Learningspecialists throughout the field, recognizing the importance ofstimulating young brains in the earlychildhood years, began to reexaminethe ideal standards for young childrento enable them to have a strongfoundation for academic success. Atthe University of North Carolina ChildDevelopment Institute, a new EarlyChildhood Environmental Rating Scale(ECERS) was developed to measure thequality of an early childhood program. The ECERS is now considered to be theinternationally recognized standard forearly preschool and early childhoodeducation. These have been adaptedby a number of states and Marylandwill incorporate these standards ina new 5-star rating system as part ofits “Preschool for All” programmingbeginning in 2014.At the initiative of Beth Tfiloh’sDirector of Education, Mrs. ZiporaSchorr, BT PreSchool, long consideredat the forefront of early childhoodeducation, will be utilizing the latestECERS standards as part of its ongoingmission to provide an educationalexperience that is stimulating andengaging for young minds. BTPreSchool Director, Mrs. LynneGoldsmith, will be working in tandemwith one of the top ECERS-trained earlychildhood specialists in the state, D.J.Schneider-Jenson, Director of EarlyChildhood Education at the Center forJewish Education. Together, they willbe applying the ECERS standards toevery Beth Tfiloh PreSchool classroomto identify program strengths as well asany areas for improvement. This self-evaluation will take placeover the course of the current schoolyear and is expected to be a rigorousprocess. “Even the better programswill typically achieve average scoressince these standards are extremelydemanding and require that students begiven the absolute optimum experienceon any given day when they areobserved,” noted Ms. Schneider-Jenson.One of the overriding goals of ECERSis to ensure that children are giving asmuch opportunity as possible for handsonlearning experiences that are moststimulating to their neural development.“ECERS is one of the best tools fordetermining what is a top qualitypreschool program, “Ms. Schneider-Jenson explained. “I applaud BethTfiloh for undertaking this significanteffort. I love this school and I love theseteachers.”Alumni NewsRebecca Gillette '06 fightsHolocaust denial at HarvardRebecca Gillette'06 is a senior atHarvard Universitywhere she is majoringin Government andserving as President ofHarvard Hillel. In September,The HarvardCrimson studentnewspaper publishedan advertisementby the CommitteeRebecca Gillette '06was the recipient ofthe 2006 Beth TfilohDahan Award.for Open Debate on the Holocaust, that challenged readers to "provide, with proof, the name of one personkilled in a gas chamber at Auschwitz."Rebecca immediately contacted thenewspaper's editor requesting that thead be pulled from future issues andthat a formal apology be printed.
