SHOW CHOIR, JAZZ CHOIR, AND JAZZ BAND FESTIVALSShow Choir, Jazz Choir, and Jazz Band Festivals are scheduled as follows:Jazz Band Festival - Classes 3A, 1A - January 16, 2010Show Choir/Jazz Band Festival - Classes 4A, 2A – January 30, 2010Jazz Choir Festival – Classes 3A, 1A – January 30, 2010Show Choir Festival - Classes 3A, 1A– February 1, 2010Jazz Choir Festival – Classes 4A, 2A – February 1, 2010Registration for this festival will be online. Instructions for doing so can be found online. Registration fees are: ShowChoirs and Jazz Choirs - $90.00 per entry; Jazz Bands - $100.00 per entry. <strong>The</strong> Registration Deadline date for ShowChoir/Jazz Choir/Jazz Band entry is <strong>No</strong>vember 23, <strong>2009</strong>; Penalty Deadline is <strong>No</strong>vember 30, <strong>2009</strong>. A valid check orpurchase order number must be submitted online on or before <strong>No</strong>vember 23, <strong>2009</strong> for your registration process to becomplete without penalty. You know that your registration is complete when the check number or purchase ordernumber you input appears in the bottom left hand corner of your online invoice. To check this you will need to viewthe invoice after submitting your check or purchase order number. At this point also review your invoice for accuracy!<strong>The</strong>n print off a copy of the invoice and take it to your office for payment. If you have a problem contact the IHSMA officeimmediately. Final payment should be mailed to: <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association, PO Box 10, Boone, IA 50036-0010. This payment is due 30 days from your registration date.GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS1. Each performing ensemble will be judged by a panel of three judges, one of which must provide taped remarks, andthe other two have the option of commenting in the medium in which they feel the most comfortable (written or taped).Sites that can accommodate such will provide an audio feed from one judge into the performance videotape for eachschool. A fourth judge providing written comments and verbal critique will judge sight-reading for Jazz Bands.2. “Comments Only” performances are permitted for any ensemble. This must be indicated on adjudication forms whenreturned to the festival site manager.3. Show Choirs and Jazz Bands shall use the P.A. equipment provided which will consist of five microphones to be usedat the discretion of the director. Jazz Choirs are permitted to bring their own sound equipment and technician (an eligiblestudent).4. A tuned acoustical piano will be the only provided instrument in either the warm-up facility or festival center.5. Participants must stop as soon as the official timekeeper gives the signal indicating the end of the performance time.<strong>The</strong> rating of those ensembles that do not stop when the signal is given shall be withheld until the matter has been referredto the Executive Director.6. Participants may provide scores for the judges’ usage, but must supply three sets of scores, if any. Individualschools will accept the responsibility for the legality of their chosen program arrangements.7. Adjudication forms are available on the IHSMA website: www.ihsma.org. Directors are to complete the upper portionof these forms and forward them directly to your FESTIVAL SITE MANAGER by the date indicated below. Do notsend adjudication forms to the <strong>Iowa</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Music</strong> Association. January 6, 2010, will serve as the return date forthe January 16 festival; January 20, 2010, will serve as the return date for the January 30 festival and January 22,2010 for the February 1 festival. <strong>School</strong>s not meeting this deadline will be assessed a $25 penalty.8. Minimum and maximum performer numbers are interpreted to mean “at any one time.” Students can be alternatedbetween numbers; however, non-participants must remain an appropriate distance from the performing ensemble.9. Admission will be charged for this festival for all non-participants. Adults - $5, K-12 students - $2.SHOW CHOIR FESTIVAL REGULATIONS1. Show Choirs: minimum of 8 performers with an unlimited maximum number of performers. An instrumental back-upensemble appropriate to the ensemble may be employed.2. Show Choirs are required to perform a varied program employing a minimum of three selections with a maximum performancetime of 20 minutes.3. All vocal music must be performed from memory.4. <strong>The</strong> preferred method of performance is non-directed. At least one selection must be performed by the choirwithout direction. <strong>The</strong> back-up ensemble may be directed at all times.5. <strong>The</strong> instrumental back up must contain only eligible high school students. EXCEPTIONS: A school-approved adultmay be used on main keyboard instrument.6. If a school enters multiple entries, no singing personnel may be duplicated. A student may appear in one Show Choirand one Jazz Choir.7. Taped and/or reproduced accompaniments are not permitted. All accompaniments must be produced “live” and cannotbe reproduced in any manner.19
