At <strong>Madeira</strong> and the <strong>Azores</strong>, this species lives only in deep water, at the <strong>Canary</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> it can also be<br />
encountered in shallow water. Attains up to eight years of age. In very deep water, this species can be yellow.<br />

Painted comber (Serranus scriba)<br />
Up to 35 cm long. <strong>Canary</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>. 3 <strong>–</strong> 150 m depth.<br />
The Painted comber has blue markings looking like Arabic letters on the gill covers. Atlantic animals are so<br />
different in colour and body shape from Mediterranean ones that they probably will turn out to be a separate<br />

Dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus)<br />
Up to 1.5 m long. <strong>Madeira</strong>, <strong>Canary</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>, <strong>Azores</strong>. 3 <strong>–</strong> 200 m depth.<br />
Like all big grouper species (Epinephelus and Mycteroperca), this species also changes sex: juveniles turn<br />
into females at a size of about 40 cm; with a size of at least 80 cm, they then turn into males. One of the<br />
