MINUTES OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE ANDDISTRICT ADVISORY GROUP MEETINGAPRIL 23, <strong>2009</strong><strong>The</strong> Executive Committee and District Advisory Group of the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association met inBoone, <strong>Iowa</strong> at the association offices at 8:30 a.m. Executive Committee members present were: Leon Kuehner,Hampton; Todd Lettow, Hampton; Mark Lehmann, Waverly; Susan Stogdill, Malvern; Brian Ney, Cresco;and Mike Teigland, Indianola. District Advisory Group Members present were: Jim Fritz, Decorah; TomGerking, Sloan; Teresa <strong>No</strong>ok, Villisca; Daryl Sherman, Lake Mills; Susan Day, Garden Grove, and RobertYoungquist, Washington. Also in attendance was Alan Greiner, IHSMA Executive Director who served as recordingsecretary. President Kuehner chaired the meeting.MMS (Ney/Lettow) to approve additions to the agenda as provided. PASSEDMMS (Teigland/Lehmann) to approve the minutes from January 22, <strong>2009</strong> as amended. PASSEDMMS (Lehmann/Ney) to approve the financial bills as submitted. PASSEDSHOW-JAZZ CHOIR/JAZZ BAND FESTIVAL: <strong>The</strong> director presented the registration report for the <strong>2009</strong>festival series. Weather permitted each of the sites to run as scheduled this year. <strong>The</strong> poor weather leading tothe festival, however, resulted in a large number of registrants that scratched. Registration numbers for ShowChoirs decreased by 12, Jazz Choirs decrease by 3 and Jazz Bands decreased by 12 ensembles. This resulted inan overall loss of 27 ensembles over last year’s festival. <strong>The</strong> number of schools participating in the festival decreasedby 9 schools.PIANO FESTIVAL: <strong>The</strong> director provided a registration report for the <strong>2009</strong> festival citing that registrationnumbers decreased by 13 events this year.SOLO/SMALL ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL: <strong>The</strong> director presented the registration report for the <strong>2009</strong> festivalseries. This year’s festival experienced a 797-entry decline.LARGE GROUP FESTIVAL: Director Greiner presented the registration report as evident, reporting a overalldecline in participation of 9 ensembles: choruses remained consistent with the previous year, orchestras experienceda 4 ensemble increase, and Concert Bands experienced a decrease of 13 bands.DISTRICT ADVISORY GROUP CONCERNS: Tom Gerking expressed concern that there needs to be moreinvestigation into equipment and facilities provided by each show choir site. He also expressed concern overjudge’s not awarding the outstanding performance at Solo/Small Ensemble Festival when those same entrieswould have been selected by another judge.Teresa <strong>No</strong>ok expressed concern that one of the host sites spread 4 centers throughout 3 different buildings. Shealso expressed delight in the work of one of the judges, Everett Johnson.ASSOCIATION CONCERNS: MMS (Stogdill/Lettow) to pay the one-time redesign fee of $2,500 to becomepart of the IHSSN Challenge Cup Program. PASSED MMS (Lehmann/Ney) to accept the <strong>2009</strong>-2010registration, penalty, and festival dates as amended. PASSED MMS (Lehmann/Stogdill) to select Gary Fiscus49
