The on-call duty isshared with the <strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>University</strong> teachingfellows <strong>and</strong> the Portl<strong>and</strong> VAMC residents.Weekly Optometric SeminarEach week, the resident meets with thecontact lens faculty for a contact lens-relatedseminar. Journals are reviewed, interesting<strong>and</strong> difficult cases are discussed <strong>and</strong> there isa presentation on a contact lens-related topicby one of the attendees.Administration/Research TimeThe resident is scheduled up to one half dayeach week for administrative time. This timeis intended to be used for research, review ofcharts <strong>and</strong> independent study.


Clinical FacilitiesTherapeutic <strong>Contact</strong> Lens ClinicThe Therapeutic <strong>Contact</strong> Lens Clinic is atertiary referral center located in both the<strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>University</strong> Forest Grove <strong>and</strong> Portl<strong>and</strong>Vision Centers. The resident provides directpatient care in primarily medically-basedcontact lens fittings <strong>and</strong> management of theirregular cornea. In addition to acquiringspecialty contact lens fitting experience forkeratoconus, post-surgical <strong>and</strong> post-traumacorneas, aphakia, orthokeratolgy, presbyopia<strong>and</strong> high astigmatism, the resident is exposedto cutting edge lens designs <strong>and</strong> customproducts in the clinic.Forest Grove Family Vision CenterThe resident provides direct patient care <strong>and</strong>is also given the opportunity to participatein clinical mentoring of optometry studentinterns throughout the year. The patientpopulation consists mainly of universitystudents <strong>and</strong> patients from Forest Grove<strong>and</strong> the surrounding areas. This site offersexperience in fitting rigid <strong>and</strong> soft contactlenses for cosmesis as well as for astigmatism,presbyopia, high refractive error <strong>and</strong>keratoconus. Complications of contact lenswear are also managed routinely at this clinic.Portl<strong>and</strong> Veterans Affairs MedicalCenter (VAMC)At this unique site the resident spends onehalf day providing primary patient care<strong>and</strong> one half day staffing the contact lensclinic. Access is provided to the College'sin-house references including texts, journals,audio-visuals <strong>and</strong> computer-based resources.Residents are permitted to use the computerwork stations in the Student Computer Roomin Jefferson Hall <strong>and</strong> will receive audiovisualsupport in generating slides, videos,overheads, etc., for use in presentationsor papers being developed as part of theresidency experience. Access to the extensiveophthalmic library at Casey Eye Institute isalso available.Computer Access & EmailComputers with Internet access areavailable for use in the school <strong>and</strong> library at<strong>Pacific</strong> <strong>University</strong>.
