3#3 Sightline with existing towers#1 ExistingSimplified survey drawing of theexisting arrangement showing (inred) the current main stage areawith its centre line and the centreline of the auditorium as defined bythe (off centre) aisle#2Aligning stage and auditoriumThis drawing, based as above on a possiblepreferred layout by the design team showsthe impact of aligning the centre line of thenew stage (in red) with the centre line of thenew auditorium. This is not feasible without substantialexcavation of the existing cliff on stage left/house right and this may be considered aradical (and expensive) action and a lowerpriority than others within the overall levelof the expenditure likely.Development of the above now with lightingtowers (in red) in the downstage corners (inthe position used by WA Ballet) and theeffect on sightlines of the extreme seats. This reconfirms the view that the extremesightline from the new seats on houseleft/stage right are obstructed by thelighting tower to a more significant extentthan on stage left. However, the horizontal sightline is alsoaffected by the position of the side maskingwhich is explored later in drawing #6.#4 Moving the downstage towers outFurther development to explore the impacton the sightlines of moving the downstagelighting towers out from 19m to 23m. It canbe seen that there is no issue on stageleft/house right and arguably sufficientimprovement on stage right/house left. This option would require redesign of thelighting truss system but the adjustmentsare feasible but nevertheless should bediscussed with the WA Ballet beforeirrevocable decisions are takenThis option, with the assumption about thestage lighting towers (FOH towers cannot belocated until the seating settles but theyshould follow the splayed line of thoseshown here) restores the possibility that thestage could be slightly angled, not in orderto align centre lines but to improve the stageright sightline further. This is explored in thenext drawing.#5 As above with slight stage orientationThis takes the above version in #4, existingstage but with splayed lighting towersdownstage, and rotates the whole to movethe downstage right tower out of the houseleft sightline, this produces good resultswithout detriment to the stage left/houseright sightline. As before this is a matter for valuemanagement but it is the downstage portionof the stage and the towers which need tochange not the whole structure. (Notwithstanding earlier comments about publicaccess on stage and a crossover).#6 The sightline corridorThe WA Ballet has indicated that they mask the stage to anopening of 15m. At this width the parallel blue lines indicate thearea of the auditorium within this width and therefore enjoyingthe best sightlines. Effectively there are more seats within thiscorridor in the new seating arrangement than in the current. However, the angled blue lines indicate the view from theextreme seats, a position which deteriorates (as it currently does)the closer the extreme seats are to the stage. It should be noted that at His Majesty’s Theatre there are 38% ofseats outside the proscenium width in the stalls and 60% of seatsin the circle outside the proscenium width corridor. It may be that, if offstage public access can be addressed at theQuarry the WA Ballet might consider widening the downstageopening to address this matter.CDRAFT24/09/12QUARRY AMPHITHEATRE0 10 20 50 100QUARRY AMPHITHEATRE CONCEPT MASTERPLAN REPORTNOVEMBER 2012 REVISION BPG 77
