GLOSSARYOF TERMS*®DANIELSMANUFACTURINGCORPORATION®AAccessories — Mechanical devices suchas cable clamps added to connector shells, which are attachable to connectors tomake up the total connector assembly.Adapter (Adaptor) — An intermediatedevice to provide for attaching special accessoriesor to provide special mounting means.BBack-mounted — A connector mountedfrom the inside of a panel or box with itsmounting flange inside the equipment.Barrel — (1) Conductor Barrel — Thesection of the terminal splice or contact thataccommodates the stripped conductor.(2) Insulation Barrel — The section of theterminal splice or contact that accommodatesthe conductor insulation.Bayonet coupling, rotary — A quick couplingdevice for mating connectors utilizingpins on a connector and ramps on themating connector. Mating and unmating isaccomplished by rotating the coupling ring.Circumferential crimp — The type ofcrimp where the crimping dies completelysurround a barrel resulting in symmetricalindentations in the barrel.Closed entry — A contact or contactcavity design in the insert or body of theconnector which limits the size or positionof the mating contact or printed circuitboard to a predetermined dimension.Coaxial contact — A contact having twoconducting surfaces, a center contact anda coaxially placed sleeve.Color coding — A system of identificationof terminals and related devices.Conductor stop — A device on a termterminal, splice, contact or tool used toprevent excessive extension of theconductor barrel.Connector, electrical — A device, eithera plug or a receptacle, used to terminate orconnect the conductors of individual wiresor cables and provide a means to continuethe conductors to a mating connector orprinted circuit board.Contact — The conductive element in aconnector which makes actual contact, forthe purpose of transferring electrical energy.Contact retainer — A device either on thecontact or in the insert to retain the contactin an insert or body. (See section oninstalling/removal tools.)Contact retention — The axial load ineither direct on which a contact canwithstand without being dislodged from itsnormal position within an insert or body.Contact size — An assigned numberdenoting the size of the contact engagingend.Contact shoulder — The flanged portionof a contact which limits its travel into theinsert.Coupling ring — That portion of a plugwhich aids in the mating or unmating of aplug and receptacle and holds the plug tothe receptacle.Crimp — The physical compression(deformation) of a contact barrel around aconductor in order to make an electricalconnection.Crimping — A pressure method ofmechanically securing a terminal splice orcontact to a conductor.Crimping dies — Portion of the crimpingtool that shapes the crimp.BAYONET COUPLINGBin — Basic identification number. (Seeexplanation elsewhere in technical sectionof this catalogue.)Body, connector — The main portion of aconnector to which contacts and othercomponents are attached. This term is notused with connectors incorporating nonintegralshells in their construction.Boot — A form placed around the wireterminations of a multiple contact connectoras a protective housing or as acontainer for potting compound.Braid — Flexible conductor made of awoven or braided assembly of fine wires.Busing — The joining of two or morecircuits.Butting dies — Crimping dies so designedthat the nest and identer touch at the endof the crimping cycle. (Also called bottomingdies.)CCable clamp — A mechanical clampattached to the cable side of the connectorto support the cable or wire bundle, providestrain relief, and absorb vibration andshock otherwise transmitted by the cableto the contact/wire connection.Cable shielding clamp — A deviceconsisting of a sealing member and cablesupport designed to terminate the screen(shield) of an electrical cable.CONTACTContact area — The area in contactbetween two conductors, two contacts, ora conductor and a contact permitting theflow of electricity.Contact arrangement — The number, spacing and arrangement of contacts in aconnector.CONTACT ARRANGEMENTContact engaging and separating force— Force needed to either engage orseparate mating contacts.Contact resistance — Electricalresistance of a pair of engaged contacts.Resistance may be measured in ohms ormillivolt drop at a specified current over theengaged contacts.PAGE 83 *REFERENCE SOURCE MIL-STD-1646 AND 1353CRIMPING DIESCrimping tool — Mechanism used forcrimping.DDepth of crimp — The distance theindenter penetrates into the barrel.Die Closure — The gap between indenterdies at full handle closure. Usually definedby Go/No-Go dimensions.Dielectric — A material having electricalinsulating properties.EEnvironmentally sealed — A device thatis provided with gaskets, seals, grommets.potting or other means to keep out moisture, dirt air or dust which might reduce itsperformance. Does not include nonphysicalenvironments such as RF and radiation.Extraction tool — See removal tool.FFerrule — A short tube. Used to makeconnections to shielded or coaxial cables. Also used in connectors to reduce transmissionof torque to grommet.© COPYRIGHT 2003 DANIELS MANUFACTURING CORPORATION
