Chesterton, the largest town in PorterCounty, and located in Westchester Township,is a century old. In 1852 the WilliamThomas family platted the original downtownarea of 46 lots into a village whichthey named Calumet.Miss Frances Howe, descendant of JosephBailly, first white settler in these parts, gives the clue to the origin of Chesterton. In her book, "The Story of a French Homesteadin the Old Northwest," she describesit as "a small railroad community." Likethe neighboring town of Porter, it owed itsbeginnings to the coming of the railroad. The first railroad to enter WestchesterTownship was the Buffalo & Mississippi. Itwas built in 1849 and never ran any fartherthen Baillytown. Parts of it were builtfarther east by private contractors butwere never put to use.The Michigan Southern was the first railroadto come through Westchester Townshipand to reach Chicago. It was built in1852. Three days later came the MichiganCentral. These railroads meant the deathknell for such early settlements as CityWest, Coffee Creek, and Old Porter. In lateryears, as business activities centered hereon railroads in Porter and Chesterton,FurnessviIle, Crocker, Crisman, McCool,WoodviIle, Burdick, and other promisinghamlets declined in population and activity.Chesterton and Porter became large railroadshipping centers. When Gary wasfounded in 1907 their lustre was alsodimmed.City West, after its brief glory of almostbecoming another Chicago in 1837, settleddown to becoming a thriving village andstagecoach stop on the Detroit-Chicagoroad. Residents of the county were usingCity West as a resort in 1876.Chesterton vvas the only railroad stationin Porter county between Michigan Cityand Chicago until 1872. Henry HagemanThe Story of Chestertonby Louis A. Menkein that year platted a village named afterhimself, which is now a part of the town ofPorter. Hageman became an important railwaycenter soon after the brickyards wereestablished. At one time, the MichiganCentral ran 24 trains a day through thetown. The Michigan and Southern Railwaybrought section hands to Chesterton. Theywere of Irish descent and the railroad assistedin building a church for them on thenorth side. It was St. Patrick's in 1857. Fewdescendants of the original Irish remain inthe Chesterton of today.RAILROAD PARKRailroad park in down town Chestertonis the former wood yard of the Michiganand Southern Ry. Farmers brought in thefuel to be used on the old wood-burninglocomotives. The piles of four-foot woodextended over a larger area than the parkhas now. The Thomas family gave the landfor the wood yard and depot as an inducementfor the railroad to have a station here.In 1879 the tract ceased to be used as astorage place for wood. For many years thetown of Chesterton has leased it as a park, and it used to be the scene for major communityevents.COFFEE CREEKThe first post office in Porter County wasestablished at Coffee Creek, east of MorganPark in 1833. Jesse Morgan, the Patriarchof the Morgan clan, came here that yearand remained postmaster till 1853. He hada stagehouse on the old Chicago road thatran through his farm. After Calumet was platted, the nameCoffee Creek was still used for the village."Coffee Creek (Calumet village) is a postvillage of Porter County on the MichiganSouthern and Northern Indiana railwaywith population of 500." (Indiana StateGazetteer and Business Directory, 186263).

FIRST SCHOOLAlexis Pravonzy, Chesterton's only earlyRussian, taught school at Coffee Creek forone term in 1833-34. It seems he also soldwhiskey to the Indians. He disposed of 11barrels of the firewater one winter and onlyone Indian lost his life. The Russian himselfeventually met his death from stabbingwith a cheese knife. In early years Calumet or Coffee Creekwas known as the Forest City. It is saidthat a squirrel could hop from branch tobranch of trees between Calumet and Valparaiso, vithout alighting.PLANK ROADCalumet Road in Chesterton used to beknown as Valparaiso Street, and beforethat as the Plank road. Wood was plentifuland made handy road material. A plank orcorduroy road was built between Calumetand Valparaiso on to City West and wasused about seven years until it began towear out. It was never rebuilt because bythat time the railroads were becoming thechief means of transportation.MAU-ME-NASSMau-Me-Nass, a PottavlTattomie squaw, shows as the first owner on many landdeeds in Chesterton. She received the landfrom the government through a treaty. Itpassed on to her father, Pier Moran, ahalf-breed, and eventually to the Thomasfamily. The "mother" of Chesterton istherefore an Indian squaw.FIRST MERCHANTSParts of residences and old wooden buildingsare all that remain of old Calumet.Among them are Eschenbach's hotel, a hotelearly in its latter history, and the ThomasWiesemanns' Resale Stand where Dr.Hiram Green had a drug store. He was acivil war veteran and a prominent citizenof early Chesterton. Horace Pratt, blacksmithfrom Calumet, was the first merchantThe Story of Chestertonto advertise in a ne,vspaper, the PracticalObserver, Valparaiso, 1854.The M. Smith & Son building probablyis the oldest mercantile location in Chesterton. The Thomases had a store there after1850. Calkins Brothers followed in the1870's. They also ran the sawmill, cooperage, and a washing machine factory. TheTaylor Brothers were the subsequent proprietorsof the store until it was damagedby fire in 1888.In 1862-63, among Calumet's businessestablishments, were two saloons, hotel, twostores; also a doctor, station and expressagent, four carpenters, and blacksmith(Indiana Gazetteer and Directory). Earlymerchants were L. B. Osborn, Jay Pinney,D. Hopkins and Martin Young. In 1868 J. B.Lundberg came to to"vn as a cabinet makerand built up a prosperous furniture andundertaking business. He was a very influentialcitizen of Svvedish descent, thefirst licensed embalmer in the state, andpresident of the first town board after theincorporation of 1899.UNDERGROUND RAILROADSchuyler Colfax, Indiana statesman andvice-president under General Grant afterthe Civil War, gave a speech in Calumet in1854. The underground railroad had a stationin Porter County at the site of Soule'srestaurant on U. S. 20. Henry Hageman, anelder of the Methodist Episcopal church inCalumet, also hid runaway slaves at hishouse. The Negroes had hiding places in thesand hills before escaping to Detroit andCanada. The young men of the township whowent to the Civil War took the train atSalem Crossing, nov" Otis, to southern Indianamilitary camps. It is estimated that onein four of Calumet's sons who fought inthat war lie buried in southern fields. Over100 veterans are buried in Westchestertownship cemeteries.

THE BOOMChesterton has several neighborhoodswith local names such as Stringtown, Pinney'sPark and Morgan. The largest isknown as the Boom and represents theefforts of several early citizens who attemptedwith the aid of outside capital todevelop Chesterton and Porter. Chesterton'sgreatest growth in modern times occm'redin this area, which is west of FifthStreet and extends to the town limits on23rd Street. A few years ago there were nohouses on Ninth Street. Now the area isnearly filled to Fifteenth Street. The part oftown west will be filled as soon as sewagefacilities are installed.Arthur Bowser, who made The Tribuneone of the most prominent weeklies inIndiana in the 40 years he was editor, served a term as state senator. He hadalways as his special concern, the bringingof progress to Chestei'ton and Porter. Hecentered his efforts on the Boom. Hevisualized Porter, because of its location,as the future city of Westchester township. It is still an important railroad center andhas plenty of acreage for factory sites.Four additions were platted on the Boom, owned by the Porter Home Investment Co.They are still known as additions to theTown of Porter, though at the time they\vere laid out Porter was not incorporated. He interested Chicago capital in his planand the real estate company brought outexcursion trains to the Boom on week-ends.Factories were encouraged to settle on theBoom. Porter Avenue was to be the mainstreet of the new city. Mr. Bowser felt soconfident about the scheme that he built anew Tribune building on the avenue andpublished the Porter Tribune. The new city would most likely have beena fact but for the panic of 1893. One by one,the factories closed and left town. The sellingof lots stopped. The dream city was nomore. In the next decade the investmentThe Story of Chestertoncompany reorganized but the glow of thedream had faded. It is estimated that morethan a million dollars went into this developmentof the Boom.An attempt to promote Mineral Springsas a watering place or spa also failed. \Venow have a road named Mineral Springsand an eating place called The Spa as remindersof the project. A race track of thesame name, promoted by Chicago gamblers, also failed after Governor Tom Marshall ofIndiana called out the state militia in 1912to close it down.SECOND INCORPORATION IN 1899Chesterton, after the Boom, still remainedthe important business center inNorth Porter County. The' Tribune wasagain published down town. Agitation forincorporation was strong in the decade before1899. The area was becoming lawlessand unsafe for Chesterton's citizens. Thedunes were a haven for criminals from theChicago area. County peace officers werenot able to keep order. Fights were frequent.Chesterton had a celebrated gunfightin 1884 in a saloon where Flannery's is nowlocated. It took place between several localmerchants and a telegraph constructiongang. In 1892 the Wabash railroad workerscame to town one Saturday night andfought with townspeople in the down townarea, until J. B. Lundberg quelled the disturbancewhen he shouted: "Stop in thename of the law." But Chesterton neverhurried. It was not until May, 1899, that itwas incorporated. Mr. Lundberg waschosen as president of the new town board.Mindful of the failure of the 1869 town, the1899 planners were careful to take inenough territory for raising the necessarytaxes.Incorporation was a shot in the arm forChesterton. Sidewalks were laid. Roadswere improved. The disastrous fire of 1902put in ashes the business district from

Krieger's saloon, (now Towne Bar) on theeast side of Calumet south to what is nowEricson's Standard service. The businesshouses were 'vvooden and burned easily. Butnew brick buildings replaced them andbrought modernity and beauty to our businessdistrict. In 1911, The Tribune could boast thatincorporation had brought many modernimprovements to town; electricity; improvedroads and sidewalks; interurbantransportation to nearby cities and towns.Chesterton had two telephone exchanges:the Northwest Indiana in the Smith building;the Portage Home in the Johnsonbuilding. A sleet storm ruined the latter, mostly rural subscribers. The former wasfinally amalgamated with Indiana AssociatedTelephone in 1937.GARY IS BUILTThe city of Gary was established in 1907on the shores of Lake Michigan in LakeCounty, as an ideal place to make steel. Asearly as 1911, the Lake County Star saidthat Gary would soon rival Chesterton inpopulation and that our town would become-the main residential section of the new city. This may now not seem a startling predictionbut in 1911 it was news to many whowere accustomed to regard Chesterton asthe most important trade center betweenChicago and Michigan City. After WorIdWar I, Chesterton had a shortage of houses. This was nothing new. Almost every yearof the files of The Tribune shows a similarshortage. People have always wanted tolive in Chesterton. The Chesterton RuralLoan and Savings Association came intoexistence in 1920 to meet the housing shortage.Morgan Park began to fill up with newresidences. The water system was improved.Sewer systems were installed. The new highschool was built in 1922. A WPA sewercame in 1938, known as the 8th street sewer. The 1929 depression hit Chesterton as itdid other towns. Factories closed. TheThe Story of ChestertonChesterton State Bank was one of the fewbanks in Northern Indiana whose doorsnever closed. Warren R. Canright boughtThe Chesterton Tribune in 1928, and hashad it ever since.Calumet Road was paved and became partof new state road 49 which ended on thebeach of Lake Michigan three miles northin the new Indiana Dunes State Park.Broadway was paved and lengthened.Outside of town, highways 12 and 20were built to the north and U. S. 6 to thesouth. In 1921 the Chesterton library beganas a township project and branch of theGary library. The Wilbar Mfg. Co. came to Chestertonin 1930 and is still here, having survived afire in 1949.With the coming of WorId War II Chestertonwas helping win the war. Men andwomen in service put the town in nationalheadlines.New organizations were set up and becamevery popular. The Retail Merchants'Association, started in the 1930's, year byyear became more active. The Lions Clubstarted in 1933. A Chamber of Commercewhich was begun in the 1920's did not takehold. After WorId War II, Chesterton re-capturedsome of its old time prestige. Twodress factories, a plastic sign factory, severalmachine parts factories, new garagesand stores were established. The factorieshave a combined payroll of about 500.Since 1946, the number of rural routeshas been increased from two to three.House to house postal delivery was begunin 1948. Westchester township has grownto more than 6,000 population.Chesterton in 1960 may be the largestcommunity in Porter county if the presenttrend in increase continues. Chesterton'spopulation is now estimated at 3,500.Rppr1:ntcd from C.M.R.A. Cities and TransportationGrow Together!YOU CAN'T STOP PROGRESS. Since its birthin the prairie 100 years ag-o, Chesterton has movedforward with the intense will and vigor of itspeople. Yet the history of its development has aclose parallel in nearly every city across this vastnation--for each is served in its growth and itsprogress by the transportation of the times. Nowealth enters a city, none of its products leavefor their destination, and none of its citizens canslln ive in comfort for any time, without an efficientmode of transportation.THE STORY OF TRANSPORTATION in Americais as colorful and exciting as the history ofChesterton itself. New regions and great spaceshave seen the conquest of the venerable ConestogaWagon, the canal, and the railroad. Yet theadvent of trucking introduced the most rapidand far-reaching- industrial expansion Il1 America'slifetime. For trucking has carried lifelinesinto communities of every size, everywhereandevery day.CHESTERTON IS FORTUNATE that the servicesof this modern, flexible and unfailing transportationsystem have been available throughoutalmost half of its 100 years. The importance ofthis service is shown in the fact that every productentering or leaving the city is at some time handledby Motor Transport. As Chesterton continuesto grow, so will this service. The growth ofa city and its transportation are inseparable.WE BELIEVE that Chesterton's second 100 yearswill show even greater progress than the first. And we know that Motor Transport will be ofgreater service with every advance. You Can't Stop Progress!World's Largest Builders of Truck-TrailersFRUEHAUF TRAILER COMPANYDetroit 32, Michiqan[ 25]

This exciting Centennial Celebration in which we are now engagedis the successful climax to months of preparation and planning byliterally hundreds of your friends and neighbors. In our initial thoughts we established two primary aims for thisCentennial Celebration. First-this must be (I,n undertaking in which everysegment of ChesteTton paTticipates. A Centennial conducted by that samehandful of fine, civic minded people who spearhead every campaign andcivic venture could not be successful; the active participation of all thecitizens in our community, either in the planning and development or asspectators, was a prerequisite to a successful celebration.Second-the entire pTog1'wm must be entertaining. Entertainingnot only to the hundreds of thousands who have viewed the parade, theCrossroads of the Continent, and the rest but also to the several hundredfolks who have so enthusiastically participated in the operation of theCentennial. These goals have been attained and we only regret that it willbe many years before another Centennial occurs and Chesterton can againjoin together in isuch a pleasant undertaking. We wish to extend our warmest appreciation to the Divisionand Committee Chairmen, to the many Committee members amI membersof the Crossroads of the Continent cast and to Larry Wills of the John B.Rogers Company who have earned the appreciation of all Chestertonians fortheir outstanding contribution to this great Centennial.MILAN J. Two modern gals, Mary Wagner and Mrs. Carl Radiger, in front of one of theold Bailly fur storage buildings.AN OLD BAILLY BUILDINGThe modern history of Porter Countybegan in 1822 \-vith the settling on the LittleCalumet River about a mile west of Porterof Joseph Bailly, a Canadian fur trader.Bailly built a fur trading post there anddetermined to spend the rest of his daysin Porter County. Rememberances todayof Bailly are his old homestead, the BaillyCemetery, and the name Baillytown orBaileytown attached to an adjacent area. The homestead is situated across from theGary Goodfellow camp, formerly Baillyproperty.Bailly was licensed as an American furtrader by Governor Harrison in 1814, havingpreviously been held prisoner in Detroitas a British subject during the War of 1812.He was the head fur trader of the Calumetregion and was known from Quebec to New[ 68]Orleans, having a post at Baton Rouge. He built a considerable post in our countyon the north bank of the Little Calumetand at the confluence of the Sac Trail andthe Pottawattomie Trail. At his post wereeight to ten cabins, used for homestead, trading post, store, quarters for servants, guests, and Indians, and for warehouses.Bailly's post for the ten years up to theBlack Hawk war was the only stop exceptWhite Pigeon, Michigan, between FortDearborn and Detroit. Travelers, soldiers, government men, missionaries, and Indiansmade it a port of call. Bailly ran a sloop onLake Michigan to haul his goods and had adock at Miller, then called Bailly's Harbor. He planned to build a town there some daybecause of the excellent harbor but it nevermaterialized, nor did Baillytown, whichwas on his estate of over 2,000 acres; this

was platted but he died before it could bedeveloped. He had a hostelry for travelerslocated nearer the lake than the homestead. The first military road between Fort Dearbornand Detroit established in 1831 ranneal' his home.Mr. Bailly died in December, 1835. In thecourse of the years the homestead, throughlitigation and selling off, dwindled down toseveral hundred acres. The estate passed toFrances Howe, when her mother died in1891 at the age of 78. Frances never marOld Bailly Homestead Building[69 ]ried and until her death in San Franciscoin 1916 divided her time between living inBaillytown and traveling, especially inEurope. She remodeled the buildings on theestate so considerably that no building remainsentirely in its original state. Thehomestead she renovated in imitation of aFrench chateau. For many years Franceswas a familiar figure in Porter and Chesterton. She wrote several books, amongthem "The Story of a French Homesteadin the Old North\vest."
