SizingSizing conversion tablesIntroductionThere are many footwear size measurement systems. In thismanual, we refer to the three most predominant systems:• UK• USA (Boston)• Europe (Paris Point).Given the lack of standardisation in the footwear industry,suppliers and agents are reminded to check the insole/lastbottom measurements and girths against the Coles GroupLimited standards in this manual.The following conversion tables are based on SATRA insolelength measurements and are categorised by gender and age asfollows:• women’s shoe size• men’s shoe size• infants’ shoe size• toddlers’ shoe size• children’s shoe size• youths’ and misses’ shoe size.2 Coles Group Limited 2 June 2000

SizingInsole measurement and sizingIntroductionDetermining theinsole lengthThe size standards presented provide minimum and maximummeasurements for insole lengths. As a general rule:• maximum lengths are required for closed toe shoes withconventional shaped toes and heel heights.• minimum lengths are required for fully open toed sandalswith conventional heel height, soft upper footwear with notoe puff or counter.• shoes with a heel height of more than 5 cm, also sandals witha partly open toe require measurements roughly half waybetween the minimum and maximum lengths.• extra length is required to compensate for pointy toe stylesand for flattened or receding toe styles.Where a sandal does not have a clearly marked insole/outsoleline, an allowance of 2 mm at the toe and heel is made, (that is,the insole is 4 mm less than the total length).Refer to the insole diagram below.10 Coles Group Limited 2 June 2000

SizingBack height and under ankleIntroductionMeasurements in the following table:• refer to a standard shoe• are presented as a guideline for Coles Group Limitedsuppliers.Use an allowance for style in conjunction with these figures.The following graphic provides an example of the areas of theshoe to be measured.MeasurementsThese measurements affect the ‘sit’ of an ankle strap and the‘clip’ of a shoe, especially a slip-on style. The back height iscalculated as 1/5 of the last bottom length (which gives thecounter height) plus 3–5 mm for the outer material above this.Design features such as a soft padded collar are in addition tothe back and under ankle heights.The back strap of a sandal should be 4–6 mm above the normalback height.
