Academy premises
and teaching facilities
The premises of the Poznan Academy of Music are located in
Sw Marcin Street 87, in the centre of Poznan, close to the
A.Mickiewicz Square. The building consists of two parts. The old
building, the post-German Evangelical House taken over in 1945,
of the area of 2510 square metres, did not satisfy the needs of
the constantly growing institution. Therefore, in the 80s the decision
of extension was made, and the competition for the design
of a new building was announced. It was won by an architect
Jerzy Gurawski. The erection of the building from the south-west
side was commenced in 1994. The first part of the construction
was finished in 1997, and the Pope John Paul II consecrated the
new wing during his stay in Poznan. For the 80 th anniversary, in
2000, the whole building was opened and the area was increased
by 3450 square metres.
The new building is distinguished by its beautiful elevation, representative
frontage and modern architectonical shape which
refers to the old part. The readers of “Gazeta Wyborcza” voted it
the best building erected in Poznan in the last ten years. The
Academy gained numerous classrooms, representative rooms,
chamber and theatre hall, spacious canteen and a music shop
which offers instruments, accessories, electronic equipment,
books, schoolbooks, music magazines and music sheets.
The redecorated rooms of the old building house a wellequipped
library which has about 50 thousand music sheets and
about 20 thousand books and valuable documents. Students and
staff have access to the Listening Room, where they can get
acquainted with about 10 thousand recordings. There is also the
Recording Room with high quality digital equipment for recording
and professional documentation of the Academy’s concert activities.
Mastering the skills of modern composition techniques takes
place in the Computer Music Studio with the high-tech equipment
for the process of music creating and recording.
The Szczecin Branch of the Academy is housed in the restored
building in Grodzka and Kusnierska Streets. The area of 1837
square metres satisfies the needs of two faculties: Faculty of
Instruments – specialization in Instrumental Pedagogy and Faculty
of Choral Conducting, Music Education and Church Music.
Artistic and scholarly activities
The Academy of Music is actively engaged in various artistic
activities. To the Poznan music lovers, it offers the symphonic,
chamber, choral, composition and vocal evenings, as well as the
recitals – they take place either at the Academy or in the representative
concert halls in the city. Among those arising special
interests are many years long concert series such as: “Masterpieces
of Chamber Music”, “Mondays at the Academy”, “Teachers
and Students”, “Teachers and their choirs”, “Vocal Tuesdays”,
“On Blacks and Whites”, “Summer Townhall Concerts”. Also
opera performances organized by the Faculty of Singing and
Acting have always been well received, in the last years, the
students of the Faculty presented works of Cimarosa, Tchaikovsky,
Mozart, Poulenc, Puccini and others. A lot of people turn up
to listen to the concert series “From Students to Students” with
the Symphonic Orchestra of the Academy, organized in cooperation
with the Collegium of Rectors of the Poznan City and the A. Mickiewicz
University.
The Academy cooperates with the Poznan Philharmonic, the
“Castle” Cultural Centre, Polish Dance Theatre – Poznan Ballet
and the S. Moniuszko Grand Theatre. It participates in the concerts
of the International University Choir Festival “Universitats
Cantat”, the Festival of Contemporary Music “Poznan Music
Spring” and such annual cultural events of Poznan as: The Science
and Culture Days, Educational Offer for the Matriculation
Examinees, Scholar Books Fair.
The Academy organizes the following national music competitions
