The son of Lord <strong>Siva</strong> killed the demon Sura Padma withHis Holy Spear (Vel) and brought relief and joy to the suffering celestialsand humans. Allegorically the Vel represents the Jnaana Shakti(Power of Wisdom) of the Lord and Sura Padma the demon of Egoand Ignorance within us. Lord Subrahmanya is hence considered tobe the lord of wisdom who dispels our ego and ignorance. The devoteesof Muruga (as Lord Subrahmanya is called in several parts of theworld) observe austerities such as fast and mouna vratham in the fivedays preceding <strong>Skanda</strong> <strong>Shashti</strong> as well as on that day.
