KEYPORT CENTRAL SCHOOLRED RAIDERS TIMESSPRING 2013HURRICANE SANDY CLEAN UPHurricane Sandy was the mostdevastating storm of the 2012hurricane season. As a category 3storm, Sandy created damage inmany states. New Jersey was oneof the most hard-struck. Uponpreparing for the storm, PresidentBarrack Obama signed anemergency declaration for NJallowing the state to requestfederal funding and otherassistance. Kenny Krohe, of the<strong>Keyport</strong> First Aid, wasdetermined to do all he could tohelp during and after the storm.Mr. Krohe help set up and managemany organizations like shelters,food drives, and clothesdonations.We got the opportunity to sitdown and ask some questions toMr. Krohe. He explained to usthat recovery efforts are a work inprogress, but the town is workinghard to rebuild. He informed usthe First Aid is no longerproviding long term shelters, butthere are places nearby thatdisplaced victims of this megaSTAR PROGRAMWe recently sat down anddiscussed the Star Program withCentral <strong>School</strong> teacher, Ms.DeNardo.Q. What is the Star program?A. It’s a program were students splitinto groups to focus on one subject forthe New Jersey Ask. The skills coveredare: responding to open endedquestions, writing, reading, how tocomplete multiple choice questions andstorm can seek shelter in. Weasked him whether or not <strong>Keyport</strong>was feeling any effects ontourism so far this year? He toldus it was too early to tell, but thetown can rely on governmentgrants and public owned assets forfunding. As to whether we will berestored for the summer of 2013,it is definite.As you may know, our belovedmuseum was demolished duringSandy. Many residents werewondering if it was going to berebuilt and if so, was there a plan?The answer Mr. Krohe explainedwas that the plan is beingdeveloped. Finally, we askedKrohe if he had anything to say tothe children and families of<strong>Keyport</strong>. He said, “Thank you forall your help and support duringand after the storm. Without you,we couldn’t have done so much”.If you were affected by Sandy,<strong>Keyport</strong> Central <strong>School</strong> hopes youare on the road to recovery!solving math problems.Q. PAGE 2RED RAIDERS TIMESWRITERS WORKSHOPWriter’s Workshop is aclass here at Central <strong>School</strong>that lets students learndifferent styles of writing. Itdiffers from a traditionallanguage arts class in thatyour writing is based on whatyou read. Ms.Mantino, thewriter’s workshop teacher for4th and 5th grade, says“writing is about creativeideas and different topics”.Writer’s workshopexplores different types ofstories. In the middle ofwriting or before the studentsamazing writing pieces areperfected Ms.Mantino modelsfor them and they love whenshe tells a little story.Modeling is when the classwrites independently basedon what the teacher puts onthe board. Independentwriting is their strongestability because they work attheir own pace. Make sureyou give it 100% becausethat’s what she expects.At the middle of the storyshe sits with a child and goesover what they need to workon. This is calledconferencing with yourstudents. When they revisethey check their own workthen check their partnerswork. Ms.Mantino’s helpfulhint was, to read backwardswhen revising papers. Whendone with all these steps theamazing stories are almostdone! T-ball isjust for 5-6 year olds, minors has7-9 year olds, intermediate has 9-10year olds and majors has 11-12 year olds.Q. How many coaches arethere? A. There is one headcoach for all teams with 14 boysand all softball teams with 8girls. Other coaches help out andthat varies by team.Q. TheParade started at St. Joseph’schurch and ended atFireman’s Park. It started at1:00 pm on Saturdayafternoon. There were manyparticipants such as our GrandMarshal, Harry Aumack,<strong>Keyport</strong> Fire Department,<strong>Keyport</strong> First Aid Squad andthe Cadets, <strong>Keyport</strong> OEMand CERT, Union Beach FireDepartment, <strong>Keyport</strong>Indians, Democratic Club,The Elks, Knights ofColumbus, The Masons,<strong>Keyport</strong> Historical Society,<strong>Keyport</strong> Kids, <strong>Keyport</strong>Central <strong>School</strong> Band and GirlScouts. There were also 5pipe bands marching. <strong>Keyport</strong>really did show they’re Irishpride!After the horrible mess thatHurricane Sandy caused thisreally brought the communitytogether. The day wasbeautiful and the weather wasperfect. I don’t think wecould’ve asked for a betterday. Even if you weren’tIrish, you could act as if youwere at the parade. The floatslooked amazing and everyoneenjoyed the parade. The bagpipers sounded great and sodid the bands. Beforecoaching the middle schoolsoftball team, she coached the<strong>Keyport</strong> High <strong>School</strong> varsityteam. Miss Minuskin is anexperienced softball player.She played while she was inhigh school and she reallyloves the sport.The 2013 softball season willcontinue until May 15 th . Theteam will be playing against<strong>Red</strong> Bank, Keansburg, AsburyPark, Henry Hudson, UnionBeach and Monmouth Beach.Miss Minuskin hopes the2013 KCS softball team willhave a successful season andthat everyone involved has agreat time. She likesschool because she gets to play alot. In the classroom, theynormally do workshops likereading writing and math. <strong>School</strong>is not hard for Angelie becauseshe thinks the specials andworkshops are easy.Mrs. Ferber & Ms. S’ ClassMadison Quinn and SophiaDesimas are both 6 years old.Their favorite special class is art.The like school because it is funand they also like the workshops.They things they normally do intheir class room is alsoworkshops like reading, writingmath and “blending letters”meaning putting letters togetherto make words. <strong>School</strong> is nothard for either of them becauseMrs. Ferber doesn’t make themdo hard stuff.Mrs. Romanetz, Mrs.Dinardi and Mrs. Martin’sClassMegan Hausmann is 6 years oldand her favorite special class is artand she likes school because theyget to do fun activities.
