesor approaching the stage area at any time during the ceremony is bothdangerous and an irritation to those whose view is blocked and is forbidden.Parents and friends are urged to complete picture-taking sessions as quickly aspossible after the ceremony ends. The actual diploma will not be issued untilafter the ceremony and will be released only to the graduating senior. Diplomaswill be distributed following the ceremony in counseling office. NHS stoles mustbe returned following graduation. If your student does not wish to pick up his/her diploma after the Graduationceremony, he/she may come to the Counseling Office on Monday, June 11, 2012from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and pick it up. However, if your student is unavailable, you must have a note from your child that clearly states you have permission topick up his/her diploma. Your child’s diploma belongs to him/her and can only bereleased to you with his/her permission.PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOGRAPHY AT GRADUATIONWe know that most families want souvenir photos of their son or daughter atgraduation. The senior class has hired professionals to photograph each graduateas he or she receives the diploma. The video cameraman will produce a tape thatwill highlight the graduation ceremony, baccalaureate and senior breakfast. This procedure ELIMINATES:Dozens of “Parent Photographers/Video Operators” standing- in the way of the graduates- on the steps- on, in front of, and behind the stage- in amongst the bandDozens of complaints during and after the ceremony about:- photographers blocking the view of the audience

- family photographers spoiling the shot of the professionalphotographers- the noise as photographers reposition students for a better pose- the shouting of instructions to students to “smile,” “slow down,”“wait a second,” etc.- the inability of guests to see the student or hear the name of thegraduate at the moment of receiving the diplomaOur prior experiences with these professionals were so positive that we havehired them for this event. Please consult the enclosed envelopes for additional details concerning cost, ordering procedure and delivery. To order the Graduation HandshakePhotograph, please mail the enclosed order form (Form # 17) to thephotography studio, or return the order envelope to the Student Store prior tograduation. The Senior Video will be in DVD format and the cost is $75.00 (Form# 9).This procedure will give us a ceremony that is both dignified and appropriate. Iteliminates confusion and permits all guests to hear without the distractions. Weappreciate your cooperation and compliance.RULE: We will not permit any photographers (family or otherwise) to approachthe stage during the ceremony for any reason. Of course, we will permit picturesas the graduating class enters the Senior Park. The stage will be left in orderfollowing the ceremony so family pictures may be taken. The rule is simple…wedo not want anyone to leave his or her seat to take pictures during theceremony.Photographers, please be considerate of those around you. We ask thatphotographers do not stand in front of our elderly and handicapped guests inorder to take photographs. This is completely inappropriate, and we respectfullyrequest that it not occur. In addition, photographers are requested not to crossthe barriers between the graduates and the crowd until after the ceremony.
