MIDDLE HIGHLIGHTS CONT’DACS MESSENGERAbbotsford Chrisan School looking to the sun for energyFive grade 8 students, Katrina Adams, Samantha Cruse, Daniel Groot, Justin Karding and Julia Throness began theirculminating grade 8 “Here I Stand” projects a little earlier than most by participating in an application process to see AbbotsfordChristian School install a photovoltaic system. The students involved have demonstrated a passion for “GreenTechnology,” and they became actively involved in the application by researching photovoltaic systems, how ACS couldbenefit from photovoltaics, and what the potential positive impact on our community could be.Photovoltaics involve the use of a solar panel that converts solar energy into electrical energy. The application is for agrant from SolarBC under an initiative called Solar Schools, of up to $20,000 for the purchase of roof mounted panels andthe associated inverter and electrical work. If installed, the system would reduce the school’s energy consumption bygenerating electricity during the peak day-light hours. The students each tackled one aspect of the grant application; from how our school would become champions for photovoltaicsin the greater Abbotsford community, to where the best location for the solar panels on the school roof would be.The school will be notified by the end of February 2011 if we have been awarded the grant. Look for further updates infuture editions of the Messenger. By Tym Berger - PrincipalL-R: Kate Adams, Julia Throness, Samantha Cruse, Mr. Berger, and DanielGroot . Justin Karding was absent.Page 7

ACS MESSENGERThe following article, written by Wendy Weaver - Grade 2 Teacher. As the article states, the theme at theelementary school this year is “Filling Buckets”, and refers to intentionally encouraging and building upeach other. In addition, the technical skills developed in creating the project continue to enhance thelearning community at the school.Filling Buckets FilmFesval AwardsPerhaps you have heard of theCannes Film Festival, or the SundanceFilm Festival, but you reallyneed to hear about the AbbotsfordChristian School Filling BucketsFilm Festival, featured this year inearly November. Each class was assigned the taskof writing, filming and editing a video telling the storyof how we can fill each other’s buckets, using thefruits of the Spirit as our guideline. Filling buckets isthe theme at the elementary school for this year. What’s filling a bucket, you may ask? Wellthat brings me to our first award; Best Visual Demonstrationof filling buckets goes to 5C. Each actor hada cup attached to their heads, and then when the heroesof the film performed a positive deed, the cupwas filled with a note. When the antagonist performedan evil deed, the cup was emptied. This filmalso won the best ending award, with Mr. Thiessenhaving a cup of water poured on his head.Patience was a theme used in several videos.Grade 1B won the Best Musical award, with turtle andhares singing their wonderful performance of “Be Patient”.The Best Actor award went to Isaac Bedwell of1C, who played the role of an angry, selfish king. Theclass told a wonderful story of the Quiltmaker’s Gift, portraying the truly generous spirit of the quiltmaker.Grade 1A won the best spinoff of a Broadway musical, called WestSlide Story, where the charactersfought a messy conflict about who should slide on theslides at recess. A resolution of the conflict brought awonderful happy ending.Best Special Effects went to 2C, who captivatedthe audience with a nail-biting shark scene, asit-on-the-edge-of-your-pew church scene, anddemonstrations of faithfulness throughout. Grade 2Bwon the Cleanest, Most Patient Bathroom Scene ever, filmed in the girl’s washroom. They showed ushow we can be patient in even the most stressful situations.Grade 2A won the Best Musical Video award, using the song “Blessed be the name of the Lord” toillustrate the joy we can all experience filling buckets. The mesmerizing scene of waiting for thewheat to grow, won grade 3B the Best Movie for theFood Network award. Clever use of baking breadand nutrition curriculum launched this class into aWhy we doWhat we dotop notch Iron Chef episode. Best Original Screenplaywent to Grade 3C for its riveting performanceof examples how we can fill each other’s buckets allthrough the day. 3A used a more dramatic approach, depicting anger and rage, turning into cooperationand love, through expressive music andamazing cinematography.Best Choreography was the award won by4B. Their rendition of “There’s a hole in my bucket”was alone worth attending the festival. Get theDVD—you’ll love it. 4A told the poignant story ofMr. Bakker’s bucket being emptied and then revivedto its overflowing state through wonderfulclass behaviour. The AOK award goes to 4C forcoining the phrase, Acts of Kindness—AOK. Theiruse of the projector showing backgrounds for theirnews story was a stroke of cleverness, as was themicrophone held by journalist, Jared Vanderveen.5A won the Best Performance that shouldbe on Broadway, with their portrayal of a classshowing us self-control through song and movinglyrics (I’ll brush my teeth…). I’ve already mentionedhow 5C won the best cinematography to demonstratefilling buckets. Last, but not least, the awardfor the Most Retro Video goes to the class of 5Bwith the grooviest of films, portraying the 60’speace that so many of us can only think of nostalgically. This project was an opportunity to use creativity,as well as learning some new technology, todemonstrate a variety of ways that we can buildeach other up and demonstrate the fruits of theSpirit. There was a great deal of excitement amongthe students as they had opportunity to explore in anew way.You can get your copy of the Filling BucketFilm Festival at the elementary campus. A donationwould be appreciated. On behalf of your FilmFestival committee, Amanda Vandenberg(producer, Best female actor in the role of Lily), BrianneKlassen (best director: The Quiltmaker), SarahJane Broersma (best narrating voice of all time)and Wendy Weaver, wannabe movie critic.Page 10
