No matter how good we are – we must never stop getting better
The unique way in which the Resopal brand was presented in the form of a book for the first
time in 2003 represented a breakthrough in the presentation of surface decors. Numerous largeformat
and full-page illustrations, instead of the small samples as previously used, showed off the
material and colour properties of the decors to advantage. The intention even then was to give the
reader a vivid impression of the “Sensuality of the Surface”, as the company itself described it, in
the new book entitled RESOPAL® >2008.
After referring to RESOPAL® >2008 as our standard collection we now, only five years later,
present RESOPAL® >2013, the latest book on laminate surfaces. RESOPAL® >2013 is already setting
new standards in 2008 and taking a stand for the design properties and perspectives of laminate.
I am convinced that there is no comparable surface in terms of design, functionality and freedom
of design. We have further refined our appreciation of material that has aged gracefully and
matured. We continuously strive to help laminate acquire the relevance it deserves. In future,
design will not only involve the development of decors. It will be manifested in deep, natural
and expressive structures that open up new dimensions for surface design.
Our new book verifies our ambition to offer you complete system solutions for meeting all your
challenges and to guarantee the necessary planning security until 2013 – whether you are an
architect, interior designer, specifier, cabinet maker, carpenter, artist, student or fan of Resopal,
whether you design facades, rooms, furniture, buildings, means of transportation or other projects.

What surfaces mean to people
The designers’ world has gone white. Although
white offers neither differentiation, nor
distinctive accents nor shades of individuality.
Human nature, however, is programmed for
being distinguishable from the mass, distinctive
and unique. Individual perceptions and
experiences are very significant for the design
of the world in which we live. They form part
of the mutual interaction between humans and
products, and let values actually be created.
The value of a product is always defined by the
human user.
Surfacing products depend on this humanproduct
relationship to a particular degree.
They acquire their sensuality through human
perception of their colours, textures and gloss
levels, their tectonic and haptic qualities.
A visual impression is always confirmed by
hands, fingertips and skin receptors.
The sound of the surfaces reinforces the
association. Surfaces undergo a metamorphosis,
transforming their two-dimensionality
into spatial experiences – through people who
differentiate and always act and think in three
dimensions.
Planners and designers, architects and
contractors are expected to gather people’s
diverse experiences, perceptions and needs
and based on this material to generate rooms
full of innovation and originality. Creative
ideas exist. But all too often, the professionals
miss the animating tools to implement them.
The new collection from Resopal offers
a broad repertoire of companions, initiators
and indicators that, similar to a recipe,
help to make successful compositions.
The RESOPAL® >2013 collection brings
together innovative products to which people
can relate. It connects with people, caters
to their personal expectations and ideas,
awakens positive interest and passions.

lines from RESOPAL®. The new is different.

not nature’s opponent. To the contrary, the

meaning are design’s natural friend.
That is what is so marvellous about the new
collection from Resopal. It takes the things
that motivate people seriously – friendship,
love, security and individuality. In the often so
objectified product world it enables a dialogue
of interpersonal values. Surfacings convey contents
with meaning. Touching the surfaces is
like a flirt which begins a close emotional relationship,
and it resembles a ritual. The design
ritual shifts the attention from the pure utility
value of the products to their expressivity
value. Hence, things become more valuable.
The new design lines cater to perceptions,
lifestyles and desires. Human desire is the
number-one instinct. The patterns in our
surrounding world stimulate and regulate
wants and desires, and pleasure.
The new collection from Resopal finds
solutions to the distinction between needs
and desires; it furnishes every contractor and
specifier, and all creative people with the tool
for ever-demanded discernibility and individuality.
It expresses the fact that Resopal
shows due respect for what people perceive
and feel, stresses the magical and offers the
mysterious and wonderful. That is the magic of
the room: experiencing surface decors in their
three-dimensional composition and interaction

In spite of theories which are often vague,
blurred and weak, the "re-enchantment" of the
room is more significant and more consoling
for designers and users than exact and precise
scientific theories.

THE BRAND – THE ORIGINAL
History and present
The history of Resopal is a model of
industrial history. The beginnings of the
company lie in marginal products of the
classical textile industry. New areas of
application arise with the arrival of new
branches of industry. The product of
insulating materials for the aspiring
electrical industry causes the company to
experiment with synthetic resins and this
research makes it advance to become a
pioneer in plastics technology.
The large-scale industrial production of
technical laminates for the electrical
industry leads in turn to the invention of
decorative laminates for the furniture
industry, in which the company finally
specializes and where even today it is still
in the forefront with the same pioneering
spirit.
In November 16, 1867 August Hermann
Römmler founds a company in Spremberg in the
Niederlausitz for recycling waste from cloth and
hat production. The production of cotton flocks
as a filler for gramophone record production
brings Römmler into contact with plastics at an
early stage. Up to 1905 Hermann Römmler
junior brings the production of electrotechnical
insulating material to maturity using
such plastics. The electrotechnical department
becomes independent and advances to become
the leading special factory for high-quality
insulating materials. With the development of
the pressure-heat process for hardenable plastics
Römmler soon becomes next to the Bakelite
company the pioneer in plastics technology.
In 1917 the company is converted into a
joint stock company with administrative headquarters
in Berlin. From 1919 onwards the
phenol formaldehyde condensation method
developed in the laboratory is used on a large
industrial scale for the production of synthetic
resins, mouldings and insulating boards.
In the 1920s the Römmler AD develops pressed
materials on the basis of formaldehyde resins
and secures with patents a leading position in
the long term in the field of aminoplastics.
In 1929 BBC acquires a holding in the
company and in 1930 it acquires the majority
shareholding before taking it over completely
in 1938.
In 1930 Römmler registers the RESOPAL®
patent and produces the first decorative boards:
The galley a Zeppelin is fitted out in red
RESOPAL®. In 1945 the production facilities,
in which finally 2500 persons are employed,
are completely dismantled by the Soviet
occupation forces.
In 1946 the company resumes production
as insulating materials department of BBC in
the old sugar mill on the present company site
in Groß-Umstadt. Resopal’s fortunes are restored
with the modern built-in kitchen and the kidney
table of 1950s.
In 1971 the product name, which in the
meantime has achieved a degree of familiarity
of 85 percent, also becomes the name of the
company.
In 1973 Resopal starts the large-scale
industrial production of postforming worktops
and becomes leading kitchen worktop
manufacturer in Germany.
In 1987 the Swiss Forbo AG acquires a
majority holing in the BBC subsidiary. As a
consequence the building division is expanded.
The RESOPLAN® facade board becomes a further
pillar of the company.
In 1998 the Resopal GmbH is acquired by
the worldwide operating American laminate
manufacturer Wilsonart International, which is
a part of the ITW-Company (Illinois Toll Works
Inc.). Wilsonart International currently employs
more than 4000 people in production plants,
sales companies and service centers throughout
the world.
Resopal – Patent No. 615 400
The Viennese chemists Dr. Pollak and
Dr. Ripper succeed in the 1920s with the
production of hardenable ureas. In 1926
Dr. Ripper joins the Römmler AG where he
develops the method and has it patented.
The company registers the Resopal patent on
December 19, 1930 and it is published on
July 6, 1935 with effect from the day of
registration. On the basis of the patented
method Römmler produces light-coloured
light-fast laminates and sells them under the
brand name of RESOPAL®. Constant further
developments of the resin, paper, printing,
surface and pressing technology lead to the
present-day modern product quality.
The versatility of the material also continues
to guarantee its future prospects.
With its Know-How Resopal remains the
pacesetter for innovative solutions.

NCS NATURAL COLOR SYSTEM®©
The professional colour design system
NCS®© – the colour system
There are many colour systems. They are a
necessary aid for working with colour. There
are colour collections for certain industries,
such as RAL for coloured paints in Germany,
there are innumerous collections from
different manufacturers, but there are
also colour systems describing the colour
space logically and systematically
independently of specific industry requirements
or fashion trends. Ideally there would
be a single defined and dimensioned colour
space to which all sample collections could
refer. Instead of this different colour
measuring methods and different colour
systems compete with one another. However a
system that has established itself worldwide is
the NCS Natural Color System®©.
Worldwide colour communication
The system developed in Sweden, which is
based on the “natural” human sensation of
colour, is used in the meantime throughout
Europe. In Sweden, Norway, Spain and
Southafrica the NCS®© is binding, in Denmark
and Switzerland practically standard. Whole
industries, such as the laminate industry,
throughout the world work with the system.
NCS®© is currently represented in Europe with
19 national sales offices and worldwide in the
USA, South Africa, Asia and Australia. The
advantages for the designers, architects, planners,
buyers, etc. are obvious. NCS®© is
online, it is not a solitary island solution. One
can communicate globally and across industrial
boundaries in a single colour language. One
can co-ordinate across industry and product
boundaries. One comes more quickly and economically
to one’s goal if one can rely on
colour samples or colour software instead of
having to apply a trial coat first of all.
Descriptive code
NCS®© defines 1950 sampled standard colours
in a logically structured colour space over a
40-part colour circle, which is based on the
four primary colours of yellow, red, blue and
green that are considered to be unmixed. The
40 hues are defined according to their optical
colour components on a scale of 100. Y20R is
accordingly a colour with 80 portions visually
of yellow and 20 portions visually of red. Each
hue is in turn lightened step by step to white
and darkened to black on a scale of 100.
Thus 2030-Y20R contains 20 blackness and
30 chromaticness portions. The remaining
50 portions are whiteness portions. Once one
has become a little more familiar with the
system, one can already form a rough idea of
the colour from the number. The NCS®© code
is a descriptive code and this distinguishes it
from other systems.

consists in the controlled infringement of the
rules, which generates tension and surprise.
Colour design works with colour relationships
and contrasts. The relationships of NCS®©
colours are clearly reproducible on the basis of
their position in the colour space.
Working tools
NCS®© offers the most varied working tools,
colour samples in every form and for widely
differing requirements at the highest, carefully
controlled quality level. The correct tool for
the design professional is the NCS®© album.
Not only that it shows analogously the
structure of the colour space, one can as
it were move the removable samples
through the colour space and following the
relationship lines try out the colour
harmonies. Here the good colour harmonies
appear as if by themselves.

Colour system and colour design instrument
A colour system is a system of colour
relationships. With our colour collection you
receive a complete colour register, distributed
at equal intervals over the entire spectrum, in
which you can simultaneously read off directly
the degrees of relationship between the
colours and use it for composing harmonious
colour schemes. Colours then harmonize with
one another if they agree in hue, lightness
and saturation. In the RESOPAL® colour
system you will find the colours of the same
or similar hues in the vertical columns, the
colours of the same or similar lightness and
saturation in the horizontal rows.
Globally understandable colour language
All colours are coded with the nearest NCS®©
standard, and a large part of our collection
corresponds exactly with the NCS®© standard.
With the colour coding of the international
NCS®© Natural Color System® you can
communicate worldwide without exchanging
samples. The NCS®© code is a descriptive
code. Those who know the system can imagine
the associated colour solely by reference to
the code. With the NCS®© software you can
display our colours in RGB or in printable
CMYK mode on the computer screen and also
communicate worldwide electronically. With
our RAL and BS (British Standard) key our
colours are also compatible with national
colour registers.

The designers’ world has gone very “white”, very neutral. Without differentiation, without shades of

Expressive surfaces impart character to a product and a room

images are produced by the interaction with different light.
Delicate contrasts and vigourous structures allow distinctiveness

The architectural panel
RESOPLAN® is a solid, self-supporting, impact and fractureproof
RESOPAL® sheet with a light fast and weatherproof finished surface for
use externally. It is free of corrosion and safe against frost, hail and
rotting. It secures and maintains not only the value of the building,
but it is extremely long lived itself and keeps its value. Soap or detergents
are sufficient for cleaning the surface, graffiti can be removed

The Solid Surface plastic no longer
has the rigid hardness fit to burst
of a stone. Its grainy and crystalline
particles shine as if embedded
in wax. A prickling colorfulness
with a discreet, wax smooth feel.

smooth on the surface.
Wilsonart® Solid Surface has many
sensual dimensions. This makes it
so valuable and demanding. Seen
technically Wilsonart® Solid
Surface is a solid, fully coloured,
acrylic bonded material with mineral
filler. A material with outstanding
properties in use and in processing.
Resistant to the chemicals
customary in the household and
thus insensitive to spots, porelessly
smooth and therefore hygienic,
suitable for foods and easy to care
for. Waterproof and water-repellant
on one side and heat resistant on
the other.
As a thermoplastic Wilsonart®
Solid Surface can be formed threedimensionally
under the action of
heat. The material in the form of
sheets can be processed similarly
to wooden materials and bonded
without joints and watertight with
an acrylic adhesive of the same
material. In this way damage can
be repaired without a trace. The
surface can be polished as desired
from matt to high gloss. If highly
stressed it can thus be renewed
quite simply. This makes it extremely
long-living. The Wilsonart®
Solid Surface thermoplastic is an
ideal supplement to the duroplastic
RESOPAL®.

We have activated our malachite design 7270 digitally in colour so that you can fully exhaust
the possibilities of the LED technique with it. When the colourful, additively mixed LED light
meets the body colours of the RESOPAL® surface, it resolves the subtractively mixed body colours
into their components and dissolves them optically from the surface. One colour shines forwards,
others appear to retreat. The colours appear materially, the surface structure is dissolved.

The RESOPAL® wall protection systems are available in three substrate materials
(according to requirement now up to fire protection class A1) and four edge
materials.
A single solution for all material and design variants will satisfy all
requirements. It ensures simple and fast installation with positive fastening
over the entire wall and over the height required in each case up to 1.30 m.
All current RESOPAL® collections are available for the surface in order to match
the colour with other RESOPAL® surfaces in interior finishing, on doors or
furniture. RESOPAL® wall protection systems protect walls endangered by
impact reliably against damage.
Here they themselves are long lasting, attractive, hygienic (also with
HIPERCARE®, look page 155) and easy to care for. Simultaneously very
cost effective, because low in renovation.

Healthy Heating
with radiant heat
A biologically healthy heating
system provides warmth according
to the principle of sunshine.
Infrared radiation is transformed
into heating energy only on solid
bodies. The greatest part of the
heat is therefore not given off to
the air, but directly to the walls
or objects in the room. The heat
is radiated from one solid body to
the next without heating up the
ambient air between the bodies
and thus moving it unnecessarily.
The room surfaces receiving the
radiation absorb heat and radiate
it back into the room.
The tiled stove owes its legendary
reputation to this principle, by
ensuring a high radiant heat
temperature with a surprisingly
low air temperature at the same
time. The benefits are comfort
heat without draught. The air is
comfortably dry, cool, dust and
germfree for breathing. Damp wall
dry out, so that mould does not
have a chance to grow.

Low energy, low costs
The rapid, direct heating and
enormous storage capacity in
solid material in the case of
radiant heating make for an
energy saving of up to 20 per
cent compared with other heating
systems. As the room temperature
can be 2-4°C less you will still
have a saving on the energy use.

the room air is lost due to ventilation,
energy losses are virtually
excluded with radiant heating.

Corundum, the second hardest mineral after
diamonds, was integrated into overlays back
in the 1990s to create an abrasion-resistant

The reliable solution
RESOPAL® is surface. It finishes the substrate.
Classical substrates are wooden materials such
as chipboards (RESOPAL® Span Excellent), MDF
and HDF boards, plywood or veneer boards,

Colour fidelity
The greatest care has been applied to the faithful
rendition of the colours and decors displayed in this
book. All Plain Colours palettes have been printed
separately in 7 – colour printing. However, there can
be slight deviations in colour for printing reasons.
We therefore recommend that if a binding colour
sample is required, the final choice of décor is made
according to the ORIGINAL RESOPAL® laminate
sample.
Rights to illustration
The illustrations appear with friendly approval
of the legal owners. Where these could not be found,
claims will be compensated for if necessary within
the scope of the customary agreements.
