Getting the Good Picture Buzz. There are many reasons that wetake pictures, but when it comes to theenjoyment of photography, what makes itworthwhile is what I like to call ‘The GoodPicture Buzz,’ says Paul Barker. It’s the feeling when you push the shutterand think, ‘That is a great shot. I can’t waitto show it to someone else’.Getting that feeling is within the graspof anyone with a camera. It only takes alittle coaching to move from taking basicsnapshots to well composed, technicallywell executed photographs. If you are looking to get more from yourcamera, be it the simplest compact orthe latest DSLR, a course taught by PaulBarker, professional photographer withalmost 25 years experience workingfor the national media, is a great way toimprove. From introductory to advanced levels, each course looks at the technical andartistic aspects of taking better photos.... and hopefully getting more of that goodpicture buzz.!Ask AndrinaOffice SolutionsSage 50VAT ReturnsCash FlowBank ReconciliationsBookkeepingCredit ControlTel: 07876 345422 SilsdenOffice Duties Email: andrina@askandrina.co.ukWeb: www.askandrina.co.ukTwitter: @askandrinaTo advertise call us on 01535 6422274Say you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!5

Ken Eastwood, Oxenhope residentand co-founder of FibreValley, thesocial enterprise campaigning forbetter broadband in the WorthValley, shares his recent experiences.BT have taken note of our campaigningand fibre broadband is now available in theupper Worth Valley, via cabinets servedfrom the exchange at Crossroads. We hadalways hoped that FibreValley would havesome influence and it seemed we now had.So after a little research we decidedto return to BT and they confirmed thatunlimited Infinity 2 (up to 76Mb/s) wasavailable. Our phone line connects toa telegraph pole just a few feet awayfrom the fibre cabinet at Muffin Cornerin Oxenhope, so we placed our orderexpecting to receive a fantastic service andeagerly awaited our installation date.Sadly, there was no knock on the dooron the scheduled date and a telephone callrevealed that there were technical issuesand inevitable delays. The following fewweeks involved numerous follow-up callsand our broadband service subsequentlywent off all together. A complaint waslodged, resulting in a commitment toaccelerate installation and to pick up thecost of mobile broadband in the interim. After three weeks with no service, wewere told Infinity 2 would not now beavailable because of “capacity issues” atthe local exchange. A downgraded servicewas offered that would not include anunlimited data allowance. With no resolution in sight we contactedBT Group CEO, Ian Livingston, sharing ourtale of woe. After a further three weekswe were informed that because our lineactually connected to a cabinet up onMarsh (about a mile away) there wasnothing that could be done. Requests to beconnected to the nearest cabinet fell ondeaf ears.To date we have had no technicalexplanation, other than that theunderground infrastructure was builtto provide telephony, sometimes doesstrange things and can’t always meet theneeds of broadband customers. We returned to TalkTalk and wereconnected to an unlimited fibre servicelast week. We’re now getting 12Mb/sdownload, which is a marked improvementover ADSL. The BT Openreach engineerwho installed the service observed, “It’sa shame you’re not connected to thatcabinet on the corner you know. You’d begetting 70Mb/s + if you were.” If only heknew! This article is reproduced on www.fibrevalley.net where you cancomment, share your own experience, speed test your broadband andpublish your results. Fibre Valley continues to campaign to bring highspeed broadband to ALL in the Worth Valley.Further work is underway in Stanbury and Oldfield. Rural Matters Best Laid Plans by Jonathan SharpI wrote in December’s Rural Mattersthat we were going to have a month’sbreak from calving cows. Well, it turnedout to be ten days; the last cow calvedon Christmas Eve, a fortnight over dueand the first of the new year was a weekearly. Mother Nature will always have thelast word!I also wrote previously about not beingpaid enough for our milk, and that Ibought my wife a fancy cow called Honey:You may well be wondering how I canafford such a special animal.I’d like to finish the story...Sally Babes (as Rudolf Salli isaffectionately known) was not my firstcow to reach the 100 ton milestone,Rudolf Trifolium (same sire) was in2011. When you have a cow reach 100tons you are presented with a cut glassbowl and get a write up in the HolsteinJournal. After Trifolium’s write up Ireceived a call from Brian Moorhousewho I bought my first Trifolium from and itturned out his first 100 ton cow was alsoa Trifolium (roughly translated from Latinmeans clover or three leaves) and havinglost his cows during foot and mouth hewondered if I would sell him one. Brian hasone of the best herds in the country soI was pleased to sell. To cut a long storyshort I sold him an in calf heifer, and tookthe money and bought Honey!Honey is doing well she is currently thehighest yielding heifer in the herd, she isalways first in the parlour in the morning;like Emma she’s a worker and just getson with it; if she had sleeves they wouldbe rolled up! Her daughter Honeymoonhas now been weaned and by the time youhave read this will have moved from thecalf house to the young stock building. How much is a cow worth? Wellthe picture (left) is of Emma and I onhoneymoon in Canada (romantic as ever)and that cow was worth over a milliondollars! She was latter grand championat the two biggest shows in the world (notthe most flattering photo), her name wasMissy. Last year I sold cows varying from£1400 to £2250 so I have a long way togo!I hope you’re enjoying my rural musings,it does seem to be having an impact, thepostman now calls me Honey!! Rescuedby Jo LongbottomYou are that gentle breath of airWhich, passing, fanned the dying ember into life,Hover’d, stayed,And lo a flame and then a furnace fired. It brought a warmth, a love, a light.A life brought out of darkness into bright.A soul brought into Morning out of night. To advertise call us on 01535 64222712Say you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!13

Vive Le Yorkshire!Photos: John Giles PA NewsIt’s not often you’ll hear the French andthe English singing each other’s praises. The age old rivalry between us ‘RoastBeefs’ and those ‘Frogs Legs’ goes backcenturies, but now it would seem we havefinally found something we can both agreeon: Yorkshire is brilliant! If you haven’t already heard the news, then I’d like to take this opportunity to tellyou (very proudly) that Yorkshire has beenchosen as the starting point and host oftwo stages of the Tour de France 2014.At a press conference to announcethe route of ‘Le Grand Depart’, ChristianPrudhomme (general director of theTDF) seemed genuinely blown awayby our beautiful county, and cited ourscenery and heritage as major reasonsfor the committee’s decision to chooseus over other strong contenders suchas Edinburgh and Florence. After TeamGB’s recent exceptional performances incycling, the organisers of Le Tour said theyTo advertise call us on 01535 64222714Welcome to Yorkshire Chief, Gary Verity, and TDF Director,Christian Prudhomme; a bromance made in Yorkshire!were keen to return to the UK ‘as soon aspossible’.While the race has been through Londonand across the South coast before, ithas never visited the North of England. It’s a phenomenal coup for Welcome toYorkshire, championed by Chief Exec GaryVerity.Up to 3 million people are expected toline the streets along the route of the race, which is the biggest annual sporting eventin the world, and over 3 billion viewers areexpected to watch it on television.Welcome to Yorkshire is calling this our‘opportunity to welcome the world’, andthat it will be a ‘wonderful advert for ourDetail of Stage 2TDF2014 route throughWorth & Aire Valleys,West Yorkshire.Map & photo courtesy ofwww.letour.frDOSSIER DE PRESSE / PRESS KITcounty’. “Things are changing, people are caring, world leaders arelistening.”Just like Make Poverty History in 2005,the recently launched IF campaign isexpected to be huge. Led by around100 organisations it aims to put an end toglobal hunger and is timed to put pressureon the world leaders meeting in NorthernIreland for the G8 summit in June.www.enoughfoodif.orgThe Fairtrade Foundation is to launch‘Make food Fair’ during the annualFairtrade Fortnight when events take placeacross the UKThese are just a couple of examples whichdemonstrate the call to action to stop theimmoral use of the world’s resources andexploitation of billions of people. We simply cannot ignore the fact thatdespite there being sufficient food in theworld to feed everyone, 2 million childrenstill die each year due to malnutrition.Thisis utterly unacceptable and preventableBut, there is good news, from local to global. On Friday 18th January,Yorkshire wasdeclared the first Fairtrade RegionThis means that at least 67% of thepopulation ofYorkshire livein a Fairtradeplace as definedby the FairtradeFoundation. Theall day launch eventbegan with a coffee morning at RiddingsHall Ilkley, which included a performance ofa specially-composed Fairtrade version ofthe Yorkshire anthem “On Ilkley Moor Baht’at”In Leeds, MPs Greg Mulholland andHilary Benn attended an afternoon schoolsevent at the Civic Hall, then the formaldeclaration was made in the eveningat a reception at the Mansion House inYork. Bruce Crowther the founding fatherof Fairtrade Towns and Adam Gardnerfrom the Fairtrade Foundation joinedcampaigners and supporters from acrossthe region including the Archbishop ofYork. The Lord Mayors of Bradford, Leedsand York also attended the events, alongwith representatives from The Co-operativeMembership, sponsoring the day.To quote Archbishop Dr John Sentamu, one of the speakers“We should all be very proudtoday that we can stand upand say Yorkshire is a beacon, lighting the way forward forthe rest of our nation, onissues of fair pay. When we see unfairness and suffering wehave a duty to step in and intervene withDr. John SentamuArchbishop of Yorklove, generosity and kindness. Not because itis the right thing to do, but because we havea moral obligation to do so. Fairtrade is notsimply about generosity, it is about justice.”.Yorkshire has a long association with thestruggle for workers’ rights and dignity, from Sir Titus Salt and the old textile millsof the West Riding, the famous anti-slaverycampaigning of Yorkshireman WilliamWilberforce, to the Rowntree family, leading by example the issue of tacklingpoverty. We could also add the preachingsand dedication of Patrick Bronte; they allstrove to improve the lives of workers andpromote equality. Fair trade is an extensionof that vision and ethos for the wider world. The Fair trade idea is not new, when theHaworth group started 10 years ago theconcept had already been around since1946 with the first formal “Fair Trade”shop opening in the USA in 1958.It was when Fairtrade Towns came alongin 2001 with a structure and direction thateveryone previously involved in trade justiceor who had environmental concerns, wasgiven a voice to actually ‘do’ something. It’s an initiative which has caught theimagination of the public and inspiredhundreds of thousands in 24 Countriesso far. We have become part of a Globalmovement which consists of Towns,Villages, Zones, Cities, Counties, Islandseven. Now, from Holmfirth to Hull andSheffield to Scarborough, Yorkshire is theworlds first Fairtrade Region.Closer to homeDuring Fairtrade Fortnight, our areawill be hosting a visit from PalestinianFairtrade olive farmers on 26th and 27thFebruary. Sales of Zaytoun olive oil, sundried tomatoes, dates etc are providinga desperately needed economic lifelinefor those farmers struggling to live in aconflict zone. Contact the chair of FairtradeBradford 07703 778261 if you would liketo know more about the plans. The Fairtrade Bradford zone groupswill be getting creative and making avariety of objects from sculptured trees toaltar cloths, all fabricated from Fairtradepackaging, the theme for this year. We’dlove to know if you are doing anythingyourselves or if you want to be involvedlocally, in your own workplace communitygroup etc.; we have supporting materialsand would be delighted to help you. There are exciting plans for the launchof Fairtrade Keighley and work is alreadyunderway to work with schools andbusinesses in the district, again, we appealto any supporters to contact us if you areinterested to know more or be on thesteering group. What you can do right nowHaworth has taken up the 90kg ricechallenge, this is the amount which afarmer in Malawi needs to sell at a fairprice to pay for one year’s education of achild, although primary education is free, only 30% can afford to go on to secondaryeducation. The country is one of thepoorest in the world but is very democratic, has a free press and a tradition ofpeace. For every 11 groups or schools inYorkshire taking up the 90kg challenge wewill have sold one tonne. You can pick up a bag of brown or whiterice for £2.99 kg from Sonias Smile,Oates and Wiles and Cobbles and Clayin Main Street or West Lane BaptistChurch, Haworth. So you see, it’s easy to be involved, positive actions today on your doorstepfeed into a massive and organised forcewith a clear intention. Top Tech Tips by Michelle Thompson of Cloud FreeITSkimming through the newspaper oneSunday last month, my attention washooked by a single, somewhat ambiguous, headline – ‘Is this the loneliestgeneration?’The Government is worried that lonelypeople suffer ill-health and thus cost thestate too much money, but do they meantots, teens, twenty-somethings, or those ofus that generally prefer to forget our age?The young ones are always plugged intotheir gadgets – seemingly texting aboutnothing in particular to the very peoplethey’re sat in the same room with, usingtheir ‘super-quick’ bionic thumbs. It doesn’tappear very sociable to me! Or healthy…Does the growth of ‘oneto many’ communications(e.g. posting status updatesto be read by anyone withwhom you have a connection)help keep loneliness at bay?Perhaps. Reading that one ofmy pals is currently sitting ona bus watching a man pick his nose maybe mildly amusing for about a nano-second,and may be a poor substitute for a bit ofgossip, ‘a good old moan’ or a giggle over acuppa or a meal out (or in) with friends, butit’s definitely better than no contact at all. When life takes us away from our roots, and we’re working all the hours our chosen‘creation deity’ throws our way, it’s boundto have an effect on our ability to maintainclose contact with our friends and relativesand this can have a negative impact oneveryone.People are living a lot longer than theirpredecessors. You may, like me, find youhave quite a lot of elderly relatives you’dlove to visit, but as no-one can change thenumber of hours in a day or days in a week,no matter how hard I try I can’t get roundto visit them all often enough. Now THATmakes ME sick…Apparently, one in three elderly peoplefeels lonely at least sometimes, with morethan half of retired people living alone and17% having contact with family, friendsand neighbours less than once a week! It’sbound to be worse at this time of year too, with ice and snow keeping some peoplestranded indoors for days or even weeksat a time. What strikes me as very sad indeed isthat, given the availability of communicationtechnologies, such as email, socialnetworking and internet telephony there’sstill an awful lot of very lonely people outthere. At CloudfreeIT, we’veseen an increasing numberof customers in recentyears, wanting help withtheir computer problemsor training in how to useSkype, Facebook and emailso they can stay in contactwith people, but they’re not the ones theGovernment is most worried about asthey’re already taking their own steps toavoid loneliness.‘Befriending’ schemes work well inreducing illness amongst the lonely, buttend to fall down due to limited suppliesof volunteers. If the Government’s DigitalStrategy to get more people online wasimplemented by befriending schemevolunteers, perhaps in the longer termmore people would feel less isolated.Do you know of anyone (old or young)who may be feeling lonely, and isn’t yet ableto access the internet? If they are ‘up forit’, helping them to get online could openthe way to them feeling much less lonely. Itcould improve their sense of well-being andeven their physical health may benefit too.50%OFFHalf Price carpet & upholstery cleaning• Single room 12’ x 12’ £60 £30• Lounge 12’ x 18’ £70 £35• Hall, Stairs and Landing £70 £35• 3 Piece Suite (from) £100£50Domestic & Commercial workPrices subject to sight of workTrained professional, fully insured, local operatorPhone lines open till 9pmMob: 0775 365 1224Eve: 01535 630 713Bay Video Productions was set up by Stanbury manJames Hutton in 2007 when he launched his firstDVD A History of Robin Hood’s Bay to a script by Bayman Norman Scholes.
