String auditors will select the following strings for the All-State Orchestra:40 1st Violins 24 Violas 16 String Bass40 2nd Violins 24 Cellos Harp2. Band auditors will select the following instruments for the All-State Orchestra:6 Flutes/Piccolo 6 Bassoons 2 Bass T-bones6 Oboes /English Horn 6 Trumpets 8 French Horns6 Clarinets 4 Trombones 2 Tubas3. <strong>The</strong> number of strings to be selected at each center is determined by the All-State Orchestra Chair after all entrieshave been received.4. All string entries will be required to audition in the following manner:a) Play a solo of choice (need not be memorized) unaccompanied. <strong>The</strong> length of the segment you choose shouldbe approximately 1 minute in length; maximum of 1:20.b) Play the required excerpts of the All-State selections (<strong>The</strong>se works are in public domain or variances have beenallowed for this use.) String audition excerpts are available for download from the IHSMA website on July 27 orthey may be obtained by calling the IHSMA office and requesting them.c) Violins, Violas, Cellos: Play any of the major scales (memorized) up to and including 5 flats and 5 sharps in16th notes (16 th notes only) at a metronome speed of a quarter note = 88 (ascending and descending). A scaleof 3 octaves is required for violin and cello. Violas - 3 octaves are required for major scales C, Db, D, Eb, and E;major scales F, G, Ab, A, Bb and B may be performed either 2 or 3 octaves. Style of bowing is at the discretionof the performer.d) String Bass: Play any of the major scales (memorized) up to and including 5 flats and 5 sharps in 16th notes(16 th notes only) at a metronome speed of a quarter note = 76, ascending and descending. All string bassscales will be two octaves. Style of bowing is to be at the discretion of the performer.5. Harpists should prepare an audition tape and send it, postmarked by October 16, to Ted Hallberg, LeMars <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>, 921 Third Ave SW, LeMars, IA 51031. Students selected will be announced via the IHSMA website onThursday, October 22. <strong>The</strong> tape should contain the following:a) A two-minute portion of a solo or etude of their choiceb) <strong>The</strong> excerpts that are available from the IHSMA officec) Label showing the student’s name, school and phone number6. To insure instrumentation for piccolo, the following will apply: ALL 1 st Flutes in band and orchestra will be required toaudition on piccolo as well as flute on Thursday at ISU as a part of the chair placement procedure. Failure to complywith this requirement will automatically place those students at the bottom of the 1 st Flute section.7. To insure instrumentation for English Horn parts, the following will apply: All oboes have been given first and secondoboe parts for the All-State band or orchestra. All players will have the possibility to be the first chair oboe player inthe All-State Band or orchestra. First and second oboe part assignments will be designated after the chair placementauditions in Ames. To be considered for the first oboe part students must audition on English horn. <strong>The</strong> English hornchair may be rotated through the festival.8. All accepted All-State Orchestra clarinets, bassoons, trumpets and tenor trombones will receive all parts to auditionon for the festival. All players will have the chance to audition for 1 st chair. Horns, bass trombones, baritones and tubaswill still receive their assigned parts.9. All initial and recall string auditions will be open auditions (not blind). Chair placement auditions in Ames will be blindauditions.10. Audition excerpts will be posted at each audition site at 8:00 A.M. on October 24, <strong>2009</strong>.11. All accepted string bass players have the opportunity to audition to play electric bass with the All-State Chorus on“Let Everything That Hath Breath” by Jeffery Ames. You may obtain a copy of the music by contacting the IHSMA officeor from the IHSMA website at: www.ihsma.org. All interested bass players will need to submit a tape or CD of14
