MISES AND LACHMANN ON HUMAN ACTIONcertain kinds of action. This is something very different from theway in which natural events are ‘determined’ by their causes.(Lachmann 1971:25–6)14 This is the argument advanced by Gadamer (1979). To put thisargument in Lachmann’s terms: any act of interpretation makes usaware of elements of both our own ‘taken for grantedness’ and that ofthe author.15 Husserl encountered severe problems in attempting to retain aCartesian subject and yet emphasise the importance of ‘the lifeworld’.If the notion of intersubjectivity is and the context of meaning isfleshed out in either Wittgensteinian or Heideggerian terms, then any‘subjectivism’ is seriously curtailed.ReferencesAlbrow, M.
