MOREBUSH TELELETTERS!Dear Bush TeleGetting a car licence is harder thesedays, so it is probably about time forbicycle riders to pass a compulsoryriding test. If they don’t want that tocome to pass, then they should takethe time to look on the net for NSWbike riding rules and put these intopractice: http://www.bicycleinfo.nsw.gov.au/downloads/bicycle_riders_handbook.pdfMy observations of adult ridersindicate riders are not mindful oftraffic conditions. For instance, iftravelling towards a roundabout, theyshould slow down and look to seeif there are cars approaching frombehind.Of possibly hundreds of bike riderswho regularly use the Pacific H’waynear the Beaumont Road (Mt Kuringgai)lights on a Sunday, how manyof them have gone to the trouble ofensuring that the shrubs blocking thebike lane are cut back? How manytimes has a rider swerved, sometimesvery widely, around the shrubs, panicking the drivers, especially whenthere is a car in each lane? I’ve triedto no avail to have the authoritiesattend to the pruning, but surely theweight of many letters would ensuresome action. Also, would the person who rideshome along Berowra Waters Rd, inthe dark, with no lights, and blackclothing, please find some otherway to fulfil your death wish withoutinconveniencing the driver who willinevitably run you down?A. DriverDear Bush TeleThe replies (TBTW 23/5/2013) to thePeter Kemp letter regarding motorists’behaviour towards cyclists are trulyamazing. The ignorance of these ‘licensed’motorists regarding the road rulesare appalling. Road rules are freelyavailable online; a quick perusalwill update the lack of knowledgeregarding motorists’ obligationstowards other road users. It is apparent that a proportion ofmotorists still think their road taxespay for the roads. The money comesfrom general revenue to which we allcontribute. A percentage of cyclistsnot only pay road tax and are licensedbut also pay extra insurance whichcovers third party liability throughcycling clubs. While admitting that some cyclistsdemonstrate bad behaviour, it doesnot excuse a motorist driving 2 tonneof steel to intimidate a cyclist. In passing, I note that the Red light/speed cameras on the Pacific Hwy inSydney generated over $2.8 million. No cyclists included in this.N Sheridan, Mount Kuring-gaiWALK BACK IN HISTORYAT MUOGAMARRADiscover local Aboriginal history with Ranger Les McLeod(pictured) during a free tour and barbecuein Muogamarra Nature Reserve, Pacific Hwy Cowan(opp Pie in the Sky).Uncle Les will help you visualise the traditional historyof the Aboriginal people in the area before settlement.Spaces are limited, so bookings are required.BOOKINGS FOR THIS FREE EVENT WHICHWILL TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY8 JUNE, 10AM-1PM ARE ONPHONE: 9847 6611.CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTSuites 20-21The Madison25-29 Hunter StHORNSBYMGAmaree garrett & associatesPh: 9485 3400Fax: 9485 3499HORNSBYTHANK YOUFOR YOURSUPPORT!Leader in Charge of 1stBerowra Scout Group,Melissa “Rikki” Knudsonsays:On behalf of the youthmembers, leaders and parents of 1stBerowra Scout Group, I would liketo extend a HUGE THANK YOU toeveryone who supported our recentannual Mothers’ Day Raffle. “Art is a very effective meansto challenge people and pointto where we are heading as asociety.”They’re items that were once headed for landfill – including bread tags, train tickets and piano parts – but now they’ve been given new life asartworks in Hornsby Shire Council’s Returned to Glory exhibition.A broken umbrella and discarded keyboard also form part of the exhibition, whichcelebrates recycling in all its forms.“The point of the exhibition is that most products can be reused,” event coordinatorKerry Euers says. “It’s fantastic to see how our very creative artists can turn theseitems, which were previously considered to have no value at all, into beautifulpieces of art.”The exhibition at Wallarobba Art and Cultural Centre is the finale of a competitionto find Hornsby Shire’s best recycling artist, with almost 60 entries in five categories. One of those is 21-year-old Hornsby Heights resident Zachariah Fenn who isentering for the second time, having taken out the Youth Category last year. Hispiece is a three-dimensional sculpture created from sheets of discarded masonite.“Recycling and using waste material is a big part of my art practice, so this is rightup my alley,” he said. “This is a great platform to raise awareness about recyclingand celebrate that in a creative way.The exhibition will run from Wednesday 5 June until Sunday 23 June. The grand opening will take place on Friday 7 June at 7pm, where prizes totallingmore than $5,000 will be awarded.Special thanks goes to major sponsors Cleanaway.Pleasant Sunday …Enjoy a Special Tribute to George BeverlyShea who passed away on 16th Aprilaged 104 years.George was the bass soloist withthe Billy Graham Crusade for over 50 years. We will be singing together many of the hymnsand songs that were sung at the Crusades at theHornsby Baptist Church Cnr Pretoria Pde & College Cres., Hornsby(Just along from Barker College) at 2.30pm on Sunday 16th June 2013followed by afternoon tea at 3.45pm. AND BEAUTYPricelessPearlsBy Ralph EstherbyHappy Birthday Your Majesty! This weekend sees us all benefitfrom the date that is set aside for usto celebrate the Queen’s Birthday.Interestingly enough her actualbirthday is the 21st April so shegets twice as many celebrations asyou or I do but I am happy for thepublic holiday just as I am sure youare! On the ‘Official’ Queen’s Birthday a listof ‘Honours’ is published and as muchas I may hope that my name will appearit is highly unlikely again this year.Honours are given when peoplemake huge contributions to society, inGovernment, Education or the Arts; forVeterinary science or contributions tothe Defence force; for work with charityor conspicuous care for those in need;for service to the community or forcommendations for gallantry, the Policeget a mention as do the Ambulanceand Emergency services. I wonderwho will be on this list this year – youperhaps? It would be interesting if they gaveout honours for everyday actions –people may be awarded with ‘The bestmaking of a queensized bed’ or ‘Thestraightest mowing of a nature strip’or ‘consistent lining up of garbagebins on a Thursday night’. You couldhave children awarded with ‘eatingtheir vegetables without grumbling’ or‘being consistently kind to their siblingsfor 72 hours’. What would be on yourlist of awards if you got to write them? The thing I like about the Queen’sBirthday Honours is that generallythey have not been sought after – therecipients have just been busy doingwhat they believed in and the ‘honour’came along all by itself. If you are justdoing good works to gain the honourthen you have really missed the wholepoint. The Bible speaks a lot about Honour –it reminds us that the Lord deserves ourhonour but that we can receive honourfor those actions that are performedin the right way. The key is that it isnot about ‘parading’ our actions foreveryone to see. There is a recurringstatement regarding charity, goodworks, spiritual disciplines and generalbenevolence – it simply says “yourFather who sees in secret will Himselfreward you openly” (Matthew 6:4)So I hope your name is on the Queen’sList this weekend but if its not, don’tdespair – the Lord sees who you areand what you really do!Do you have a comment or aquestion?ralph.estherby@gmail.com‘Breakthrough Church’, meetsat 9.30am Sundays at thePerforming Arts Centre (OldBowling Club) - EdgeworthDavid Ave Hornsby - 9477 7222DEMENTIACARERSSUPPORTGROUPIf you care for a relative, neighbouror friend with memory loss or carefor an elderly person and needsupport or information, join us!Mary Clifton, CoordinatorCounselling & Advisory Service withthe Community Support Team ofCatholic Community Services will beguest speaker informing us on “Howdifferent symptoms and behavioursrelate to different types of dementia.”Roslyn Curran of HornsbyKu-ring-gai Health Service invitesyou to Berowra CommunityHealth Centre123 Berowra Waters Rd, BerowraHts on 2.30pm Thursday 13 June2013It is a free event and afternoontea will be provided RSVP: MarieBrooks 9456 3344Next Meeting Date: Thursday11 July 2013ACUPUNCTURE &HERBAL CLINICWilliam Zhang Yu HuiAcupuncturist & HerbalistGraduated in TCM (Uni Guang Zhou)Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine (UTS)460 Pacific Hwy ASQUITHPh/fax: 9987 2938Volunteer!withVOLUNTEERINGOPPORTUNITY!JOIN A GARDENING TEAM!CALL 9983 164425yea25yearsservinving thecommunmunityvolunteering@easycaregardening.org.au10The Bush Telegraph Weekly – Thursday 6 June 2013

So it is with most sporting clubs in the country.Volunteer Mums, Grandmothers, sisters and girlfriends spend anincredible amount of their precious time each weekend doing the littlethings that make a big difference.A typical Saturday starts off as the alarm clock rings in mum’s ear toget the kids (and husband!) out of bed. A long day supporting us at thefield however does not end with leaving same. The evening meal mustbe prepared, cuts and scrapes attended to, grubby uniforms washed, boots scraped and the family regaled with stories of the day plus ofcourse the sporting heroes in the family praised for their prowess. Thisgoes on all winter and if our ladies are really lucky they get a differentsport in summer to cater to!No doubt about it, without the help of women in rugby league Clubssuch as the Berowra Wallabies would struggle to survive. So, we have decided to celebrate our wonderful women. On Sunday June 9th at 10am, a Champagne breakfast is being heldat the Berowra Tavern to say thanks Mum, Gran, Sis or girlfriend for allthe work you put in to make our club a wonderful place to enjoy thegreatest game of all.
