Cover StoryPage 7NDHS Light the Way CampaignOfficially Under Waynotre Dame High School’s latest capital campaign,Light the Way, is officially under way witha total goal of $7.85 million. Three areas are targetedin this particular campaign: facilities improvements, increasing endowment and ongoing technologyupgrades.Facilities Improvements:n The NDHS Library is presently limited by itsinability to expand its collection, offer small groupmeeting space, initiate video conferencing and remotelearning opportunities, and establish a central, temperature-controlledarchives area. Relocation of theadministration to the Holy Cross Center will free thenecessary space to address these library goals and alsoaccommodate additional classrooms. Cost: $1 million;fully funded and under constructionn A new school Aquatic Center is a high priority. The existing pool is too small to meet present competitionrequirements for swimming and water polo, haslittle spectator seating capacity and its age makes ongoingrepairs and maintenance a major concern. Cost:$1.5 million; raised to date: $900,000n The gymnasium renovation will add prominenceand focus to the gym, recognize school history andHoly Cross heritage, and establish a more comfortablepedestrian traffic flow for students and visitors. Thecurrent pool area will be developed into a larger, modernfitness area with new coaches offices. Cost: $2 million;raised to date: $1.7 millionIncreasing Endowmentfor ScholarshipsEnsuring that NDHS maintains its strong enrollmentis essential. While the school endowment and reservefunding have increased over the past decade, its present$6 million level produces only about $300,000annually for tuition assistance for deserving studentseven though NDHS awards more than $1.3 millioneach year.Increasing endowment is imperative as NDHS seeks tokeep the cost of its education affordable to middleand-lower-incomefamilies by providing more tuitionassistance in the years to come. Goal: $2 million;raised to date: $1.35 millionTechnologyTechnology is at the forefront of the academic programat NDHS and is at the epicenter for progress andcommunication in our world. ND must have thefinancial ability to continue to invest in ongoing technologyupgrades that ensure it will have the neededequipment, software, networking, website and staffingas it seeks to remain a technological leader in privatesecondary education. A technology endowment andreserve fund will assure this technology leadership.Goal: $500,000; raised to date: $100,000We are grateful to the Fritz B. Burns Foundation fortheir $1.4 million pledge to the campaign; to the HolyCross Brothers who have pledged $562,500 to increasethe Holy Cross Scholarship fund; and to theAhmanson Foundation who has awarded us a grant of$500,000 for library improvements. We now ask you, our alumni and friends of NotreDame, to help us reach our goal. Please consider adonation or pledge to this very important campaign. For further information, please go to our website,www.ndhs.org, Alumni/Advancement/Light the Wayand watch the video. Keepingin touch with Notre Dame and contributing toits legacy as alums are the key components ofthe seminar.Back on campus this past May to facilitate theseminar were Kristen Chin and Pilar Golden, both members of the Class of 2002 and formerASB officers. The two were anxious to returnto Notre Dame to share their experiences overthe past ten years and to reiterate how importantNotre Dame was to them in transitioninginto the next chapters of their lives.A significant value of a Notre Dame educationis the extended network of alumni, now some12,000 strong, and it was emphasized to theClass of ‘12 that they were about to becomepart of this energizing group. Said Chin, “Pilarand I recognize how privileged we are to have acommunity like Notre Dame in our lives. Wehope this class of graduating seniors will findopportunities to stay connected to this network.”Highlighted in the seminar was the idea thatperhaps a mentorship website could be establishedwhere an older alum’s knowledge andexperience could benefit a younger alum whomay be in the same field or in the same area ofthe country. With such a strong network ofalumni, this concept could become tremendouslyadvantageous.“We’re brothers and sisters,” noted Chin. “Ourcommon denominator is this school.” Stayconnected, they both urged, and take pride inthe community of which they are now a part.Kristen Chin ‘02 and Pilar Golden ‘02 sharetheir “wisdom” with the Class of ‘12 in May
