3. Strategic Plan 2015 – 2018 and Occupancy
In addition to laying out the Hospital’s
strategic goals and objectives, Strategic
Plan 2015 - 2018 is aimed at reducing
Sunnybrook’s inpatient occupancy levels.
On many days over the last year, demand
for care at Sunnybrook outweighed the
organization’s physical capacity and the
Hospital was left with the difficult situation
of having patients in hallways and longerthan-expected
wait times for other areas.
Patient care units across the Hospital’s
three sites spent 2014/15 putting forth
extra effort to care for patients who had
waits in the Emergency Department and
hallways, to make certain those who were
in immediate need of care were able to
access it as quickly as possible.
Strategic Plan 2015-18
To manage the high demand for inpatient
care, Strategic Plan 2015-18 began
to focus the organization’s amount of
routine and general hospital care to a
defined catchment area. These services
are fairly common and are available
closer to home for patients outside of
the organization’s catchment. At the
same time, Sunnybrook reaffirmed its
commitment to its strategic priorities,
those select highly specialized areas
in which Sunnybrook is consistently
