Page Four — December 9, 2012Saint Anthony Catholic ChurchScripture Reflections for theSECOND SUNDAYOF ADVENTLIVINGtheWORDSunday,December 9, 2012TODAY'S FOCUS:DRESSING UPFrom Baruch shouting out to Jerusalem to get readyfor her returning children, to John the Baptist callingall to prepare a highway for the Lord, to Paul prayingfor an increase of love and knowledge for his belovedPhilippians—a sense of occasion marks these readings, challenging us to respond to God’s call.• FIRST READINGJerusalem, God will show your splendor (Baruch 5:1-9).Jerusalem had been dressed in clothes used duringperiods of mourning. Now she would be clothed insplendor. She would wear the cloak of justice and shewould put a mitre on her head (most probably referringto the mitre of Aaron, the high priest, meaning that shewould be a holy, priestly city). The reading speaks of theextravagant preparations that God makes for therestoration of His people. Even now He is making thosesame preparations so that we can turn our hearts toHim during this Advent season.• SECOND READINGShow yourselves pure and blameless for the day of Christ(Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11).This was written shortly after St. Paul faced a period ofpersecution that taught him what was truly importantand what was not. This is why we see references to theDay of the Lord (for after almost dying, Paul was thinkingabout the end times). It is also why there is an affectionthat is almost extravagant. He wanted to say those trulyimportant things to the Philippians while there was stilltime. Paul prays that the members of this communitymight find those same insights: that they might discoverwhat is pure and blameless. This is a goal of Advent. Weseek the truth with all of our strength and purify ourhearts.• GOSPELAll flesh shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:1-6).The Gospel speaks of the role of John the Baptist. He callsupon his people to prepare the way for the Lord. Johnpreached that the fulfillment of God’s promises was athand. This meant that the people had to turn away fromtheir sins so that they might embrace the salvation thatGod was offering. John the Baptist also speaks to us aswell. We cannot hope to embrace the babe of Bethlehemif we do not turn away from our sins. Luke’s version ofthis scene is typical of his Gospel. He gives a list of thenames of those who held power during this period. Many scholars believe Luke did this to demonstrate tothe authorities of the Roman empire that Christiansrespected authority and were really good citizens (andthey therefore should not be persecuted for their faith).• REFLECTIONGetting “dressed up” does not seem to happen so muchthese days. No matter where you go, garb tends to becasual—funerals and weddings excepted (usually!).Jeans have replaced the suit, T‐shirts and crew necksstand in for the traditional shirt and tie, and sneakerssub for dress shoes. Gone are most occasions whengetting dressed up was de rigueur. These readings areas much a “dress up” call as a wake‐up call. Baruch callson Jerusalem to dress up, replacing her robe of mourningand misery and putting on the splendor of glory: thecloak of justice and the headgear of glory. Her childrenare returning from exile, “borne aloft in glory on royalthrones.” God will see to arranging the rest of Creation:mountains made low, gorges filled in, fragrant treesfilling the air with their scent. And John the Baptist iscalling on the children of Israel to dress up their innerselves by undergoing a baptism of repentance, receivingGod’s forgiveness of their sins, and thereby providingGod a highway into their hearts, a straight path with noobstacles impeding God’s entry in glory. Then, God willdress them with salvation and fullness of life. Paul’swords bring it home. Advent is a time to prepare for thegreat feast of God’s incarnate love. God, made visible inJesus Christ, a work in us since the day we were baptizedin Christ, continues to come today, bringing God’s workone step closer to completionMonday, Dec. 10thIs 35:1-10Lk 5:17-26Tuesday, Dec. 11thIs 40:1-11Mt 18:12-14READINGS FOR THE WEEKWednesday, Dec. 12thZec 2:14-17Lk 1:26-38Thursday, Dec. 13thIs 41:13-20Mt 11:11-15Friday, Dec. 14thIs 48:17-19Mt 11:16-19

I was ten weeks pregnant. The canisterwas right next to my head. I screamed and the nursecovered it. It changed my life forever. I could neverlook at children after that without crying.”PRAYERLord, send repentance and forgiveness to all who hadabortions. Hear their cries; fill them with new hope.2012 • 2013YEAR OF FAITHDIOCESE OF JOLIETCATECHISM CORNERLike our Blessed Mother at the Nativity (asrecorded in Matt. 1:18‐25 and Luke 2:1‐20),generations of men and women have acceptedChrist Jesus into their hearts and homes in thehistory of the Christian faith. This month,we celebrate our belief in and prepare forImmanuel, expressed so beautifully andprayerfully in the mysteries of the Rosary andin Christian music and art. We also call to mindthe religious sisters, brothers, and priests whohave made a home in their hearts where theWord Made Flesh constantly dwells, and whohave helped to increase the faith of countlessChristians through the centuries.December 9:“The Word became flesh so that thus wemight know God’s love: ‘In this the love of Godwas made manifest among us, that God sentHis only Son into the world, so that we mightlive through him.’ ‘For God so loved the worldthat He gave his only Son, that whoeverbelieves in Him should not perish but haveeternal life.’” (CCC, n. 258)DECEMBER PRAYER INTENTIONFor all liturgical ministers and musicians

One way our Churchcelebrates this time is with an Adventwreath.WHAT IS THE SHAPE OF THE WREATH?A circle. The circle is a symbol of eternity. A ring is a symbol for eternity. If you started running in a circle, would you ever find the end? Theanswer is never, you would keep going forever. The Bible teaches thatJesus came that we might have everlasting life, life that would never end.WHAT DO WE PLACE ON THE ADVENT WREATH? Candles. We light onenew candle each week during Advent. These candles have a specialmeaning. The first candle (lit last week) is called the “Candle ofPromise.” In the Old Testament, God promised that He wouldsend someone to lead His people from their troubles, and in the NewTestament, God promised Mary and Joseph that they would have a son.He would be named Jesus and He would save His people fromtheir sins.THIS WEEK WE LIGHT THE SECOND CANDLE, the "Candle ofLight.” God prepared a very special light to show the birthplaceof Jesus. Do you know what that light was? The star over thestable in Bethlehem. As you watch the second candle being lit, remember the "Candle of Light" and the star burning brightlyover the Bethlehem stable.Next Week: The Candle of Joy.St. Anthony Catholic ChurchIMPORTANTREP DATESPARISH ADVENTRECONCILIATIONSERVICEWednesday, December 19th7pm in the ChurchNO REP CLASSCHRISTMASBREAKSunday, December 23rdNO REP CLASSCHRISTMASBREAKSunday, December 30thREP CLASSESSTART AGAINSunday, January 6thHELP A NEEDY REP FAMILYWITH TUITIONWe are looking for generous parishioners to donate to theREP SCHOLARSHIP FUND for needy families.
