This includes a comprehensive annualized budget. Please note: the Head ofSchool will not sign off on an application which has a large budget accompanied by thecomment that external funding will be sought. In some cases, the budget is large because theproject is part of an externally funded grant to the supervisor. In this case it is vital to spell outwhat questions are the intellectual property of the student and which were part of thesupervisor‟s grant.Time Line: include the period from the beginning of the research to submission of the thesis.ReferencesThis document must be in APA format (see APA publications manual). It should be no morethan 35 double spaced pages excluding references. Sections 4 to 8 above should take up alarger proportion of the document than sections 1 to 3. The candidacy document must be givento the Postgraduate Coordinator for distribution AT LEAST two weeks prior to the candidacypresentation. If this does not occur, the presentation will be rescheduled for a later date. Thedocument will be circulated to staff who are encouraged to provide feedback to the student andsupervisor on any issues of concern prior to the candidacy presentation.All staff and postgraduate students are invited to attend the candidacy presentations. Theseshould take no longer than an hour. Students are given approximately 30 minutes to presenttheir research rationale and methodology, followed by 30 minutes of question time. The aim ofthis presentation is to help the student towards a project that is achievable in the time andbudget, and that will have little difficulties at the examination stage.Requirements for Candidacy at the Faculty LevelFaculty candidacy is sought following approval of the project presented to the School ofPsychology and Speech Pathology at the candidacy meeting. The initial candidacy documentneeds to be reduced by about half to 10 page (+ references/ single spaced) for presentation atthe Faculty level. Details of the requirements by the Faculty and application forms are given atthe following website:http://research.curtin.edu.au/forms/Once submitted, the applications are reviewed at the next DGSC meeting. If concerns havebeen raised, supervisors and students may be asked to attend this meeting. If they are notpresent, then the School‟s PG Coordinator can defend the proposal.NOTE: there are very clear deadlines for the DGSC meeting agenda to close. Not getting yourapplication in on time may result in it being held over for another month.
