Enjoy! The Candy Bowl:A Story about ForgivenessSarah loved candy! Sarah would do almost anything to eat candy. It was sweet and funto eat. One Friday afternoon, Sarah’s father returned home carrying yummy, new, candytreats for Shabbat.“Sarah,” said her father, “these are special treats for Shabbat. I am going to keep themsafe on top of the refrigerator, and we will eat them tomorrow.”“Sarah,” said her father, “I must go out to buy some things for Shabbat. Your favoritebabysitter will be coming over to play.”(Knock, knock)“Oh that must be Shoshana!” The father opened the door to let her in and then left for hiserrands. While Sarah and Shoshana were in the playroom, Sarah found an excuse to leavethe room go to the kitchen.“Oh how I want candy!” said Sarah. “How am I going to get it? I can move a chair tostand on!” Sarah climbed up, reached on tiptoes, and just about had the bowl, when it felldown on the floor. When Sarah picked it up, she noticed that there was a crack in thebowl. She decided to place the bowl back up on the top of the refrigerator with thecracked side hidden. Sarah then returned to where the sitter was in the playroom.Parent input: At this pointing the story, I would ask you as parents to ask the childrenwhat they think could happen when the father returns home. After a few ideas have beensuggested, then continue the story.Father returned home, and, while putting food away, noticed a piece of plastic on thefloor. The father looked up, and wondered if it was from the candy dish. He took it offthe top of the refrigerator and realized that, yes, it was indeed from the bowl.“Sarah,” called the father, and Sarah came in the kitchen.“Were you in the candy bowl?” At this point Sarah got fidgety and tried to hide her guilt. The father could see she was troubled and asked again. Sarah burst out crying and toldthe whole story to her father.Parent input: At this point ask the children what special words should Sarah use?I’m sorry! Then ask them: What are ways I help you feel better when you’ve done something youshouldn’t?Give me a hugGive me a kissTell me it’s okThen: Ask your children how this story should end.The point of the story is to illustrate on their level of understanding that we sometimesmake the wrong decision, but by using “I’m sorry” (Selichot), it helps us to be forgivenand not feel so bad inside. On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are told to think about the things we have donethis year, such as making another person feel bad. Since Rosh Hashanah is the beginningof a new year, we tell ourselves to try harder during the next year to do the right thing andmake good choices. At this time let me wish you a very happy and healthy New Year.Joan JosephEducation Director

Page 6The Honey JarSocial ActionThe Hineini prayer – the Cantor’s meditation at the start of the Rosh Hashanah Musaf– starts: Hineini, he’ani mima’as . Here I am, poor in deeds.I’m writing this on a sticky, mid-September afternoon, but you’ll be receiving theHoney Jar after Rosh Hashanah, before Yom Kippur, when we all measure ourselvesagainst what we meant to do in the past year, resolve to try a little harder.“Poor in deeds”. Ohev Shalom did so many kindnesses in the past year. Peoplebrought challas and a Shabbat greeting to some special congregants, they broughtmeals and good wishes to our friends facing illness. They brought meals and goodwishes to people we’ve never met before facing poverty we can’t even imagine. Theyfilled the stage with food and diapers and baby formula at Yom Kippur, they filled carswith turkeys and stuffing and pies at Thanksgiving, and they filled tables with pencilsand pens and notebooks, so kids down the road could start the school year right. Theywelcomed families from down the road for bowling, and cookie baking, and crafts, anddrove down to help kids with homework and load them up with books to read. When you read this, it will be October, and all the funds for Life Center Dinners, andkosher Chesed meals, and the bowling party that’s such a treat for the families in theshelters, and Martin Luther King Day, and healthy snacks for the kids in CAADC’sAfter-School program – all that money needs to be raised again for this year.Ohev Shalom’s Social Action Brunch,co-chaired by Sherry Zigon and Edie McFall will be 10 AM Sunday, October 26 th .
