This has continued to be a major improvement in the quality of instruments the All-Statepercussionists were exposed to.Mr. Rutt announced that the <strong>2009</strong> All-State Conductor would be Dr. Russell Mikkelson, Director of Bands at<strong>The</strong> Ohio State University.Ted Hallberg presented a written report of the 2008 All-State Orchestra citing the outstanding work of Dr. EmilyFreeman Brown and the All-State Orchestra. Mr. Hallberg expressed his appreciation for the work of his assistants:Nick Hoover, Dowling Catholic <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>, Des Moines; Ann Gribbons, Indianola; Both have agreedto continue to serve as assistants for the 2008 festival. Ann Gribbons will be serving as Orchestra Chair-electfor the <strong>2009</strong> festival.Data from the 2008 Festival:200 Members: 146 String, 54 wind/percussionNumber of years in All-State:Strings: 1 st year – 68 2 nd – 44 3 rd – 17 4 th – 17Winds/Percussion: 1 st year – 24 2 nd – 8 3 rd – 16 4 th – 6One string member had also participated in the All-State Chorus.33 students had participated in the All-State Band (this includes the 4 bassists)29 string students attended an All-State Camp11 wind/percussion students attended an All-State Camp141 string students studied privately41 wind/percussion students studied privately39 students came from a school that does not have a string program. 11 of those students were string playersOrchestra procedural changesViolins: if auditions carry past the noon hour, those students under consideration should be posted asrecalled (same as band does for flutes and clarinets).Post the first 10 students auditioning for Chair placements at All-State on the IHSMA website 2 daysprior to the festival in alphabetical order.Mr. Hallberg announced that the <strong>2009</strong> conductor of the All-State Orchestra will be Dr. Daniel Baldwin fromLuther College, Decorah, <strong>Iowa</strong>.Mary Citta presented a written report of the 2008 All-State Chorus. Mrs. Citta praised the work of the All-StateChorus and their director Mr. Rick Bjella. <strong>The</strong> music selected by him was challenging, but well worth the timeneeded to prepare.She announced that Dr. Geoffrey Boers, Director of choral Studies at the University of Washington in Seattlewould be serving as the conductor of the <strong>2009</strong> festival. She announced that the music release date would beJuly 27, <strong>2009</strong>.47
