“The function of prayer is not to influenceGod, but rather to change the nature of theone who prays.” ---Soren KierkegaardMy Doctorate of Ministry in Science and Theologyfinal project paper is entitled: “A Study of the Impactof Two Forms of Prayer Practices on Resilience.” Iam so grateful for all the people in our church andcommunity who participated in the prayer studies and faithfully supported me during this program! In the process of designing and writing up the results of this study, I learned much more about theimportance of prayer for resilience development. Resilience is basically defined as: the ability toovercome stress, adapt to change, and recover from adversity. The Bible is full of scriptures thatprescribe guidance for living a faithful, healthy and abundant life. “Pray without ceasing”(1Thess. 5:17) is a well-known scripture passage that inspires the inclusion of prayer into dailyliving. Yet many people are not aware that this guidance to pray is beneficial for more than one’sspiritual wellbeing. Prayer has many physical and emotional wellbeing benefits including theability to enhance resilience. The Mayo Clinic’s website page on “Resilience: Building Skills to Endure Hardship,” lists theprescription to pray daily as important for enhancing wellbeing and resilience, as well as othergenerally accepted health prescriptions such as a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercise. So how do we pray in a way that builds resilience? The answer is: often. How you pray isn’t asimportant as the fact that you pray often. Prayer as a way of being in touch with God increasesyour awareness of God’s presence. My prayer study showed that the contemplative way of prayer, called Centering Prayer, is a goodway to enhance resilience. To pray in this way involves simple silent “resting in God,” for 20minutes each day. This form of prayer showed the highest impact on enhancing resilience in mytwo prayer studies.Mahatma Gandhi would not be surprised by this. He believed that, "Prayer is the very soul andessence of religion, and therefore, prayer must be the very core of the life of all people.”Ruth Burrow agrees with Gandhi in her lovely book, Essence of Prayer. She said, “Prayer isessentially God's work. Our part is to give time, do our best to keep attention, surrender ourselvesas best we can. Then we can be sure that God works. Faith does not ask for signs, or tokens.”So trust in God that when you pray, you are heard; God is present in your joys and in yoursorrows and ready to give you “rest” enabling you to become more resilient.Jesus was calling us to pray when he said, “Come to me, all who are weary and heavy ladenand I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11: 28)——————————————————For more information on Building Resilience, see: The Mayo Clinic, “Resilience: Build Skills ToEndure Hardship,” www.mayoclinic.com/health/resilience/MH00078/NSECTIONGROUP=2)4The Function of PrayerPastor Cindy

From baptism to Sunday School andConfirmation, to Bel Melodia, Bel Canto,Canzonetta and Ringers-on-the-Green, toKoinonia, service projects, the InterFaithFood Pantry and RISE, the moments spentat the Presbyterian Church have literallydefined who I am both as a woman and achild of God. So when I got engaged, therewas absolutely no question where we wouldmake such a sacred promise to one another:the very same place where I grew up - ourchurch.www.pcmorristown.org/weddingsWhitehead/Moyle WeddingJim Kapinos PhotographyWhile I had always loved the chapelbecause of its warm and intimate setting and had even imagined walking down the center aisle one day, myconnection with the chapel grew after regularly attending the Sunday evening Contemporary WorshipService. Weekly, this service deepened my faith and the love of our church because I actually experiencedthe transformational power of God sitting in the candlelight space of the chapel. It was incredible thateven though I had attended church every week throughout my entire life, it was during my Sunday eveningsin the chapel that I was truly awakened to the deep and awesome power of God.With that said, making the decision to get married in the chapel last March is one that was representativenot only of the commitment I was making to my husband, but also OUR commitment as a couple vowing tobe rooted in faith together.— Lauren Whitehead Moyle14

Being married at the church… what can Isay? It was simply magical. We chose thechurch because it was beautiful, of course, and silly as it sounds – the location was spoton, but there was something else. A feelingyou get when you are inside. An elementthat can’t be described but was tangiblenonetheless. Perhaps it’s the 200+ yearhistory of the church, or the friendly congregationor the down-to-earth demeanor ofDr. Smazik or the genuine warmth behindCindy Alloway’s hugs. Probably it’s all thesethings. Standing inside the sanctuary, beforeGod and with my friends and family behindme, wishing me well during the most overwhelmingevent in my life up to that pointfilled me with a feeling of such reverence. The pre-wedding meetings with Dr. Smazikwere awesome. He calmed our fears, answered our questions and imparted advicethat I’ve used already in my 4 month oldmarriage.Without planning it or even intending to, wefound ourselves joining. We had a greatrelationship before we stumbled upon ThePresbyterian Church in Morristown, butrealized it was exactly what our relationshipwas missing. We would not have discoveredthat if it hadn’t been for the easygoing andwelcoming nature of the congregation. After the wedding, I asked the guests whattheir favorite part of the day was, and almostall of them said the ceremony. Of course itwas. The reception, while fun, was – let’s behonest – a party. When we started planning the wedding, wewanted something simple and elegant, yes,but we were more interested in creating thefoundation for a strong marriage. Thechurch was perfect. It fit our needs perfectly. It still does.— Nikki ProvenzanoProvenzano/Blanche WeddingKaren O’Donnell Photography15Light/Strom WeddingDave Kim PhotographyFiga/Cuestas WeddingRado Lesay Photography

Music HighlightsTuning things up…Looking back over the past ten months since my arrival at ThePresbyterian Church in Morristown, I cherish many fond memoriesthat I will carry with me for some time. The warmth and support ofso many people has made my transition an easy and pleasant one.As we look toward the future of the music ministry of our church, there are two new exciting developments:A new vocal ensemble for high school students will begin in September. The addition ofthis group will give us a comprehensive choral and handbell program for students in our church. While other incarnations of this choir have existed in the past, this choir will be a bit different inthat it is a group whose identity is not directly tied to our Ringers-on-the-Green program.Students in 9 th through 12 th grades are welcome to be in either ensemble, yet it will not be arequirement that students be in both ensembles (though we hope that MANY will be!!!). Thisvocal ensemble will rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings in conjunction with the new highschool youth group time. Ringers-on-the-Green will continue to rehearse on Sunday afternoons,as that seems to be the best time for that group to meet. Since the new vocal ensembleand the Ringers-on-the-Green will meet at very different times, it will provide a better schedulefor students to participate in both groups without being involved multiple evenings of the week .This vocal ensemble will sing regularly in worship services and will periodically presentconcerts, both at our church and in the community. The group will interface with Ringers-onthe-Greenregularly, but the details of this interaction will evolve over time. Again, this groupis open to all high school students who have an interest in singing! With the addition of this new ensemble, I would like to transition Cantate Omnes into a choir ofadult members who will sing on a regular basis. This group will continue to function without aregular weekly rehearsal, and will rehearse before the services in which they sing. Wecurrently have a very faithful regular group that is small in number but dedicated and gifted, butwe need more members! On Sunday, May 12 at the 9:15 a.m. service, we will have a ComeOne Come All opportunity to explore Cantate Omnes targeted at potential members. If youhave any interest in singing in a choral ensemble yet do not have the flexibility to rehearseweekly during the evening, Cantate Omnes is PERFECT for you. This group will be singing ona very regular basis in the fall and we want to have as many members as possible! Ourrehearsal that day will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the choir room at the Church on the Green. Please consider “trying us on for size” to see if Cantate Omnes is the right fit for you!Again, it is my joy to be at PCM, and I look forward to many more meaningful, exciting worshipand music experiences in the future!Blessings,Matt Webb, Director of Music18

Midweek Music with Julie RamseyerLittle PipesThe Bel Melodia and Bel Canto choirs are excited to help lead worshipon Youth Sunday which also happens to be Pentecost, this year.“Twelve Disciples in the Temple” uses the hymn tune, TOKYO, withwhole tone scales and percussion instruments to highlight the Pentecosttext written by Mary Nelson Keithahn. After the children introduce themelody in a variety of ways, the congregation will join in singing the lastverse. The Bel Canto choir is ringing Mozart’s “A Little Night Music”,while the Bel Melodia children accompany the congregation with the hymn, “Spirit”.As is our tradition, we end our Midweek season with a giant scavenger hunt (Wednesday,May 22) utilizing just about every square inch of the Parish House.Pipe SqueaksThe children of the Church School are learning the hymns to be sung on May 19, YouthSunday. “As the Wind Song”, one of our hymns, has a slightly unusual history. Most hymnsare written, words first, tune second. Swee Hong Lim, the composer from Singapore, wrote themelody and then sent it to Shirley Murray in New Zealand to write the words, a true multi culturalhymn. How perfect for Pentecost!OvertonesThe Tower Ringers and Singers lead worship on May 5 after a long day at Great Adventure,May 4. Hopefully, we won’t be sunburned. This choir will sing their first real spiritual—not ahymn—“I’m Going to Sing When the Spirit Says Sing”. The Ringers are playing “Come, O ThouTraveler Unknown” by Jason Krug set to the traditional Scottish tune, Chandler. We have somany 8 th graders this year that they will be playing their own selection, “I Will Arise and Go toJesus”. Cathy Mokelbust has arranged the hymn tune, “Restoration”, to honor Americanhandbell pioneer, Mary Kettelhut.Spirito is singing on Mother’s Day, May 12, and Youth Sunday, May 19. AlthoughTelemann’s “O Come Holy Spirit” is a unison anthem, it contains tricky runs for young voices. We finish the season with our annual dinner at a fancy restaurant. Please contact Julie Ramseyer,Director of Children’s Music, if youhave questions, at 973-538-1776or julie@diagonalservice.com.20

Congregational Health MinistryGluten FreeThe gluten-free diet is becoming an increasingly populartrend among American consumers. However, most peopleare not even sure what a gluten-free diet consists of, what thebenefits are, and what gluten even is.Gluten is a protein that is found in certain grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. The purpose of gluten is to give elasticity to dough, which helps it to rise and keep its shape, and adds a chewy textureto the product. Although gluten is found primarily in cereals andbreads, it is also found in less obvious foods such as soups, broths, sauces, and saladdressings in order to thicken the liquids. It is rare not to find gluten in any processed foodproduct. The primary reason for developing a gluten-free lifestyle is an illness called celiac disease. This occurs when people have an intolerance to gluten. Symptoms include chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and fatigue. An allergy to wheat can also result in symptoms such as hives, difficulty breathing, and digestive problems. The only treatment for celiac disease is a gluten-free diet; hence, many people adopt agluten-free lifestyle. With increasing numbers of people being diagnosed with celiacdisease and gluten intolerance, the gluten-free diet has become very popular. Aside frommedical reasons, people choose to adopt a gluten-free diet for a number of health benefits, such as weight loss, improving cholesterol levels, promoting digestive health and increasingenergy levels.By choosing gluten-free foods, you are eliminating countless unhealthy and processedfoods that contribute to health problems and weight gain. By eating gluten-free, you areconsuming mainly organic products and a lot of fruit and vegetables. These gluten-freefoods contain antioxidants and vitamins that help sustain the body and promote a healthy andactive lifestyle.Although a gluten-free diet proves to be beneficial with its multiple health benefits, it is notnecessarily the healthiest diet to follow. Many gluten-free products are just as bad for you asthe ones with gluten. Be cautious of what you put in your body and keep in mind that theless processed the food is, the better it is for you.Nancy Behrendt, Congregational Health Ministry—————————————————-Resource: Pegasus News30

At the March 21, 2013 Meeting of the Session— Session reviewed the designs for new signs to be placed in front of the Church and ParishHouse and diagrams for where the signs would be situated. After discussion and questionsof a representative of the design company, Session approved the budgeted expenditure ofabout $38,000 to proceed with the project. Signs will be installed sometime in July 2013. Session approved the following policy for the church for helping with Hurricane Sandyrecovery: The Presbyterian Church in Morristown will provide financial and on-site supportto people impacted by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The focus of the effort will be tosupport recovery of primary resident housing along the Jersey Shore. We will also considerother opportunities in support of first responder and non-profit organizations supporting theSandy relief effort. Financial support will be provided through gift cards to local buildingsupply stores and through grants approved by the Outreach Committee. On-site effort willbe provided during one day and up to one week trips. This effort is expected to providelong term support of the Sandy recovery effort. A day trip is planned for April 6 and weeklongtrips are anticipated for July to Point Pleasant and October to Forked River. During her report on parish concerns, Cindy noted the passing into Eternal Life of ArchieMcDougall at the age of 89. Archie was a lifelong member of the church, having beenbaptized at the South Street Church. He was a dedicated volunteer all his life. His memorialservice will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.Per capita contributions are the way each Presbyterian shares the expense ofthe Presbyterian Church (USA) system of government and keeps connected to the work ofthe wider church. Per capita contributions fund leadership training, essential publicationsand our denomination’s participation in global ecumenical efforts. In short, our per capitacontributions are the glue that holds us all together as Presbyterians. In 2013, the percapita contribution for each member of our congregation, including young adults who havebeen confirmed, is $32. When each member covers the cost of his or her own per capitacontribution, the money does not have to be taken from the PCM church operating budget, thus keeping more income focused on programs and mission. To determine your family’s per capita contribution, multiply the number of confirmed membersby $32. For example, if there are two confirmed members in your household, your per capitacontribution is $64; three members = $96, etc. Please make your check payable to PCMwith “per capita” written in the memo and return it to the church office at 65 South Street,Morristown. You may also place your contribution in the collection plate during a service. Thanks in advance for your support!Evangelism and Membership Committee31
