He has special garbmade for himself, as well as a huge circle of sheets of paper that hebedecks with cabalistic signs. He has read a good many books on <strong>the</strong>occult; <strong>the</strong> critics note that he invents nothing, but simply follows <strong>the</strong>usual procedures. Simultaneously, he pursues his design on Genoveffa:for magic reasons, <strong>the</strong>y ba<strong>the</strong> toge<strong>the</strong>r, each washing <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. This isa wise precaution, since Genoveffa is a peasant girl from Cesena; at <strong>the</strong>same time, it ensures that Casanova will be able to seduce her later—<strong>the</strong> more so as <strong>the</strong> virgin sleeps in his bed, where, for <strong>the</strong> time being, herespects her virginity. The farce continues.When <strong>the</strong> time is ripe, Casanova goes outside at night, and, wearinga magic surplice, takes his place inside his paper circle. At precisely thismoment, a storm comes up. This is enough, as will appear in a moment,to throw our hero into a state of panic. Just before telling us that hestepped into <strong>the</strong> circle, he utters a sentence that has an odd ring for ananalyst: he says $hat he knew that his operation would fail. Impossible,and he knew it! Implicit in a sentence of this sort is an unspoken "butall <strong>the</strong> same." I think that it would be a mistake to evoke <strong>the</strong> notion ofdoubt here, in whatever form, and to say that Casanova was not all thatsure he would fail. In fact, he has no doubts about <strong>the</strong> inevitable failureof a magic operation that he himself calls a farce; he is as certain aswe are. Verleugnung has nothing to do with doubt. The belief in magicis disavowed and very conveniently assigned to <strong>the</strong> credulous. But weshall now see what happens to our magician when, at <strong>the</strong> worst possiblemoment, he has to manage with no one credulous on hand.Indeed, when <strong>the</strong> storm breaks, his first thought is cast in <strong>the</strong> formof an eloquent regret: "How I should have been admired," he exclaims,"if I had dared to predict it!" (3: 4). His assessment of <strong>the</strong> situation isright on <strong>the</strong> mark: if he had predicted <strong>the</strong> storm, <strong>the</strong> farce could havegone on amid <strong>the</strong> thunder and lightning. Superficially, one might say thatCasanova would have had <strong>the</strong> storm on his side and remained master of<strong>the</strong> situation, in a position of superiority. But this explanation explainsnothing: no one has contested his mastery of <strong>the</strong> situation, and he is stillin a position to run <strong>the</strong> show as he likes. The reversal precipitated by <strong>the</strong>absence of a gull takes place within Casanova himself. The role assignedto <strong>the</strong> credulous has to fall to someone, after all.
