Charles Schwab CupSECTION INTRODUCTION1OverviewThe Charles Schwab Cup is a season-long,points-based competition launched in 2001 todetermine the Champions Tour’s leading player. Theprogram rewards both consistency and top-10finishes week-in and week-out at allofficial/Charles Schwab Cup events.Prize Money$2.1-million annuity to the top-five point earners at season’s end.Payouts1st$1 million2nd $500,0003rd $300,0004th $200,0005th $100,000Points DistributionPoints are awarded to the top-10 finishers and ties in all officialtournaments and are based on the money distribution for each tournament, withevery $1,000 earned being the equivalent of one Charles Schwab Cup point.Points are doubled at the Champions Tour’s five major championships and at theseason-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in October.Web SiteInformation and updates are available throughout the year onPGATOUR.com.2007 RecapThe 28th season of the ChampionsTour was many things, it was compellingcompetition characterized by veteranswinning. The dean of the ChampionsTour, World Golf Hall of Fame memberHale Irwin, started his season bynotching his 45th Champions Tourvictory. The season culminated with thevenerable Jim Thorpe making the mostof his 30th spot on the money list to getinto and later win the season-endingCharles Schwab Cup Championship. Inbetween there was an impressive list offirst time and multiple winners,remarkable rookies and notableperformances.It was also a season of LorenRoberts’ redemption after a near miss in2007 Charles Schwab Cup champion Loren Roberts2006.The 2006 Charles Schwab Cup came down to the final putt of the season,with Jay Haas being the beneficiary of an uncharacteristic 4 1/2-foot missedputt by Roberts, known as the “Boss of the Moss,” on the 72nd hole of theCharles Schwab Cup Championship. Haas’ 20-point victory margin was thenarrowest in the six-year history of the Charles Schwab Cup competition.This past season Roberts’ ever reliable putter didn’t desert him nor did hisconsistency throughout 2007.Before the battle even began, though, there was much anticipation at theat the start of the season for the scheduled debuts of rookies Mark O’Meara,Nick Price, Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer and John Cook. And thecompetition was as keen as ever, with 21 different winners in 29 events. In theend, however, it was the two most talked-about players from 2006 who made allthe headlines again in 2007.Haas dominated the start of the season, earning four wins from March toJune. He led the Charles Schwab Cup points race for 19 of 28 weeks overall, justas Roberts led in 2006 for 19 of 27 weeks. With Roberts’ eventual return to thetop by the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, it triggered feelings of déjà vu.Roberts worked his way to the top of the standings with three weeks leftin the season, earning double points for his win at the season’s final major—theConstellation Energy Senior Players Championship. That victory allowed him totake a 165-point lead as players headed to Sonoma.As the Charles Schwab Cup Championship began, only four players had anopportunity to claim the 2007 Charles Schwab Cup based on the points available(880) to the winner of the of the season’s finale. Besides Roberts and Haas, TomWatson and Brad Bryant were still mathematically eligible to win the trophy andits $1-million annuity. But the latter two needed to win to claim the Cup.Going into Sunday’s final round in Sonoma, Bryant appeared to have thebest shot. He was tied for second after three rounds and appeared poised to win.But he faltered, firing off four bogeys, one double bogey and a handful of birdiesto shoot a disappointing 1-over 73 and fall from a tie for second into a tie for10th place. Haas went the wrong direction as well, needing 73 strokes to getthrough his final round, which dropped him into a tie for 20th for the tournamentWatson was not a factor either, tying for 20th.Roberts started the final round tied for 18th and eventually improved to atie for 13th, nine strokes back of tournament champion Jim Thorpe.Despite not finishing in the top 10 (only players 10th or better earn pointseach week), Roberts had enough of a cushion to retain his lead in the race andcapture the trophy and earn a bit of redemption in the process.“For me to get up on the last hole (in 2006) and have a chance to do it andhave probably the best club in my bag fail me, obviously that’s something that Idealt with in the off-season and part of this year,” Roberts said. “It was verysatisfying to be able to come down and finish it off this year.”Roberts prevailed, thanks to his consistency. He not only won theConstellation Energy Senior Players Championship, but he also earned a win atThe Boeing Championship at Sandestin and led the Tour in Scoring Average,Putting Average and Scrambling. Remarkably he was among the top-fivefinishers 13 times in 23 tournament appearances. That means 56 percent of thetime he was one of the five best players for the week.“That’s what it all boils down to, playing for a million dollars on one day.That is what is so exciting about the Schwab Cup is that it’s such a year-longthing and invariably it comes down to this last week and it comes down to thelast day,” Roberts said.Roberts is the fifth different player and the seventh overall to hoist theCharles Schwab Cup, after Allen Doyle (2001), Hale Irwin (2002, 2004), TomWatson (2003, 2005) and Haas (2006).With players like O’Meara, Langer, Price and Cook making their presencefelt in 2007, plus Joey Sindelar, Hal Sutton, Tom Lehman, Fred Couples andCorey Pavin, to name a few, turning 50 this season and next season, the 52-yearoldRoberts is happy to see his name engraved on the trophy before theonslaught of younger talent arrives.“The competition is going to be looking tougher and tougher as theChampions Tour moves on with a lot of new guys that are coming on.
