ROTARYInTERnATIOnAlkalyan Banerjeepresident, Rotary international 2011 - 2012In 2011-12, I ask Rotarians to Reach Within to EmbraceHumanity. I ask you to look within yourselves, to understandthat all of humanity has the same dreams, similar hopes, the same aspirations and similar problems. Whoever we areand wherever we live, each of us yearns for the same peaceand contentment and for the same fulfillment in our dailylives. What we work to bring to others, we must first findwithin ourselves because what we wish for ourselves is whatothers wish for themselves as well. Before talking globallyabout peace, we needfirst to start with ourselvesand then work outward.First, we find our ownpeace, and then work toestablish peace in ourhomes and our familiesand our communities. We cannot work to buildpeace in the world withoutfirst building it in our own homes; if we are to create peace, friendship, and tolerance on a global scale, we must firstpractice it in our own neighborhoods. When we have peacein ourselves, we have peace in our home; when thereis peace in our home, we have peace that we can sharewith others. As we find joy and satisfaction in being withthe people we love and care about, we are able to care forothers as well.I believe that if you strengthen yourself, you strengthen thosewho share your life and your home. Once you have a strongfamily, you have a strong base on which to build. Those whohave that inner strength can work together better to servehumanity, and that is what we do in Rotary. In the year ahead, we will have three emphases in our Rotaryservice: to strengthen our family, to continue what we dobest, and to change whatever needs to be changed. Our first emphasis in this Rotary year will be the family. Thefamily is where everything begins: All our service, everythingwe wish to achieve in our world, begins here. The motherand the child are at the core of every family; when we beginthere, we can carry our work forward through individual livesand throughout the community. Our second emphasis will be on continuity, on finding thethings that we do well and taking them to the next level. Each of us has found success in Rotary service, and weshould build on those successes, expand on them, sothat we can help even more people in the future. We mustcontinue our work for cleaner and safer water, mitigatingdisease and illness, spreading literacy, working with and forthe new generation, and striving for peace. At the same time, we also know that there are things we couldbe doing better and things which we should be changing. We must have the courage to see these, to identify them, and to work to make the changes we need to make.Mohandas Gandhi said, “You must be the change you wishto see in the world.” In Rotary, we endeavor to live ethicallyand honestly, to share friendship and goodwill, to see thetrue worth of every human being. We are not interested inthe lowest common denominator, for Rotary is anything butcommon and Rotarians are uncommon people. That is whywe work to elevate ourselves and, thereby, to elevate theworld. All of us in Rotary are looking to change the world, for whyelse would we be Rotarians? We believe that our world canbe happier, healthier, and more peaceful. We believe that thefuture can and will be better than the past. We are idealists, and we bring our ideals to life through our Rotary service. And so, our third emphasis in 2011-12 will be change, andwe start by being the change we wish to see in the world. If we wish for peace, we start by living in peace ourselves,in our homes and in our communities. If we wish for anend to polio or to any other disease in the world, if we wishenvironmental degradation to stop, if we wish to reducechild mortality, to spread literacy or to prevent hunger, wemust be the instrument of that change and recognise that itmust start within each of us.Let us Reach Within to Embrace Humanity. And in peace, harmony, and friendship, let us bring change and a morejoyful future for us all.Kalyan BanerjeePresident,Rotary International, 2011-12Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011 9

ThE ROTARY CluBOF BAngkOk SOuThAndrew MacPhersonRCBS president, 2010 - 2011My fellow Rotarians,They say all good things must come to an end and forme I have to say that it has been not only enjoyable, but also both an honour and a privilege, to have beenyour President this past year. I am proud of every oneof you who have made the role a joyful and pleasantexperience.Having great support from the energetic DistrictGovernor Suchada and her attentive AssistantGovernor Ateeb really does help make a President’slife easier and I am grateful to them both for their helpand guidance. The directors all have their own teams and I’m notgoing to try and recognise them here, as I’m surethat the directors will be recognising these individualRotarians within their own reports. The biggest thanks need to go to our board ofdirectors: Club Secretary Rtn Nick Pisalyaput kept meup to date with the ever changing world of Rotary, RtnGareth Marshall ensured that we were communicatingamongst ourselves and others in our district, Rtn MikeEllis ensured that we had plenty of funds raised tofund the projects that Rtn Rudy van der Hoeven wasproposing and Rtn Leo Alexandersen was ensuringthat there were plenty of Matching Grants to keepeveryone busy. Meanwhile Rtn Mike Doyle ensuredthat the Club Admin and Fellowship events wereplentiful and enjoyable, whilst Rtn Jon Plate ensuredthat, as Treasurer, all the money was collected anddisbursed in a timely manner, and all the time this wasgoing on our two VPs, Rtn Prasobsook Thawilvejjakuland Rtn Manu Mekdhanasarn, were watching overeverything to ensure a smooth year was enjoyed byall. President Elect Mark ensured there was a steadyflow of new members to replace those that weren’table to stay in the club. But let’s not forget our SAA,Rtn Thanakorn Telan, who ensured Friday meetingswere kept orderly and, last but by no means least, ourIPP John Quarmby who gave us all the benefit of hisexperience as the Immediate Past President. As seen above, I have had great support from all theboard members and I’d like to make special mentionof those that served for their first time on our board;Rtn Jon, Rtn Gareth and Rtn Rudy. We originallyhad another two potential first timers on the board, however due to other commitments they were unableto take up their positions.I cannot go without mentioning the support oftwo exceptional people who are dedicated toBangkok South and make a president’s life so muchsmoother than it could be, and they are Khun PrakaiChongsithipol and Rtn Gary White.Did I do everything that I wanted to do in my year asPresident? No, and that’s just the nature of the job. Iam, however, very pleased to say that we did manageto get a significant new funding partner, CIMB BankFoundation, up and running in the last few weeks ofthis Rotary year. Regrets? Yes, that I didn’t manage tojoin all the events that our club organized. There was a bit of sadness too, as we had four ofour former members pass away during this pastRotary year: Past President Brian Hurrell, and formerRotarians Ian Webb, Tom Brown and Yokin Sinchawla.I know that I’m handing over to the very capableIncoming President Mark and his board and I’mlooking forward to another great year of Rotaryat Bangkok South, especially in this the year wecelebrate our 50th anniversary.Yours in Rotary,Andrew MacPhersonPresident 2010-201112 Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011

A ChAT wITh OuRnEw PRESIdEnTMARk BuTTERSRotarian Mark Butters will find his year as President of theRotary Club of Bangkok South to be a year of milestones – forRotary and for himself and his family.Mark will become the club’s 55th President on July 1, 2011. Theyear ahead holds challenges and celebrations. These include:• The Club’s 50th anniversary in August 2011, with themain celebrations in October• The Rotary International Convention in Bangkok in May, 2012• The 21st anniversary, in September, of his arrival in Bangkok• His 50th birthday, in October• The expected birth of twins to his wife, Atchara, a lawyer, also in October.President Mark admitted to feeling both excited and nervous.“It will be a challenging year,” he said in an interview. “It is nota normal year.” He was speaking about Rotary but he couldalso have been speaking personally.Mark was born in Solihull, but he grew up in the Cotswoldsand Staffordshire. As a result, he is a supporter of the Wolves(an English football team, for the uninitiated). After leaving school, he went straight to work and latercompleted his accountancy qualification at Liverpool, beforegoing on to work for KPMG in Birmingham. He came to Thailand to join a local firm, on a two-yearcontract. He stayed with the firm for 11 years but, as somany others have done, he found his personal contract withBangkok and Thailand to be even more enduring. He joined RSM Advisory (Thailand), a leading businessconsultancy, when it started up here. The firm recently markedits 10th anniversary.Mark joined RCBS nine years ago, having been introducedby Mike Doyle, who is serving as Vice-President in 2011-12.“I found the Club had a good atmosphere – and I knew alot of the people there,” Mark said. “They were a welcomingcrowd. The American Ambassador was the guest speaker. And I immediately saw the Club had a good program. I alsofound it was a good meal at the end of the week. Plus it was agentle way of giving things back to the community.”“Giving back” has had its moments. Mark recalled an earlyexcursion for Kids’ Day Out, when he was in charge of one ofthe buses. One of the wheels malfunctioned and they had tocall for a replacement bus.“The replacement bus didn’t turn up, so we were a busdown,” he said. “We got the kids and helpers onto the otherbuses. (The late) Ian Webb and I were left. He said: ‘Let’s getin the ambulance’. So we went back in the ambulance, withthe nurses serving drinks.”Mark sees 2011-12 as an important year for Rotary in Thailand.“In May next year we’ll have the RI Convention. It will be achallenge to get 5000 Thailand people to come. Rotary will belooking to us and the other English-speaking clubs to provideassistance. With 30-40,000 Rotarians attending, it will be agreat opportunity for all our members to meet Rotarians fromall around the world. “One of the challenges for the Club, Mark said, was toincrease the diversity of the membership – by nationality,by age (younger) and by business background. Inevitably,at some time in the future, the Club would admit womenmembers. “But I can’t see it happening in the near future,”he said.”Anyway, there are some all-female clubs, so we arenot alone.”Mark summed up his hopes for the year ahead. “I hope allmembers enjoy the anniversary year – and look forward to thenext 50 years.”Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011 19

TREASuRERAnnuAl REPORT 2010 - 2011Jon PlatetreasurerGiven the nature of the Club and its activities, a formal Profitand Loss Statement and even Balance Sheet is somewhatmisleading. The vast majority of the funds in our accounts areheld in trust or are designated for charitable purposes. Only a tinyfraction of our total annual income and outgo can be classified asbelonging directly to members. Therefore, rather than reviewingperformance as a whole, it is far more pertinent to discuss theresult of the various funds that make up the club’s operations. This is done below, with a summary of pertinent figures, plus abalance sheet for good order, following. All monetary amountsare THB 000’s.The first is the Club Operating Fund, through which theclub’s administration is run. For the 11 months of the 2010-11 Rotary year to 31st May, this fund recorded a surplus ofTHB 79, versus a budgeted year to date result of THB 80.A shortfall in member fees due to lower member numberswas offset by sale of club shirts, exchange rate savingsand expenses slightly under budget. June always reports adeficit as it has little or no income, and the full year estimateis for a surplus of about THB 10 versus budget of THB 4.Our operating expenses are nearly fully covered by dues, without recourse to significant other income, and the SouthWind is self-financing. A summary is shown below. The Fellowship Account, through which we run socialfunctions and fund expenses for visiting Rotarians andpublic relations, reported a deficit of THB 20 (excluding 2011Ball income in advance) for the year. The Reserve Account, which is a fund held for emergenciesand extraordinary expenses, and is supplemented by newmember entrance fees, increased to THB 421. Some ofthis might need to be used for the Club’s upcoming 50thanniversary celebrations. The Luang Sit Fund accounts showed a deficit of THB 30.Donations (THB 18) boosted the Fund to THB 2.265 million.Scholarships for 132 students were funded by Luang SitFellowships and Fund interest (annual and accumulated). The Sister Rita Fund reported a deficit of THB 95 afterinterest earnings and the annual donation to the home. Thelatter is THB 120 p.a., funded from interest earnings andby utilization of the fund principal. With a balance of THB1.981 million, there is sufficient money to cover the annualdonation for nearly 20 years.Charity Funds (including Rotary Foundation Matching Grants,Paul Harris Fellowships and sundry accounts/funds) startedthe year with THB 2,133, of which THB 1,065 was committedto specific projects. At 31st May, these accounts held THB3,472, of which THB 3,191 is committed to specific projectsand will be disbursed in coming months. The level of funds inthese accounts can vary greatly from year to year and monthto month depending upon receipt of, say, Matching Grantmonies, which tend to come in and go out in large lumps.Of the THB 3,191 committed, THB 1,296 is for a MatchingGrant, and another THB 1,068 is for water projects underway.Only THB 91 remains in the Charity account unallocated forany specific, approved projects. Any remaining uncommittedfunds at 30th June will be handed over to next year’s Board foradditional/new charity projects. As at 31st May there were no overdue amounts owing to the club.We would like to express our thanks to our house bank, SiamCity Bank, for their service and their fee concessions.A summary of the Club’s Operating Fund results for the year (11 months actual plus June estimate) shows (THB 000’s):ITEM/YEAR (THB 000’S) 2009/10 ACTUAL 2010/11 BUDGET 2010/11 ESTIMATEINCOME TOTAL TOTAL TOTALMembership Fees 1,200 1,257 1,193South Wind/Publications 34 35 39Other 12 1,246 3 1,295 28 1,260EXPENSESRI/District Dues 382 389 350Salary 624 644 644Communications 6 66 60Other 225 1,237 192 1,291 196 1,250NET + 9 + 4 + 10YEAR END CASH 83 87 9322 Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011

This incurs a small yearly fee.A Nascent DatabaseThe club has been using redundant Rotary Internationalsoftware to keep track of member details and attendance forsome time, and there is always a danger this is lost due tothe program malfunctioning. Improved database software hasbeen tested which is customizable to the club’s needs and thisis being implemented. This incurs a one-off cost.Contacting the ClubKhun Prakai’s email address is now info@rotarybangkoksouth.org. All board members can now be contacted at emailaddresses relating to their designation, e.g. president@rotarybangkoksouth.org, etc. These addresses forward on tothe recipient’s preferred personal address and will remain thesame whoever holds the position, with only the forwardingaddress needing to be changed. The address is available onthe board members page of the website.Contacting the MembersThe club email system has been updated and is very easy touse as it comes along with clear instructions. A database ofmember details is sent quarterly to ensure email addressesand phone numbers are up-to-date, and that all membersregularly receive club communications.Director’s CommentsI would like to thank all those involved with the communicationscommittee this year for their hard work, new ideas, andcommitment to their tasks. Each member of our smallcommittee has ensured they are fully involved in using theirexpertise to assist the club, with some members taking on thetask of learning new skills to ensure jobs are done well.I believe there is a good foundation for the committee to workon, with the rejuvenation of both the website and South Windpivotal to this. The creation of new databases and achievementof computer back-ups, areas many of our members may beunaware of, will stand the club in good stead for the future. It has been a pleasure to work with Gary White, NickPisalyaput, David Armstrong, Tim Cornwall, Dean Outerson,Jamie Cummiskey and fellow board members this year.Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011 25

ClEAn dRInkIngwATER FOR SChOOlSOne of the most pressing needs in rural areas ofThailand is that for clean drinking water, and thisis even more so in schools, where children areoften obliged to drink unfiltered or poorly treatedrain or tap water, or bring bottled water fromhome. The former affects their health and abilityto study; the latter stretches already tight ruralfamily budgets. To meet this need, since 1996 the Rotary Clubof Bangkok South has been installing cleandrinking water systems in rural schools underits Clean Drinking Water for Schools Program(CDWS). The first systems used ultra-violetlight technology, which proved expensive andmaintenance-intensive. Since 2001 we haveused the more economic and efficient reverseosmosis technology in a system specificallydesigned for our purposes by former Rtn AndriesGrabowsky and Lions Member Michael Chung. The systems are supplied and installed at costby Michael’s company, Asia Water EngineeringCo., Ltd.These Clean Drinking Water projects havebecome Bangkok South’s signature program.Dozens of our club members have becomeinvolved in them in diverse ways:• Helping with the mechanics, theirorganization and installation;• Securing sponsors;• Funding systems themselves at schoolsin provinces where they have personalconnections; and• Attending project inaugurations. The total number of systems installed now standsat 403, in nearly 40 provinces across the country. When those in the pipeline are completed, we32 Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011

will total 444, and could well pass 500 in thecoming year, when we celebrate our Club’s 50thanniversary. Via these projects, we have providedclean drinking water for nearly 150,000 children.During this past Rotary year we have installed orhave underway 93 systems. Funding has comefrom our own fund-raising events, from sponsorsand from Rotary International matching grants. Each project includes a shed to house the system(paid for by the local community), the machineitself (each suitable for up to 400 children) anda maintenance fund handed to the local RotaryClub sufficient for 4 to 5 years. Maintenance andsustainability of the projects is vital and has beenan ongoing concern of those involved. In the pastyear a survey of participating clubs revealed that90% of the systems are still producing clean, drinkable water – and the other 10% included acouple of clubs that did not answer!Sponsorship, both corporate and personal, isalso a key element of this program, with manysponsors returning year after year. The AustralianEmbassy did another four this past year underits Direct Aid Program, and now has 16 under itsbelt. Rtn Prasert Mangkornkarn very generouslydid another five himself, and our good friendsDrs Peter and Ulrike Minderjahn from Germanydid another two, as did Dennis Kramer. Newsponsors this year included Blackmores Ltd(two systems), Digital Alchemy and Asia OilfieldEquipment Supplies. Those are just a few. Itis not possible to name them all here, but wemention and thank each and every one in a latersection of this book.Clean Drinking Water for Schools is a programthat provides a basic human need and has animmediate impact on the lives of the childrenand the villages in which they live. The RotaryClub of Bangkok South is proud to be involvedin this vital initiative. The Water Team: Volker Betsch, WolfgangMinderjahn, Gary White, Marco Casanova.Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011 33

lIBRARYkITSOne of the programs we provide to improvethe lives and opportunities of children in thecommunities we serve is our Library FellowshipProgram. This provides kits of library books toneedy rural schools.A library kit consists of over 120 Thai languagetexts, selected by Chulalongkorn University’sSasin Graduate Institute, for students in PrimaryGrades 1 to 6 (ages 6-12). The books areprovided to us via the university’s Book Centreat a discount, so we get more books than thenominal cost of THB 12,000 per kit wouldindicate. This year, Rotarian Boaz Zippor organized anart exhibition at the Rembrandt Hotel, entitledArt for Books, whereby selected artists donatedtheir works for sale for charity, and the price foreach art work included the cost of one LibraryKit. Ten works were sold to generous sponsors. In all, we had a total of 20 kits sponsored thisyear, which were provided to schools in 11provinces.36 Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011

COSMOSFOR ChARITYFor the fourth year in a row, and for the fifthyear in total, Rotarian Vinai Phuttinin and hisstaff from Cosmos have supported our weeklyraffle. Each week, without fail, Rtn Vinai bringsalong one member of his staff to collect thetickets and Baht 100 entry fee, and provides acommemorative coin or banknote along with abottle of something nice as the prize. This activity raises on average over THB 6,000per week from the generosity of members, visitors and guests attending our Fridayluncheon meetings. That adds up to THB 250-300,000 each and every year. Indeed, for the full5 years that Cosmos has been sponsoring theweekly raffle, it has helped raise almost THB 1.5million for our charity projects. In the 10 yearswe have been conducting raffles, the total takeis over THB 3.1 million.Members of Bangkok South can often be foundin Cosmos after each Friday meeting, debatingthe finer points of the day’s program, or simplycatching up with friends. FEllOwShIPThe main objective of Rotary Clubs around the worldis charity, but a very important aspect of Rotary isalso fellowship. The Rotary Club of Bangkok Southemphasizes both of these aspects of our organization. This year, our fellowship events were not only designedto provide memorable and fun times for the members, butwere also in the spirit of highly athletic competition. With such events as “bowling night”, “bar Olympics” and“charity poker” it cannot be denied that our members werefine-tuning their bodies in addition to enjoying fellowship. This year Rtn Dean Outerson won the title for bowling, theteam of Rtn Tim Cornwall and Rtn Tyrone Jenkins took thetitle for the bar Olympics, and Nathan Christoff won thecharity poker event. With Rtn Michael Doyle as the Administration Committeechair, we were able to ensure that our charity poker nightnot only raised money for Father Giovanni Contarin’sCamillian Foundation, but that it was completely compliantwith Thai law because there was no money gambled. Allmoney went to Father Giovanni’s foundation and the onlything we were playing for was our pride. Meetings last one hour and so finish promptly at 13.30.The meeting opens with the introduction of visitingRotarians and guests, along with announcements ofbirthdays and wedding anniversaries (so members canremember both!). It then proceeds to announcementsconcerning upcoming events, projects, notices and thelike, and an irregular but keenly anticipated section called“Rotary Information”, usually delivered by our indefatigablePast District Governor Praphan Hutasingh. Then comes the highlight of each meeting – a guest speakeror themed program. These are planned by the ProgramCommittee, this year headed up by Rtn Dana Caron, whichmeets monthly (also over lunch) to identify speakers, planthe following weeks’ programs, review recent speakers –and consume liberal amounts of very good food and wine! The Committee aims to have an interesting, entertaining andvaried program catering to most, if not all, tastes over thefull year. This ranges from the serious, with talks on politicaland economic issues, through the topical (experiences inthe red demonstrations last year, the history of The Pillwhen it turned 50), to the arcane, mundane and eveninsane, it seems, at times. Speakers come from an equallywide spectrum, from Ambassadors (this year we have hadAmbassadors from Argentina, India, Spain and the UK)through senior business people and commentators, toour own members talking about such things as “Cricket inThailand” and “Ice Hockey in Bangkok”.And some Fridays are just plain crazy – like our Bad Tie Day thisyear and an infamous “Knobbly Knees” day some years ago!Photos of some of our speakers this year are shown onthis page.Rotary Club of Bangkok South Yearbook 2011 45
