We are able to offer these guarantees becausewe experience very few issues with our products. To activate the guarantees it is important to return the Window and Doorset Guarantee Registration Form, with allinformation completed within 28 days. Please ensure that the instructions within this manual have been followed toensure that you conform with the requirements of the guarantees and get the most out of your products.PRODUCT CHECKLISTVENTILATIONThe checklist below highlights the key points that will ensure you get the most out of your new windows and doors.1. Ensure that the products have been delivered in good condition and stored correctly.2. Ensure that the building is well ventilated before installation.3. Ensure that the products are installed by an approved installation partner or follow the instructions in theWindow and Door Installation Manual.4. Familiarise yourself with the operation and maintenance of the different products.5. Complete the Window and Doorset Guarantee Registration form and return it to George Barnsdale within 28days of delivery. All products have been manufactured in a humidity controlled environment to ensure that the timber has a moisturecontent during production that equates closely to the level it will experience when installed. This prevents excessivemovement of the timber that can lead to issues with opening and coating damage.During the drying phase of new buildings or renovations where large amounts of plastering or cement basedflooring has occurred, a large amount of water vapour is set free. This can cause extremely high humidity levelswithin the building and as a result the timber will take on moisture which can lead to movement and swelling thatcauses opening issues, coating damage and promotes fungal growth. To avoid these issues and ensure that the product guarantees remain valid it is vital to adequately ventilate thebuilding by either opening the windows or using dehumidification equipment.DELIVERY & STORAGEIMPORTANT:Inadequate ventilation can cause serious damage to the product and will invalidate theguarantee.Your windows and doors will be delivered in protective packaging to ensure that they are not damaged duringtransit, offloading or in temporary storage.INSTALLATIONAll products should be checked at the time of delivery to ensure that they are in accordance with the orderschedule, that the delivery is complete and that the products and any protective packaging are not damaged. If any issues are discovered then you should notify us of the problem as quickly as possible and within 3 days ofdelivery. If your windows and doors are being installed by somebody other than a George Barnsdale approved installationpartner, please ensure that the guidelines in the Window and Door Installation Manual are followed, or use theBritish Standard BS8213-4: 2007.When offloading products from the delivery vehicle or stillages, they should be stored vertically in the correctorientation. Preferably products should not be stacked, but if this is required they should be spaced off each otherallowing for adequate ventilation between each item (the coating may be damaged if the spaces are too narrow).COATING MAINTENANCEWhen stored externally, the products should be raised off ground level in a way that prevents them being in contactwith standing water. They should also be covered in a waterproof sheet to protect them from the elements. Whenstored internally, they should be protected from dirt and damage, but adequate ventilation around the product mustbe maintained. Our products are designed to require minimal maintenance and will usually last considerably longer than the coatingsguarantee before recoating is required. We have worked with our coatings supplier Remmers to identify an optimalbalance between minimising maintenance and maximising the product life and have identified the following approach:Clean the windows and doors:This should be done at least quarterly, usually at the same time ascleaning the glass to prevent any fungal build up and inspect the productsfor any damage or coating wear.4Lasting Performance Through InnovationTimber Windows & DoorsGEORGE BARNSDALE5

However, if the intention is to allow the surface to agethrough oxidisation then no attention needs to be given.Required:After any priming.Procedure:Brush apply the Remmers sealing primer.VentsStep 5 - Finishing coatsRequired:To finish any repairs. We offer a wide range of vents with a variety of operating methods, however, all of these methods rely on either apull cord or a push bar.Procedure:For intermediate and finishing coats on soft and hardwoods, apply 2 - 3 coats of Remmers CompactVarnish PU for opaque colours or Remmers Compact Stain PU for translucent colours (colour will beprovided by George Barnsdale).Weather SealsHARDWARE MAINTENANCEAll hardware used on our products requires very little maintenance and most parts require nothing at all. In theproduct information section of this manual, there is detailed information on each window and door system and thisoutlines all hardware setup, operation and maintenance requirements. To ensure that the weather seals function correctly and to maximise their life it is important to keep them free ofany dirt or debris. We recommend that you check the seals each year and if you find any dirt or debris, remove itusing warm water with a mild detergent. For products that get opened regularly, it is recommended to check morefrequently.Replacement parts/spare partsHandlesWe recommend that all moving parts on all handles are lightly oiled at least once a year to allow the action toremain smooth and protect any uncoated surfaces. We also recommend cleaning the handles at the same time. Tilt mechanismTILT & TURN WINDOWS & DOORS (E1/DS11)The tilting mechanism, if fitted, is operated using the tilt key in the twocircular key holes in the top of each sash. The sash should be moved to aslightly open position to clear the box bead. The key should then be turnedanti clockwise in the lock to release the sash, which can then be tiltedinwards onto its restrictor stops.Tilt:Close:Left hand sideRight hand sideOperationThe handle can be set to 90 degrees to tilt and 180 degrees to open fully. To close the window the opposite process can be followed.Left hand sideRight hand sideMaintenanceLubricating balancesIMPORTANT: The window must be closed before switching to the open (turn) mode to avoid mishandling.Depending upon location, cleaning and lubrication of the balance may be desirable after a length of time, the periodof which will depend on the window location and the frequency of use. A few drops of light oil applied via the topend of the tube will always improve the operation of the balance and extend its life.Adjusting balancesTry the sashes up and down to the limit of their travel. If there is a tendency for either sash to drop when in the upposition, adjust the balance as follows:D type balances (see diagram):Thread the spiral rod upwards into the tube byrevolving anti-clockwise, left hand turn as viewed fromunderside (see Fig.1). Using the hook tool provided, pull the spiral rod downwards about 2OOmm (8ins)without rotating. Now apply adjustment turns in ananticlockwise direction (see Fig. 2). The number ofturns will depend on the sash weight.Return the spiral rod upwards without rotating andengage pin in foot attachments (see Fig. 3). Repeatadjustment for other balance, remove prop and then trysash action.Correct balancing is achieved when the sash is just heldin its highest position. If necessary make adjustmentturns in either direction on both balances to obtain thiscondition.Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 3MaintenanceLubricationAll moving parts should be lubricated, using acid freeoil or grease whenever the mechanism becomes dry, which is evident when any operation becomes moreresistant to movement than normal. To ensure thatyou get the maximum life out of your windows andhardware we recommend that all moving parts arelubricated once a year.F/K/M type balances (see diagram):Use a screwdriver in the slot in the ratchet fitting at thebottom of the balance. Adjust by turning the ratchet inan anti-clockwise direction as viewed from underside. Two clicks of the ratchet is equal to one complete turn.IMPORTANT: Do not over tension.12Lasting Performance Through InnovationTimber Windows & DoorsGEORGE BARNSDALE13

Providing these are keptproperly adjusted and the door lock bolts are kept fully engaged they will stop any movement of the door stiles. If the door is not evenly compressing the weather seals, this may cause permanent damage.OperationOpening (different locking system options)PIVOT WINDOWS (P1)OperationStandard Lock:To open a standard door, first the door should be unlocked using the key in the lockingcylinder. Once it is unlocked the door can be opened by turning the handle in adownwards direction. The sash is opened by turning the handle 90 degrees and pushing outwards. The pivot friction hinge allows thesash to be opened by the right amount and then held in position. In order to clean the window, the sash can berotated by 180 degrees, so the outside glass is now on the inside. To do this, open the sash as normal allowing thetop of the sash to lower down. Once in reach the top of the sash can then be pulled to give a full rotation. The locking system works by first engaging a latch when the door is closed. Then the handle should be lifted, whichengages the hook bolts at the top and bottom of the door, providing extra security and further support to the doorto ensure it fits squarely and flush in the frame. After engaging the hooks the door can then be locked using the keyin the cylinder.14Lasting Performance Through InnovationTimber Windows & DoorsGEORGE BARNSDALE15

Key Operated Lock: A key operated lock works in the same way as a standard system except the cylinder operates thehooks in addition to the handle. Usually there will be only a cylinder on the outside and in this caseto open the door turn the key by 2 rotations (the first unlocks the door and the second disengages+2mm- 2mmthe hook bolts and the latch). On the inside, the same process can be used or the standard process+1mm- 1mmwhere a handle is present. To lock the door the process is the same but in reverse.NOMINAL POSITIONKeep adjustmentMost keeps we supply are fully adjustable. When the hinges have been adjusted, the keeps should be adjusted.Auto Lock:To open a auto lock, the door can be unlocked with a turn of the key and then the hooks can bedisengaged with a further quarter turn of the key. If the door has not been locked, a quarter turn ofthe key will allow it to be opened. If there is a handle on the inside, the process of opening is thesame as a standard door. To lock, turn the key one rotation as the hooks are engaged automatically.Striker Plate:Should be adjusted to allow the door to latch shut but notso that it is necessary to slam it shut.Use a T15 torx to adjust the compression on the gasketby turning the eccentric cam located at the top andbottom of the adjustable striker plate.CAUTION: Thumb-Turn Euro Cylinder OperationPlease note: Care should be taken when using a thumb turn cylinder. The thumb turn cylinder is spring loaded for securitywhich is a safety feature whereby should the cylinder be attacked from the outside, it will prevent access to the lock mechanism. In order to ensure that the lock is always in the correct position to prevent an external attack, it is essential that thethumb turn cylinder is pushed in to turn and must be released back to its original out position after every operation.Hook Bolt Plates:Should be adjusted so that when the bolts are engagedit holds the stile true and against the seals. The sealswill force the stile of the door away from them and it isimportant to stop the door warping to keep the stile true.Use a T15 torx to adjust the compression on the gasket byturning the eccentric cam located at the top and bottom ofthe adjustable hook bolt plate. If the thumb turn is left in the midway position, meaning that the spring mechanism has not been released, then you willencounter a problem whereby a key cannot be inserted fully from the outside. On a lever/lever operation this means you could be locked out if a memberDECREASEof your householdINCREASEhas locked the door from theAIRGAP NOMINAL POSITION AIRGAP-4mm+4mminside and not returned the thumb turn to the correct position. On a lever/pad operation this means you could lock yourselfout of your home if you do not return the thumb turn to the correct position on opening and the door closes behind you.IMPORTANT:Do not adjust with a powertool, hand tool adjustment only. Theseadjustments also need to be made at the installation stage.MaintenanceLubrication+2mm+1mmNOMINAL POSITIONAll moving parts should be lubricated, using acid free oil or grease whenever the mechanism becomes dry, which isevident when any operation becomes more resistant to movement than normal.
